Tips for landing on Dres?

Recommended Posts

I just recently landed my first probe there, but it was overbuilt so there wasn't too much to learn from it.

Is there anything particular about landing on it with Kerbals I should know? I am currently just planning to use the same design parameters as a Mun lander.

It has just a little less gravity than the Mun, so a Mun lander will work just fine. It does take a fair amount of ∆v to get there and back.  You already know how to get there, but you may need 2900 m/s of ∆v to get back to Kerbin.

tip to land on Dres: don't do it! That planet sucks! You should land on Mun instead, it's like Dres, but better and easier to reach.

ok, more seriously...

no, there is absolutely nothing special about landing on Dres. Getting there is a bit complicated, but once you are there, any lander that works for Mun works for Dres too. In fact, Dres has less gravity than Mun.

On the other hand, rovers that work well on Mun may not work well on Dres, because the lower gravity and more bumpy terrain tend to flip them. but i doubt you are interested in rovers right now.

I think that's a bit unfair on Dres. I visited it 1 month back, and while it didn't seem too exciting, and used a LOT of dv, I visited the Dres Canyon, which I have to admit was pretty cool, especially with Parallax etc. I got there using Nuclear engines plus my Aquila Mk1 Lander which I use for all Kerbal landings. Just put on a bigger rocket and transfer stage.

I also had some fun trying to catch the Dreseroids (Asteroids near Dres). Waste of dv, but still enormous fun.
