What did you do in KSP1 today?

Dat's why I always rig up a decoupler/chute combo for the last-second ditch.

Well, I've never had that happen on one of these before, or I would indeed have a secondary recovery option for them.

Oh well, time for more testing to find out what happened, and adapt the design to compensate.

I got a total of 890+ science from my first return mission to Minmus in my career mode. Now time to use those tasty science points to make something interesting.....the science lab rover. Still not 100% sure how this is going to work though....

Returned my scientists from Jool, Leaving Dillan stuck on the surface of Tylo. Also finally returned Jeb and his science crew from his 5 year mission to Eeloo. Both labs were ditched in the ocean. Currently Only one kerbal remains offplanet, a raw recruit in LKO manning a lifeboat for any future rescue mission.

This is a nightmare. Bill and Milbert are still stranded as, somewhere during the second half of my maneuver, roughly 500m/s of dV just seems to have vanished, and I've only got 300 left in the tank. I went ahead and reverted to a quicksave, but if it happens again I'm not sure what to do to get these guys back. All I really have to work with is 2113m/s at the quicksave, and an orbit inclined half way between Kerbin and Eve that goes from Eve's orbit at periapsis to just outside Moho's at apoapsis. I'm starting to think a genuine rescue mission is in order. -_-

Its not today, but more like last week :) I finally got a probe to go to Moho and reached a stable circular orbit. However I wasnt quite satysfied with the design:

<a href="http://www.imagehosting.cz/?v=screenrkr.png"><img src="http://www.imagehosting.cz/thumbs/screenrkr.png" border="0"></a>

Its a probe that is a part of my DeepSpaceSat program, which purpose was to replace my aging Intersat project. The Intersat project had 3 probes, no nuclear engines but gave me the abillity to spam science from interplanetary space, Eve SOI and Duna SOI. Only the second probe didnt reach its target - Dres (bad launch window ). The DeepSpaceSat has however not been working out much. Some probes exploded after the launch vehicle was detached, others didnt had enough deltaV to get to theyre target (near Kerbol space). So I fitted one of these things with a big fuel tank and one nuclear engine, which did the trick. But as you can suggest, its big and bulky so I opened few programs to boost efficiency of my space program.

After some experimenting I finally had my Heavy Ion Probe project ready to go to the near space of the Kerbol. But the initial mass of 1.38tons and a not ideal solar panel array left me with a about 20h "burn" (basicly running KSP in the background while doing my school projects) and yesterday I finally finished the "burn". My first Ion probe to go interplanetary is going for the Kerbol near SOI, to collect valuable data:

<a href="http://www.imagehosting.cz/?v=screensws.png"><img src="http://www.imagehosting.cz/thumbs/screensws.png" border="0"></a>

Im really happy I got a probe to go near Kerbol, while the entire mass at launch was only 55.89tons. DeepSpaceSat3 which went to Moho had a launching mass of 346.58tons .

Also, being a little (read "a lot") inspired by Xactar, I started my own Ion powered plane project. It was working well, however Thombret was on the plane at the moment his brake started and in his free time he wanted to go for a swim. Engineers were "happy" to clean the plane afterwards and Thombret was replaced from the testing by Obfel, which managed to crash the damn thing to the R/D center (I dont have a photo with that, but he survived. Low speed and the fact he was just rolling on ground saved him)...

<a href="http://www.imagehosting.cz/?v=screenpfp.png"><img src="http://www.imagehosting.cz/thumbs/screenpfp.png" border="0"></a>

Bottom line, I had lots of Ion powered fun (thanks Xactar for the motivation to use Ion engines again! :D )

I started my first base! Unusually, I decided against the Mün, opting instead for Minmus. I first launched an exploratory probe with all of my science equipment and landed on the Greater Flats, on the Northern end by the foot of the highlands. As I was landing, I released my transfer stage. Because I was so low however, it bounced back up and almost destroyed my probe. Luckily I avoided it and landed safely. I then launched my three-man ship, with no Kerbin-return capabilities. I used MechJeb to land right by the exploratory probe. MechJeb was so accurate though, I almost hit one of the 1x6 panels on the probe when I landed. Everything was fine though, and I used KAS to join together the main crew vessel, the probe, and the two pieces of that transfer stage that almost destroyed the probe.

a NICE fit in fairings of my Kvezda Module

EDIT: I'm changing my modules of the space station around berbin to welded parts, tha part count went waaaay down and no more lag. I also started to use mechjeb to set hull cameras and take nice shots and videos of launches

Flew a lander probe to Eve in the amazing Better Than Starting Manned mod. I didn't have the delta-v to circularize and the flimsy solar panel array would never survive an aerobrake, so the probe was designed to go in direct. Hit the atmosphere at over 4500m/s after ditching the transfer stage and solar panel array. Ablated 100% of the heat shield and peaked at around 10G, transmitting sweet sweet science all the way down. I called it mission success when the probe was under its chutes and floating down to the surface with two Sensor Array readings transmitted back to KSC. Then it actually landed intact and took surface readings too. Mighty chuffed!

Modified my crewman returner/deorbiter to have less monopropellant. Still more than enough to return safely from a circular orbit three times the altitude of the station to which it is intended to attach. Tested it. Works fine, so long as you don't use 4x physics warp as the parachutes open. Bill will be remembered, but unfortunately, Jeb will be unable to attend the wake, as he is still on the Momentary Escape mission out of Kerbin's SOI.

For some reason, the 4x physics warp as the parachutes opened caused something very odd to happen: the roundified RCS tanks ripped off and crashed into the sea below, while the parachutes...

Are on an escape trajectory from the sun. So poor Bill had nothing slowing that last 500m of freefall into the ocean.

Afterwards, built a better, heavily overpowered launch vehicle and docked a stack of five returner modules to Station Aleph simultaneously, so that's one per Kerbal currently there. Link here.

I uploaded the latest episode of "Rover Adventures - Around Kerbin", my personal challenge to circumnavigate Kerbin on a rover, no mods, only stock because HARDCORE.

It´s a daunting task, I know, but I think it can be done, today we reached the North Pole!

You can follow the unfolding events on youtube, this is the latest uploaded video

Decided to try a few mods and ended up flying an ion ship to Duna...was surprisingly painless with 4x time acceleration. 53,000 deltaV allows for easy cruising. Went a bit all over the place, now parked in low Duna orbit.

Tomorrow I'll match it up with my Tylo rated Kethane lander...allowing me to refuel it on the go (which won't be necessary a lot).

Solar cells can totally power ions...but probably not out near Jool. Fitted 3 reactors to get around that. I've been using solar unless I have to burn in the shade so far.

It's super slow...but careless because you never really have to worry about deltaV or fuel.

4 Kerbals came on the ride...a ride which will likely take years. Poor *******s!
