Is anyone ever going to update the ISA Mapsat plugin for .21?

Innsewerants shows up with similar frequency to the full moon, he'll probably be back.

In the mean time, competition profits all involved. We get more, and the makers get to see how differing approaches work out.

I actually tried to track down some contact info for Innsewerants with some e-stalking. But despite the fact that he freely gives away his real name and date of birth in several places, and in one place his location, I can't find anything on him. He doesn't seem to be in the phone book, or on Facebook and the like.

I am forced to conclude Innsewerants is currently on a deep cover mission in South America, hunting down Bolivian drug lords.

ISA is unlicensed and the creator is inactive, so it cannot be updated. It'd be a good idea for someone to create a new mod to replace it.

no license would usually mean that anyone is free to do whatever they want with it?

No! A license is permission by the copyright holder to do things which, ordinarily, he has the exclusive right to. No license means he reserves these rights solely for himself. With no license, you can only do what the law considers "fair use".

Well then. However I think fixing the mod to work with a never version of the game if it needs to be fixed at all would fall under "fair use".

Regardless of what degree of sarcasm your text fails to convey, the legal matter is that ISA is All Rights Reserved, you do not have the right to do anything with his code without a document stating otherwise, and Squad will respect that because if they don't it places them in legal jeopardy.

You cannot do anything with his code beyond download it, view it, and play it. You cannot use his code but you are allowed to learn from it. You cannot distribute his code or any derivative works, you are not permitted to 'fork' ISA, though there exists a gray area on patches composed of entirely new code (your own work, maybe), but I believe Squad has said no to them.

Also ISA does work with KSP 0.20.x and 0.21.x, so even if that were the case your claim would be unfounded.

As long as you don't try to distribute your edit, I doubt anyone would care

It doesnt work very well for me. Everything loads fine, but when I put the satellite on my craft and launch, about the time that mechjeb does the gravity turn, I get unplayable frame rates. It took me forever to figure out which mod it was that did this, and sadly it was this one.

Do not use the scanner until your satellite is in orbit - even then it seems to be quite demanding on resources sometimes - try rebooting after playing for some hours or restart your browser with less open youtube pages/videos?

I leave it on 50x/100x timewarp with only the scanner active and do something else while the map is being drawn, the lag is not an issue then.

Not sure if referring to me, but I dont have the scanner on. I can literally just put the dish on my craft and halfway up it becomes unplayable. Take the dish off that same craft in the assembly without restarting and everything is hunky dory. This mod use to work awesome, then one day it said nope. I also have tons of resources, even though I dont have any pages up, it wouldnt matter anyways. My computer is freshly built and this game isnt anything to it (other than the general alpha bugs and unoptimization) Cant wait for the actual release so that everything becomes a lot more stable.

As far as I know, ISA works perfectly fine for .21 and Innsewerants is planning to keep updating it.

There are currently two versions in circulation- the (ultra-dev) 4x, and the release 3x. 3x does not work in 0.21, but 4x does as it was intended to be released for 0.21.

At this point in time Insewwerants has not given anyone permission to distribute modified versions of it. Although it probably will see a release from him in the not so distant future, he is currently having difficulties with reality taking away from his time available to work on it.

You must be patient with him. Life gets the best of him at times, and having been through similar conditions myself I can say it would be highly depressing to check in on a rare visit and see people complaining about the lack of updates when he just plain hasn't the time to make them.

He will be back, and when he does mapsat will come back with him.

Until then the only thing you can really do is fix it yourself and share your notes on how- but do not distribute modifications of his source code or binaries generated from it. At best you could probably get away with distributing code snippets you've made along with instructions on how to patch his code with them, that way people can build their own fixed copies without actually distributing his source.

I just tried the dev build 4.0 and it just causes other issues for me, mainly makes KSP crash to the desktop, once it even froze my entire computer lol. Im glad the 4.0 works for some people, since this is a really neat mod, but sadly for me it doesnt. No biggy. Everything is still in alpha, so its to be expected that things will break, Im just glad to hear that everything is ok and that the author will continue work once life isnt in the way lol.

Hmm ... I only get lag during scanning - to varying degrees - and I cant remember even one instant of KSP crashing (or any other game breaking behaviour, at least since 0.21).

Maybe it is a conflict with other mods?

Sure, that's true, but what's the point of making a mod if you're going to keep it to yourself? :P

If I have a requirement that is served by it, there's all the point I need. I've regularly made software for purely personal use when there was nothing readily available that would serve my purpose at a price I was willing and able to pay for it.

My MapSat is still working, but I have to turn it off whenever I'm not scanning. If I leave it on during the launch, it will slow down the framerate to 1 frame in like 10 seconds.

Anyway, is there any benefit from using several MapSat dishes, or I can just use one? Is the dish orientation a significant factor? Last night, before I went to bed, I let it scan Eve and now I've got a complete scan ready.
