"There is no science to be done in sandbox mode"

For those who have not seen, this (in the releases I've seen so far) pops up whenever you try to do an experiment, get a sample or otherwise science something in sandbox mode. This is concerning; there is obviously no need to progress in technology, but there's no particular reason to stop us collecting science points and data (simply to add to a never declining total), and while we're there there is absolutely no reason to throw such an immersion-breaking message at us. The least that could be done would be to give us the flavour text; finding out what the mystery goo does on the surface of Eeloo is a deserved payoff to getting there in sandbox as much as in career mode, and increases the sense that despite having all parts unlocked we are actually doing something...

Except in sandbox you can build a 3000 part nuclear-power monstrosity with mechjeb and get to eeloo with your eyes closed, while once cash is implemented in addition to science, getting there in campaign mode will feel like quite an accomplishment.

I disagree w the OP. Letting us do SCIENCE! in sandbox would let us scout out the tech tree unlocks cost and risk free.

Not necessarily.

All they have to do is disable tech tree/scipoints in sandbox while still enabling the actions to be performed.

Yeah, which takes at least some knowledge of Delta V concepts and general craft design (not that i'm excusing it). The point is that we shouldn't be told [b"]UUUUUUUUU; You're in sandbox, no finding out about the mystery goo for you!

100% agree with this. In sandbox, I'd go as far to say that you technically can't "unlock" any of the tech tree and thus view it for career, but you should still have the parts by default. It serves to let you make science oriented crafts without having to just go there and imagine the experiments you're doing.

Yeah, I totally agree. Whole tech tree is already unlocked in sandbox mode and that's enough for sandbox, but flavour texts and gathering of science points are things that should not be career mode exlusives. These two things are fun on its own even without techs to unlock.

(there is something... compelling about watching pretty numbers rise :P and flavour texts - well, I really don't need to explain why they should be also in sandbox)

I agree all the flavor text should still appear.

I'm sure this implementation was just the easiest way for them to disable the tech tree and science points in sandbox. I'm not too concerned about this being the way it will always be. I'm also not saying we shouldn't express our desire for it to be slightly different. We should do that. Just be mindful to keep a respectful tone.

I'm not talking about unlocks in sandbox, I'm talking about scouting them then cherrypicking the experiments in career.

I don't think you understand how science in career works...

Try to explain what you'd be scouting and why it would have any effect on what experiment you do and I'll try to correct where you're misunderstanding.

<slightly irrelevant and irreverent remark removed by poster>

Slightly more relevant to the topic at hand: I do believe that, even if doing science itself doesn't have any tangible benefits in Sandbox, you should still be able to view the flavor texts for the different experiments when you have the science parts attached. It would add a nice bit of flavor to those who like to roleplay even in Sandbox.

It can be discussed if the points count you get should be excluded or not' date=' but the flavor text would add a strong sense of immersion just by itself.[/quote']

I really don't see the point of excluding the science points. Yeah, they are useless in sandbox but just collecting them adds something to the general enjoyment of the game.

I also agree with the OP. Isn't the idea of a sandbox to be something that has everything, so all the science stuff should be there even if its implication on the game is 0.

Does not have having science mean that in sandbox mode there will be no science buildings at KSC? That would really suck cos I want to fly silly mod-tastic jets around/under/into that bridge and have rover time trials around the race circuit that is the new KSC we've seen in the demo vids.

No worries - it's still there.
