Well there's a lot to learn and there are probably better sources for learning than me, but I'd say the simplest place to start is by cracking open my mod (or anyone's mod) and just looking through all the .cfg files. Study the syntax and keywords, try making a change to something and then saving the file, and then finally check in game to see if your changes worked. Some mods do indeed make use of .dll files, which require a more advanced understanding of programming, but my mod runs 100% on .cfg files. Simple text files that you can open with any text editor, I personally use notepad++.

My "first mod" some 20 years ago was just opening someone else's mod and making some small change for myself, I'd probably guess that's how most modders get started. So start there!
Just don't upload/share anything until your work is truly unique from those you learned from, and always give credit where its due.

Thanks for the answer! I'll go have a looksy when I feel up to it and see what I can do

@SpudNutimusWould you be so kind as to share this patch with the community? OP said here multiple times that he wouldn't mind user patches. I feel like it's what's holding this awesome mod back

@_Zee Hello, I know this is a big ask but... would you be open to letting me adopt PBC for future maintenance? I know the mod is basically done and still works fine as-is, but it hasn't been updated in years and a few things have become slightly dated; I could keep up with any necessary dusting when it comes to mod compatibility (finish off Restock+ compatibility and update some other bundled patches to more current mod versions) and deal with any future pull requests, etc., as necessary. If you don't want that then that's fine, just figured I'd ask.

@_Zee I hope you really consider SpudNutimus's offer to continue your legacy=) It is understandably hard to let go of something you've put so much time and work into, but wouldn't it be better for your project to live on instead of abandoned and forgotten? In any case thank you so much for this definitive way of playing KSP career - it's so much fun!

PBC is one of my favorite mods.
I sometimes like to employ it in ways that conflict with other mods I am wanting to utilize for a certain playthrough experience.  It typically only makes significant impact early one as you are developing your fledgling space enterprise. It would be cool if some new spirits were injected into the idea, with the death of KSP2 a new wave of KSP1 modding is underway.

I haven't actually put together a patch yet, was hoping to do that if I was given permission to adopt the mod. Since I put out that offer though my life has gotten really busy, and honestly I'm not sure I'd have the time to put into it at this point. Apologies.

No need to apologize! Real life should always takes priority,  especially when talking about volunteer work such as mods. I wish you success with whatever you're dealing with in life!

Hopefully @_Zee will eventually open this mod to community and some kind soul will continue his legacy.

Hey friends, for the record my mod has always been released under the MIT license. That means you are free to update it/change it/reupload it whenever you like, no explicit permission from me is needed. The only "condition" of an MIT license is that your re-release(your upload) include a copy of the original MIT license file I've included in my distribution (my download). That serves 2 purposes, 1) it makes sure I get original author credit wherever your re-release floats off to, and 2) it locks your redistribution into also using the MIT license, forcing your edit of my work to also be freely accessible/re-shareable by others.

That said, it is of course still appreciated when I get a heads up from anyone that is thinking about doing that. :) As for @SpudNutimus specific request, I'm open to working with someone else that wants to put in the legwork to update and add new content to PBC with the idea that I act as the curator/code reviewer. I'm totally open to that if that's what you'd like to do. If Spud or anyone else ever wants to try to make that actually happen, DM me and I'll send you my Discord info. That way I'll actually be available to chat with you regularly since I'm on my Discord everyday. I just don't like using Github and sometimes I go months without checking into the KSP forums so Discord is the way to go if you wanna reach me.

Quick question regarding the current state of the mod with the latest KSP install.  When setting CKAN to 1.12 game version, it doesn't let me install PBC because some required mods are not up to date.  Do most people just set CKAN to go back to 1.8 in order to use this mod with KSP now in 2025?

Thanks all!

yes and it works well, which is luckily true for the majority of mods :)

CKAN -> Settings -> Compatible Game Versions -> select every checkmark from 1.8 to 1.12, inclusive.

Doing that makes you lose more than a few nice features added from 1.9.x onwards. The method I mentioned is much better, most 1.8.x mods still work in 1.12.5 and every version between, and those that don't typically specify it, or at least have posts in their threads that mention the issue, and a lot of most people's essentials that haven't been updated have been adopted or have replacements.

There's honestly no reason to revert to 1.8 unless you just don't like the changes to the base game that have been made since then (which is valid, to be fair).

Ngl, I misunderstood the original question and just now, when you quoted me and I re-read the thing, I realized the question was about rolling back the KSP version instead of allowing CKAN to install 1.8+ mods

Thanks for picking up my slack @Grenartia :)

No problem!
