It's out!

Yup, rings are cool. They never go out of style. Plus, all those fuselage segments make for a very big fuel reservoir, if you care to select them all. If not... you know, rings. Because we can and they look pretty.

uyZ2AVU.png

Just like before, every care was taken to minimize part count while building something truly massive. At launch it goes over 200 parts on account of it being so darn big, even though it launches (mostly) empty. But once you finish insertion you are looking at a much more manageable 135, and that's with all the extras! Included in your file, you get to orbit the main 95 parts ring, plus a 16 part science module (every experiment there is, plus the lab to analyze them and probe controls), a 12 part observation pod/light tug (can dock anything with a port and provides an alternative control spot), and two 11 part drive pods (reposition those with the cuppola pod, they can draw fuel from any of their ports). Not included in the file you get, you can see a few greenhouses for the USI mod and a KIS container, but pay them no mind, consider them dead weight that you won't have to bring up.

So how do you launch this behemoth in a realistic atmosphere? Simple, with a lot of care, and some imaginative strutting:

Note that I'm launching with a couple of non-stock additions as I said, so you will have more margin for insertion, so much so that you might be able to circularize on the upper stage (and in this case, it is a truly upper stage, as in, it's the thing most "up" in the rocket xD). I wouldn't, and instead I would empty the leftovers into the station's tanks as you reach your ~100km apoapsis form an almost-orbital trajectory with a low point still in atmosphere. The nukes might be boring (leave yourself time!), but they are very efficient. This could self deploy to anywhere, after a few refueling flights. TWR will be awful when full, but you can copy the Drive Pods as a subassembly and lift up a few more to put around the ring when you refuel it, they will draw fuel just fine and look cool as boop. Remember to also remove the extra bracing with "abort", like you see on the album, to avoid space littering.

Rune. Lots of remakes lately...

Why is almost everyone so obsessed with ring stations?

  1. they look very sci-fi.
  2. they take a good deal of planning and are a challenge to build
  3. they look a lot better than ISS style clutter stations

The Kerbin Transfer Station.

Your first destination for interplanetary travel! Full Service re-fueling!

We have liquid, oxidizer and monoprop for all your travel needs.

Visit the galley in the mezzaring and stock up on snacks!

For those of you travelling in fuel efficient electric vehicles, we produce enough electricity to power all your accessories while still charging your vehicle at the fastest rate possible!

Capacity of 216 Kerbals, ~18300 liquid fuel, 21000 oxidizer. The top ring was launched in one piece, and the launch vehicle topped 800 pieces with the ring. The over all station has, well, a lot of parts. There are Sr. ports at each cardinal point, and one that is all the way at the end of the stalk for large vehicles that need more clearance. There are 12 regular clamp o trons.

This was fun to build, but very frustrating to launch. The ring took 3 days of trial and error to get into orbit. The 2nd module that came up was the power module, which is the mk 3 cargo bay consisting of mono tanks, reaction wheels and batteries. The 3rd was the Clamp o tron docking wings, followed by the final stalk assembly to allow Sr porting ships with large clearance. The final piece was the cupola on top with the science lab and antennae.

I currently have a Viper Mk-2 Grabber docked there, the pilot is about to embark on cleaning up all the discarded stages that have come to rest near the station, as it was scary as heck to approach it on the last stage delivery.

Here's one of my recent stations, called Regula 3. It's 700 tons, has room for 58 Kerbals, and features Necrobones' SpaceY, Nertea's Stock Space Station Expansion, and ethernet's Station Science. Has all the station science labs, including two cyclotrons and enough power to run them both, so it can do all of the station science experiments (generally docked via small craft, then deorbited). Also wouldn't have been possible without KJR and MechJeb. With just a few struts and only two launches, I had the thrust limit the ascent to 15 m/s acceleration for most of the way up, for one of the most inefficient launch profiles ever.

If any of you station builders also like doing challenges, I run the Grand Orbital Space Station Challenge. Pop on over and take a look!

Only started playing recently, these are my first attempts at space stations:

I guess my rockets prove how much of a noob I still am... but I'm most proud that I got the thing up and in orbit.

I guys i´m new to Ksp, but i´ve been spending a few hours playing sandbox and this is what i´ve builted yesterday not exactly a space station it´s a moon station :) with a lab and a mining operation, also has a mining rover that can continously do mining 24/7 and a multipurpose tug to fly a ressuply deposit to a space station wich i haven´t had the time to build yet.

This is my first try at something like this, tell me what you guys think?!

Now I feel good that I'm not the only person who uses hyperedit...Also, a really great base! Keep up the good work

Well my old station that I was building started to dance with the Kraken. For no reason docking ports would explode and split my station into pieces. So I abandoned the station and built another one. 1000km orbit. No sign of the Kraken yet... (could be RSS)

@ Hellblazer: Nice editing man! I wish I could make my screenshots look that good. May the kraken spare this one.

So, my latest creation, inspired by the station seen in the promotional video for Infernal Robotics (which I don't use). Behold my spacedock:

Aight, I'll post a few more (something I wanted to do for quite some time). Big post ahead:

ISS lookalike

fv60tR2.png

Yet another ISS, as stockalike as possible. I name it freedom in my game, the original projects' name.

MIR lookalike

KdtMhga.png

I love this station, as bulky and prone to incidents as it is. The most kerbal of real space stations!

Selena

u7yiuP5.png

A simple munar station, small and practical. Ain't it cute?

After-8

Wfyr5Dj.png

My Minmus station, named after what I think the moon tastes like.

Cube

zc1tW8N.png

And finally a totally unrealistic, totally useless, hacked to orbit fantasy station, because its relaxing.

Hope you people like'em and find some inspiration. I sure do in this thread ^^
