Not surprising though, considering the downward trend in Russian space industry since ‘91. Hard to restart in space however Yes the wooden sticks are genial if you don't need to restart, its easy to over engineer things, you don't need an airbag who can be repacked by driver. On the other hand laser ignition has been tested for car engines. Might make more sense for rocket engines as you can keep it on and ignite as soon as fuel flow into chamber.
