How do you PC users stand internet browsing?

I just got my brother's old PC, and for no reason whatsoever i have like 5-8+ ads shown per site a visit.

Seriously, how?

I mean, on mac i'd get the usual 2, but here, I've got 3 banner ads at the top, 2 (sometimes four) skyscraper ads, and sometimes even some box adds at the bottom

And yes, i've tried Adblock, none of my browsers will allow to me run it for "security issues"

I've not seen an annoying ad in years on my Windows PC. I've never used a Mac. When I see them on others' machines I'm astonished that they allow themselves to be so annoyed. I wouldn't use Chrome until it had a good Adblock, and I still have Adblock installed on Firefox even though I don't use it. IE? What's that?

I have no idea what "security issues" you're having, but as the admin on my machine I have never had a problem installing anything I wanted.

So that's how I handle it. I handle it by not having the problems you're describing.

I run a web hosting company, so out of respect for other providers in the same business I don't use adblock.

And I can honestly tell you that if you are managing your web resources correctly, the site should be paying out more than 2:1 without needing any more than basic top and bottom banner ads.

Sites that have more than that are milking it for ad revenue, or running high bandwidth services like streaming video that it is harder to earn back the bandwidth costs.

I hate myself for using it because I know the guys who run the websites need money, but I use Adblock. Company ads seem to be getting more obnoxious as the years go on, and I've had it up to here! Er... I'm holding my hand really high.

It's not a PC thing, it's a matter of a really out-dated browser and a really out-dated or lack of ad-blocking software. I use a PC sometimes and I make sure to keep it very clean and up-to-date and experience no problems with intrusive ads.

I use google chrome, and I have installed adblock, and adblock plus. I love it, it works very good! I haven't seen ads since I installed it! And don't be on of the persons that is like: uuu mac can do this and that, pc cannot, ermagherd lame pcs, pcs suck. NO

PC's can do anything a mac can. And almost vice versa.

I never used any AdBlock because I know the price of hosting a web server, I know that on YouTube some big names actually lives on the money made from ads, so I'm sorta against AdBlock. I don't mind the other using it, but I don't use it myself.

And still I don't get any annoying stupid ads. I tell Chrome to disable every popup he finds, and I only authorize some sites to show them.

I often see a little banner with an ad on this forum, but nothing annoying, and sometimes it helped me finding what I wanted ! (true story, plus with the YouTube ads I discovered the trailer of Oblivion and Gravity, so yeah)

Have you ever seen the semen tank donation ad? :P

IIRC, it's because the word "tank" is used a lot here.

No, i get the "Warning, male gamers only" ad mostly.

I also get the "Media player outdated" one,

and the "Download more hard drive space"

And the "hit the target 3 times to win an Ipad"

And sometimes, i get the "1,000,000 visitor" ad.

How do you Mac users stand the slow, outdated and closed source Safari? :P

It's really each to their own. Its human nature to hate what the other man has, be it better or worse.

Well, i use chrome on my mac.

As long as the ads are not obnoxious, I will allow them to be displayed. If everyone blocks ads, they will only get more annoying and disruptive. The free content you consume has to be paid somehow. I do take some precautions against malicious scripts and such, but that is it. I do block attempts to track me, but that is a privacy thing and not a nuisance.

It is so very tempting to block everything, but I think it is in a lot of cases morally questionable and in the long run it will only work against us. As a designer (of non-web stuff) I can relate to people trying to make an honest living.

yes, you can install linux to both trollface.gif

seriously though any computer/os/web browser, when not properly configured, will give you a horrible experience. when all the bugs are hammered out things run well. that goes for my win 7 rig, my debian craptop, my raspberry pi running risc os, the pile of networked arduinos, my baremetal os rig, my freedos rig, and the mac classic i use as a doorstop.

i personally think the op's brother needs to take better care of his rig.
