How important is the new expansion to the current modding community, is everything made with that in mind?  Did it include new features that people are frequently taking advantage of?

Basically my question is, do I need to buy the new expansion before I get back into playing?

ah okay, so I won't find those mods to be in the majority?

The one thing that sounded interesting to me was having more structured goal oriented missions, and i heard players could use a tool to create them also, so I figured there might be a lot of mods focused on creating mission campaigns of sorts

The Expansion is basically a mod unto itself.

Yep. I moved it out last week to measure RAM usage (with/without MH). KSP had no problem with what I was doing.

There is a mission builder where you can create custom missions, but it doesn’t integrate into career mode. However you can set goals for the player like get into orbit or something and share the mission with other players.

I don’t really use the mission builder myself. I bought Making History for the parts to be honest. (Yes, I know that you can get similar parts in mods but I like supporting Squad).

I don't create missions, but the Mission Builder is a great test tool. So, I build a plane to fly on Duna, for example, and I can immediately put it anywhere on Duna and see if it works. Once the craft is functional, I can copy the file over to another sandbox game.  You can place landed craft and launch pads anywhere: in orbit, on the surface, under water on any body except Kerbol and Jool itself.

Along those same lines, sometimes I may have an hour and just want to go exploring. I can plop a plane on Laythe and go flying or put one near a polar mountain range and have fun cruising around the peaks, without needed to spend ages getting there.  Obviously, that is not want you want for proper missions, but it is fantastic for testing and just messing about.
