How is he supposed to exit the craft?? I like the design for it, but I am skeptical because of that...... If my parachute fails, how do I get him to exit and use a personal chute.

Take the helmet off, or bash it open with a crowbar.

I've used something similar to return pilots from putting long range spaceplanes into LKO.  I use a pilot to avoid problems with loss of signal, but I also use life support and a little interface spaceplane for Laythe doesn't have room for 3 years of snacks.  It rides piggy back, protected by a fairing which gets jettisoned in orbit.  The pilot boards, stages away from the spaceplane and does a deorbit burn

Matt Lowne recently did a recreation of a tiny Apollo mission; and for the getting out, I suppose you will use the same method as SWDennis's battle armour and just glitch it out. Mind you, putting kerbals in struts is probably not advisable anyway.

The heat shield could be jettisoned for Kerbal bailout, in the case of parachute failure, or if course you can trust the ability of Kerbals in command chairs to survive impacts at ridiculous speeds.

A possible improvement would be to use the breaking ground hinges to have the heat shield double as a hatch door. I'm inspired to build my own version!
