KEA(R) Airliner Size/Speed/Range War

Recommended Posts

Mk1 and Mk2 crew compartments count as 8 passengers each, 2.5m and Mk3 crew compartments count as 24 passengers each. B9 Aerospace crew compartments are 8 for small and 24 for large. SXT Cabins are 7 for small and 15 for large. All Mk. 3 passenger cabins are the same in passenger capacity.

Now a speed war has been shoved in here!

Basically same requirements as the Kerbal Express Airlines Reboot, except without the 1st (no specific version required, but 1.2.2 with latest version of mods is recommended.)

Mods allowed are:

  • KAX
  • SXT
  • Any Mk.3 Expansion
  • B9 Aerospace
  • Airplane Plus
  • Infernal Robotics
  • UbioZur Welding LTD.
  • Neist Air - Airliner Parts

SuicidalInsanity's Mk.3 Expansion

Mk.3 Airliner

B9 Aerospace

Airplane Plus

Infernal Robotics (If it doesn't work for your version of the game, try the revival below. It should work in 1.2.2, though.)

A Work-In-Progress Revival and Rework of Infernal Robotics for newer versions

UbioZur Welding LTD. Continued

Neist Air - Airliner Parts (Love this one, mainly for the five meter passenger cabins!)

SXT is a mod which I feel is required. Big wings! Buy with Tweakscale and get even bigger wings for only $9.99! We are definitely not stealing your money!

Also, try not to make a deathtrap. I mean, if you want to, go ahead, there's a catagory for it. Stock propellers are allowed, just try not to give them infinite range. We don't exactly have an infinite flat plane to travel on, and Kerbin is only so large.

The expansion pack IS NOT to be used, due to me being stuck in 1.2.2 because of the 110+ mods I have installed and I just don't think it's necessary.

The only reason this exists is because I wanted to put the Kerbal Express Airlines Reboot Size War of January 2018 somewhere else.

In case you were wondering about the name, KEA stands for Kerbal Express Airlines, and the (R) stands for (Reboot). Basically the same thing exept large planes only.

The Judges:

This held the record for a couple months on the main thread, only beat 8 hours ago. Should be a good start to this thread.

Gawain Aeroplane Industries Presents:

The Skots VIII Squirrel

u5tjBBl.png

It's the largest aeroplane in existence. (As far as this thread is concerned)

It weighs 554 tonnes.

It can go supersonic.

It seats one thousand, four hundred and eighty-eight passengers.

It has 645 parts, which luckily, are all very standardized. It has high speed wireless internet, and a range of 3800km flying at 190m/s 500m up. Or a range of 2800km at 315m/s. Or it can afterburn supersonic.

As far as takeoff is concerned, it gets to 110m/s, then just pull up, once only the rear wheels are still on the ground, you can pull up the gear and fly away.
Landing is more complicated, since you can use the built in reverse engines and airbrakes to slow down rapidly, and also we may or may not have destroyed our own runway with the sheer weight of it. We recommend either a very strong runway, a very cheap one, or a big field.

It costs a whoppingly low considering the passenger count price tag of $393,236,000 with fuel. Without fuel it's about $350,000,000. We recommend having fuel.

That is (fueled) $264,289.65 per seat, which is incredibly low. It has good mileage too, perfect for the airline whom hates paying for petrol.

We pulled off this feat of designing a truly spectacular jet, after months of failures when we tried sensible things. This time we tried just taking the Skots VI Ratt and adding as much stuff as we possibly could. Somehow it flies, but hey, we aren't complaining. Consider yourself one-upped, @NightshineRecorralis. It took a while, but I beat your 1152.

Action groups:

1. Toggle afterburners

2. Toggle reverse thrust

It will not be holding the record for long this time xD.

Flavor text:
Neist Air presents the NA Slab 2592, the biggest production airliner to date! With seating for 2592 passengers and a range of 9700km it can transport a small city all the way around Kerbin twice without touching the ground! It can even operate from most runways as it can take off and land before reaching the spaceplane hangar at KSC, and the large number of wheels spread the weight out sufficiently not to damage the pavement on most runways. With a KPPM of 0.0048 and only 8 engines this aircraft offers astoundingly low operating costs.

Ynf7a3n.png
Craftfile: https://kerbalx.com/neistridlar/NA-Slab-2592

The numbers:
•    Price: :funds:1,476,483,000
•    Fuel capacity: 75,600 Kallons
•    Cruising speed: 215m/s
•    Cruising altitude: 6.4km
•    Takeoff speed 50m/s
•    Optimal climb speed: 170m/s
•    Range estimate: 9700km
•    KPPM: 0.0048

Notes for the pilot:
Tail strikes are possible with this aircraft. To minimize the risk we recommend that pilots start to rotate at 45m/s, however with careful piloting it is possible to take off as slow as 43m/s. Optimal climb speed is achieved at ~5degrees nose up attitude. During cruise the autopilot can be set to prograde, for effortless flying. The structural limit for this airframe is 5G, which can be exceeded during maximum rate turns at initial speeds above 170m/s at 500m altitude. At higher altitudes higher speeds can be allowed. Our engineers say this should not be an issue during normal flight conditions, and that the structural limit for passengers is also 5G, so it should never be exceed anyways.
The yaw stability of this aircraft is fairly weak, and so it is necessary to use rudder actively during slow speed flight to keep the nose pointing in to the wind. The landing gear is quite sturdy, so don’t be afraid to touch down a little hard, the nose down attitude ensures that the aircraft will stick quite well to the ground after landing, at least bellow 80m/s, which makes it quite forgiving on landing. It is however somewhat top-heavy, so sideslip and yaw rate should be kept to a minimum during touchdown.

Ok, if costs don't matter, I'll submit this.

This big ugly fella can carry 1600 passengers with 4 crew.

pMS2onU.jpg

(Better pics pending)

May or may not be a death trap. I've only flown it a handful of times. It needs all of the runway to take off, and most definitely does not go supersonic. Weighs 900 tons, and has 14 Goliath powerplants.

@CrazyJebGuy you wanted a range war going on as well right? This seems like it would be the right place for such a war. Here is what I have been working on today:

cykg0qn.png

It only has 168 passengers, but the range is 17Mm, cruising at 250m/s @ 4.2km altitude. It uses the biggest tanks from Making History as the main fuel tanks, with a total fuel capacity of 128.580 Kallons. It handles very much like a big oiltanker, but has very few bad tendencies otherwise.

Don't have making history. Just 1.2.2 and over a hundred-and-ten-to-hundred-twenty mods.

I might have to make a version using stock parts with tweak scale instead for the large tanks then.

Alright. Also, where can I find the Making History Expansion pack? I can't seem to find it, and I don't know if it needs a specific version or not, and if it does, I can't use it at all because I'm using 1.2.2. If you find any mods that add more turbofan engines, though, let me know, because I REALLY like turbofan engines.

If you have the game in the online store like me, then it should appear as a separate item on your account. I got the expansion for free, as I bought the game in 2012, when they first started charging for it, though I had to send an email to support to get it. Info on that is available here:

It does require 1.4.1 or greater, you get an error message on installation otherwise. With so many mods I totally see why you don't want to update though. I do like the near stock experience my self, with just some additional data mods, and the occasional parts mod.

Well crap. No expansion allowed then... Unless the reviewers have it. I'd prefer not, though.

Now that is impressive.

EDIT: Why is this getting more traction than my other thread?

Why thanks! :-) I only wish I could make it fly better, lol.... It takes so long to turn around and try and approach ksc again, I've only ever landed on terrain. I am pleased with the less than 80 m/s lift-off speed though, never thought it would be possible!

Are you using the rudders? If you are, don't. Roll over and use pitch instead.
