Any use of just atmospheric planes?

I planned on making a supersonic with three turbo ramjets and enough fuel to cruise around for a good chunk of time. Before I do I was wondering if there is any major use to a atmospheric plane? you can grab all the lower atmosphere thermo reports and crew reports.  as well as complete observational contracts and those similar to them. 

if you make it vtol yu can get all landing biome as well.

but i usually do those with rockets anyways lol

Atmospheric planes have the exact same use as rockets. They allow you to explore part of the game.

Certainly in early career they're worth it for collecting science from Kerbin's biomes.

Flying planes generates a lot of science and kash, but takes a lot of time. If you have time to spend and you want kash and science, then it's a good trade. If your allotted time for playing KSP is short, then it's not a good trade.

Partially, it depends on why you play KSP. If it's about exploring new worlds, then Kerbin is a new world ripe for exploring.

I honestly like goofing around with them. They can also be handy in career for some of the earlier on-Kerbin observational contracts and/or science.

Well, in that case, they're useful for the same reason most things in sandbox are useful: the fun of designing and/or flying them.

foamyesque has the right of it. Planes have an entirely separate learning curve from rockets. Most especially SSTO spaceplanes. If you haven't designed planes before, then boy oh boy you have a lot of learning and frustration ahead of you if you try it.

Objectively speaking, nothing has any major use in sandbox beyond what you assign it. It's as foamyesque said.

Kerbin is beautiful. Explore it. I recommend the rare science contracts pack if you're doing career. It will send you all over Kerbin exploring and you'll see how much you've been missing.
