Asteroids coming soonâ„¢ to KSP!

I am also a huge fan of TVTropes, but even if KSP did incorporate asteroids, I highly doubt we'd be able to smash them into larger bodies.

If we could though, with all accompanying cataclysmic effects? Uhh I'd have fun with asteroid bombs.

A downloadable mission pack, made in partnership with NASA, is in the works that will allow players to put Kerbals on an asteroid. It will be one of the most complex and dangerous missions in an already difficult game.

Players will first have to launch a spacecraft to fly alongside the asteroid, the equivalent of parallel parking one missile next to another. Then they will have to push the giant rock into a stable orbit around the Kerbal's home planet without creating an extinction-level impact below. Finally, they'll need to safely land on it.

The asteroid mission pack is incredible, I'm not surprised Kerbal Space Program went this far. Is this going to be a scenario or will the asteroids be added to the standard game as well?

Edit: There is currently a mission by NASA to send a spacecraft to an asteroid and bring the asteroid to lunar orbit. The articles say that the Kerbal Space Program mission will be to prevent impact and bring the asteroid into orbit around Kerbin. This means you will probably need to launch many rockets and probably do some mission planning.

Rosetta has 3 NASA instraments on it and it's gona land a probe on a comet in the next year or so. Will SQUAD and NASA also put comets into KSP. Surely SQUAD, NASA and ESA would benefit from associating with each other now when the hype of each is at its peak. I'm hoping KSP will release 1.0 in the next year or so, not in three years. NASA's asteroid mission is in 2017, three years away.

This is in no way a criticism of the asteroid mission proposed as I think it sounds awesome. I would just like to see comets in KSP too and give those with the power to do so some motivation to do so. :)

1. Finally

2. Cool.

Sounds like at the very least there will be a scenario where an asteroid is on a collision course and you have to go up there and knock it off course. We can do that right now with Mods... Namely Hyperedit. Just put a hunk of space debris up there on a collision course then launch to intercept it.

What I hope for is moveable asteroids in a belt added to the base game along with the scenario.

If I were doing it... I'd have a set number (set in config file) of asteroids which spawned in random trajectories within certain limits. I'd have something like 10 different shapes and maybe 5 sizes those shapes could be scaled to. Then each time one was destroyed by whatever means a new one would spawn to maintain the number of active asteroids in the belt. Just like vessels I'd have them on rails and collisions not modeled until a player vessel came within the loading range.

Somebody call Bruce Kerman...

If I had to guess, I'd say the asteroid is a part or a series of parts that together make a rock. It'll have a huge impact tolerance and hopefully be millions of tons and at least 100 meters across.

Then this "ship" can be Hyperedited into an orbit around Sun that puts it on a collision course with kerbin, or even with KSC, in say 10 days. Or 50. or 100. Whatever. Then go.

I don't read it as the asteroid being on a collision course originally. More that if you screw up while bringing it into orbit you could set it on a collision course.

That's what makes sense as well when you look at what the NASA mission will be about.
