A well made, integrated mod manager will always be better than a third-party one. But that's by no means a trivial thing to implement, and there will be no further development on KSP 1 (or 2 most likely).

The best example I'm aware of is Factorio. The entire game is designed with moddability in mind from the ground up, including the mod manager. It also enforces proper dependency management, which avoids a lot of the issues you see in mods for other games.

Indeed - with lots of emphasis on "well made"! But we're stuck with Nexus (not that I have any issues about Nexus), unless and until T2 get a genuine solution to the mess KSP is in.

If I'm not mistaken, development on ksp1 was stopped some time ago. Everything from now on is going to be a community-made mod, unless T2 wants to go back to developing a 10+ year old game (probably not).

You are correct on that front, the last update to KSP was a simple update that vanquished the launcher. If you want a mod loader, do it yourself or download the Spacelink mod.
