Show off your flags MEGATHREAD

I saw some people asking about GIMP, and how to find things.

There's a lot of good tutorials (and a lot more less good ones) on the internet.

I don't know if this is helpfull, but this is where I started looking when drawing flags: Click.

GIMPs' own site also has a lot of information, but might be hard to find (but a good way to find out what a certain tool exactly does).

Also, I usually hand-draw my idea on paper, and in Inkscape trace the individual elements (just add a photograph of your drawing on the bottom layer, and trace in a new layer using paths/vectors). Here is a good concise tutorial, This one is also good, but just googling what you want to achieve works very well.

After exporting the Inkscape drawings, I import them in Gimp and put them together as a whole, and edit it with filters.

Together, those programs are quite powerfull. Most important to learn are working with creating and editing path, especially how to curve them (for simple pictures, try using "Trace Bitmap" in Inkscape).

I'm just an amateur hobbyist, so my apologies if this takes up precious flag-showing space.

Thanks :)

I've always had some pretty strong opinions on flag design. They should be simple and iconic. IMO the worst sins of flag design are text and maps. I mostly agree with this guy when it comes to the flags of the Earth's nation states.

Well I dont agree at all I hate very simple flags. I happen to think that the British Union flag and the American Stars and Stripes flag are both superb flags because they say something about the countries they represent. That is what a great flag should do.

Anyway my Kerbal Space Program flag represents an organisation, not a state, country or nation, so it should reflect that IMO. But I suppose you could see the flag as representing a specific Kerbal country/state or all of Kerbal-kind, depending on your view of Kerbal society and how its space program integrates with that - I mean is there only one space program on the whole of Kerbin or are there separate countries that might set up their own programs? Maybe one day Squad will give us a potted Kerbal history and an explanation of how Kerbal society is set up then we might have a better idea about what flag would suit them.

Or maybe that would be a great idea for a forum competition!!! Yes I can see it now - Squad, can we do it???!

This is my first attempt at a flag using GIMP, it's quite a step up from Microsoft paint and has me more than a little confused. :)

Nice! Paint is a kids' toy compared to GIMP. It's basically the cheapskate's Photoshop.

You can do so much with it...

(*has done crazy things with GIMP*)

I do agree that the person I linked rates the US flag too low. It is busy but is very recognizable even when hanging limply off a flag poll, which I think is important. The UK's flag looked better in its 1606-1800 incarnation that it does today, in my opinion (no disrespect to the Northern Irish).

Here is my flag

cdPz2kW.jpg

the colors are NASA-like and you can see the Kerbal-system with the eye of a Kerbal as sun

Additionaly you can see my stylized actual rocket-design.

Later i will change every color of every celestial body where fly my flag...

Edit: I have forgotten dres and pol and have made a rework of the karbolsystem now... the new one will be in my imgur gallery in the near future...

Here is my flag, behold my gimp skills!

Does anybody know what happens if you have trasparency?

The transparent area will ether show the base color it is applied to, or if it does not have any base color, the transparent area will often show as ether white or black.
