What free video editor is the best for KSP videos?

For some values of free: Adobe Premiere/Creative Suite. Depending on how fast you can work, you can work within the trail period.  And there is that one [DATA EXPUNGED, O-5].

There probably is FOSS equivalents of it out there.

If it is very basic level stuff. I have used Virtual Dub in the past. But it is most cutting, splicing, and laying in a finished audio track.

I like Shotcut. It's free open source, easy to use, and regularly being maintained. There's also a ton you youtube tutorials for it. It might take a little bit to learn it but once you're use to it productions is simple and fast (which is why I like it).

@Pawelk198604 You can still download Windows Movie Maker. It's what I use on Windows 10. You just have to run it in compatibility mode for Windows 7 and it works fine.

If you really want to invest in video editing, but still want something free, check out Blender. It's not a dedicated video editor, but it is very powerful. There's a steep learning curve, but you can make some great stuff with the video editor, and of course things like this as well.

@Kerbart I also use ShotCut! And, like the OP, I once used Windows Movie Maker.

To the OP, ShotCut can be a bit confusing at first, but once you get into it the user interface is almost similar to Movie Maker, as well as offering about 10x more functionality. My main gripes with ShotCut are the fact that it doesn't have transition effects (that I know of) and adding onscreen text takes twice as long as it does in WMM. However, this is easily overlookable as I can finally do splitscreen, zoom, multiple audio/video sources, and much more with ShotCut. I would fully recommend it.

It's a bit hidden. Make two clips overlap each other on the timeline, and the overlap will become a transition (standard is a fade-over). Now you can click on the transition to select it, and when you select the properties you can specify what kind of transition you want.

You'll never know this function exist if someone doesn't explain it to you!
