Providing an update on my speculated timeline due to news we learned today (confirmation of 0.2.3 and a still unknown on 0.2.2 release date).

The average time between updates is now 54 days (up from 49 in quoted post).

If 0.2.2 released in 2 weeks we would have it on May 9th, 2024.

Using the current average of all update timeframes, we could anticipate 0.2.3 on or around July 2nd, 2024.

Again, using the average above, the time between 0.2.3 and 0.3.0 would take us to a release date on or around August 25th, 2024.

0.1 to 0.2 was 9 months, 25 days. This speculative colonies release date would put time between 0.2 and 0.3 at 8 months, 6 days.

These are rough numbers and approximations only, so I am not making any sound predictions. However, I do believe this is an easy way to put progress into perspective. This timeline still has colonies beating the time it took to reach For Science by roughly a month and a half. Still acceptable, given Nate's previously mentioned hopes. However, there is very little room for additional 3 month gaps between updates and/or a 0.2.4 update if we are to believe his word. I'm skeptical that we get colonies before September 2024, but I would love to be proved wrong.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

Even if they squeezed colonies in before shutting down I don't think it would have been worth it based on several factors such as the temporary resource(?) system that would have been a placeholder before proper resources and the physics rendering issue which would have made any long-term saves impossible.

We were probably still at least 3-6 months away from 0.3.0 and even then I imagine colonies still would have had years worth of refining to fully flesh out.

That 0.2.3 was announced nearing May tells you all you need to know about how ready colonies was: October/November at the least. And that was me not long afterwards correcting for my very first estimation that went around July/August. Those early estimates (and most people) forgot to take into account what we learned was a team of juniors sinking rapidly in size. I don't agree with the refining aspect you mention though, considering how they mentioned nothing about balancing science past the first checkboxes in 0.2.1 and then the K.E.R.B didn't ever mention science balancing or bugs either.

It was just not in their plan to come back to features, at least until EA was over, or stuff got too broken.

I am not sure if it would have ever happened, but based on past dev comments I was under the impression that the science, colonies, and resource features would be integrated together.  The introduction of proper resources especially would impact the other two features, so that is more specifically what I mean by "refinement" - making sure that all the gameplay pieces play together nicely.

Even before closure Nate's final video interview implied that the 0.3 release they had planned would be filled with "band-aid" solutions and I consider the 0.2+ science features to still be quite shallow. I think that sentiment would have continued all the way up until 1.0 (because these major milestones are meant to interact with each other) which is why I think the release of colonies before closure wouldn't have made the game any better.

Let the devs know we are not dead yet!

Which devs are those? The ones who don't come to the forum and aren't employed by the KSP IP rights holder?
