But actually that might be probable. There have been a lot of frankenrockets made from various ICBM stages.

If we're looking for firsts here, Starship might be the first upper stage with engines meant for use at sea level?

(Of course, ignoring Shuttle, but I'm not sure we can call that an 'upper stage').

It's the payload and the thrust section.. sounds kinda weird saying it like that.

The very first rocket which put an American satellite into space, Juno 1, used an MGM-29 Sergeant as its upper stage. Actually, it used 15 MGM-29 Sergeants, with 11 on the second stage, 3 on the third stage, and 1 on the fourth stage. The MGM-29 had been launched many times on its own and was equipped to carry a payload of up to 431 kg, while Explorer 1 only massed 14 kg.
