CatmanFS
X-Stream Spaceplane Worked all night at 10fps trying to get this thing worked out. 4 Whiplash 4 Rapier 2 Aerospike 4 Nukes 12 Ion engines Makes orbit with about 1000 liquid fuel left, plus 5k of Xenon. Drops the whiplashes once they're toast, also the aerospikes, they just help reach full speed and keep altitude. I know it's not strictly an SSTO, but honestly I really don't care if I have to drop off some extra hardware that becomes useless once I leave the atmosphere. Once you fire the nukes and switch over the rapiers just aim up. Once refueled it could go quite a distance with the variety of propellants available. eddiew
Went looking for a low-part answer to getting big reds into orbit. Turns out Tweakscale is all you need... ~50 parts, 650m/s left in LKO with payload. Dunno whether to feel guilty or not, but it sure does help my FPS out. This would be a horrible number of wing pieces for the same area otherwise.

Mikki
I'm totally hijacking your style. Nice!
I have the Craftfile for you! You need Kerbal Joint Reinforcement Mod, or it falls apart on initial load on the runway. If you start as it comes, keep pulling up untill you reach mach 1 (300m/s), then meet a proper ascendpath to orbit. Read the info in the SPH in the craftdescription... Throttling up all engines to full power may end up in a flameout of the Whiplashs, release the brakes at 2700kn thrust. It flies perfect with or without Payload, no need for pumping fuel around (if then, only very little to the front when the tanks deplete to the end.) I suggest when you make changes to this airframe, it won`t work properly anymore. You need a quite fast CPU to run this smoothly i think. How2FoldSoup
I'm a little bitter. Prepatch I spent hours getting my chemical SSTO to work right. I tried to incorporate the new SSME on it to see what they could do. I found they were a bit over powered...so I thought why not try to make the most ridiculous thing out of one of these engines. I present the unnamed SSTO. I built it in 5 minutes and it has 26 parts. It's in a circular 100x100 km orbit. I did the math by hand since I don't have KER on this flight and it still has about 600m/s in the tanks. Something is wrong with these engines. Edit: I just realized my KER readouts were pulled to the side.

milosh
Thanks to 1.0.5 we now have MK1 sized ISRU units so I could finally build an SSTO I was dreaming about since I've first used an ISRU: an SSTO that can refuel itself, yey :D It can reach easily an 130KM orbit, refuel at a gazstation stationed in orbit, go to a moon, extract 2300 dV from an ore field and head back to Kerbin. It has enough battery power that it can mine infinitly with max time warp so refueling only takes several RL seconds (several weeks/months ingame though). Sadly I haven't figured out how to transit from one moon to another and land on it with only 2.3k dV, which means that moon hoping always goes via Kerbin. Guerra
I must preface this post with the fact that I have literally NEVER built an ssto in all my years of playing Kerbal Space Program. For this design I followed one rule: The Rule of Cool. By looking at several pictures of Skylon and a few or Rune's sstos, and with the help of a tiny amount of tweakscale, I have brought forth my very first orbit capable aircraft. I was able to get it to orbit with approximately 1k of DV left in its tanks with no cargo on board, and have yet to test it with a payload, but oh well. I'm sure many of you on here could shoot this thing skyward with a payload and retain the same amount of DV, but I'm still working on my ascent and descent paths so bare with me. Here's a few pictures of it: [imgur]oloHa[/imgur] During re-entry I learned that radiators are a virtue, as I burned off two thirds of the nose and lost control. Thankfully, I was able to regain control and coax it to the runway and land. Any suggestions as to ascent paths or design changes would be much appreciated. blowfish
FYI, you're going to get a lot of drag from that probe core clipped into the nose (it won't be shielded). I'd recommend putting it in a cargo bay.

Thanks for the comment! Now to your craft... quite beautiful indeed! And as long as the TWR with payload is above 0.5, it should still make orbit with payload... because I am assuming that those RAPIERs and wings are tweakscaled upwards, especially the wings... As to piloting, don't expect miracles on ascent, nowadays the ascent is as complicated as "don't do anything other than pitching down slightly at 7,000m, and go as shallow as you can without burning up". On your way down, though, I can offer advice... don't let it fall too fast if you are burning up! Any plane worth its salt can cancel its vertical velocity between 40 and 30kms, where the air is thin and stuff won't explode, or intentionally stall out by doing a "Kobra" in order to bleed off speed before it hits the lower atmosphere. Check out these pics (incidentally, I just released the bird pictured in them, so you can grab it and compare with your design to learn further stuff here). In the first one, I've started putting on the serious brakes, stalling the whole wing to avoid bouncing back up. On the second, I'm falling too fast too quick, so I counter-intuitively pitch down to un-stall the wings and get a lot of lift to arrest my descent. F12 is useful, but not essential. Rune. Hope you make many more SSTOs!
Guerra
Blowfish and Rune, I greatly appreciate the tips. If only I would have taken to the forums for advice sooner, I probably would have designed a working ssto sooner. Thank you very much.
