I mean for exploring places like laythe, eve and if/when resources get implemented if there is a resource under water you could go and mine it from your boat/ship.

Also a lot of people make warships out of stock parts and they look like the real ones.

Also if we go boat parts we wouldn't have to use so many parts so you would be able to go into the water if you use a low part ship.

Seeing as this is Kerbal Space Program, and I'm not sure of the last time boats made a huge contribution to space exploration. I highly doubt it :P

A fine gentlemen once said that any 'This isn't Kerbal X Program' counterargument won't work as long as we have plane parts, Spaceplane hangar and Runway. And boy do I agree with him. :)

Spaceplane hangar. Boats can not go to space for any practical reason, and it would simply clutter up the parts menu.

You can still make airplanes which can't leave Kerbin.

And how do you haul airplanes to Laythe, huh? By strapping them on top of a rocket. Same with boats. They'd be a pratical way to explore Eve and Laythe. Mostly Laythe.

I'm not sure of the last time boats made a huge contribution to space exploration.

Well, there's the ships that acted as communications stations, there's the recovery fleets that picked up Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo capsule, there's the SRB recovery ships that retrieved the boosters from shuttle launches.

But I agree. I'm here for the space part. I've played enough boat simulators that I don't need this to be one as well.

What's in a name? Many arguments could be made against the inclusion of boats in KSP, physics limitations, scope of the game, actual gameplay use ect. Personally I don't really care if boats were added. I'm not campaigning for or against the issue. As far as I know there hasn't been any official word from Squad and no mention of it on the WNTS. That being said there are many good arguments against the inclusion of boats, because of the name of the game however is not one of those.

This is a good idea, yes there are plenty of mods, and parts already float...

but to back this guy up, Ksp is based in some ways on real life (parts, physics etc) and there is a concept of sending submarine probes to europa (ksp laythe) so this is within the range of what might be made in future updates... but don't count on it til squad says so..

SSTO's are already capable of spaceflight, give it enough fuel and it can get to Laythe,

True, but wheeled rovers aren't. Yet they are useful.

I don't imagine boats being essential for space travel- even rovers can sort of be replaced by hopping about with rocket engines- but they would be nice. And maybe we'll have a planet even more ocean than Laythe one day. The ability to economically move through water would be essential.

Boats probably wouldn't need many parts to work, but they aren't exactly something needed urgently.

Until then, I highly recommend this mod.

You'll need to add

PART [

around the CFG content, but it seems to work for me.

personally I'd settle for some kind of buoyant, impact tolerant, pontoon thingy and some kind of dedicated water(liquid) propulsion. I'm confident I could figure the rest out.

at the moment me and MajorJim have experimented with things like this:

210898BF69D568EA3D7BA64DBA2289850E7727C8

but the fuel tanks are not very impact tolerant(in water) and rockets are not the most efficient form of aquatic propulsion...

this was Jims solution to getting fuel trucks to the island airfield.

I agree that water physics need some improvements and it would be nice to have some parts dedicated to landing and moving on or even under water. We don't need boats to move in space, but we need boats to explore planets on which we land.

Lol cheers dude, I was gunna post these pics in this thread yesterday. Thanks for doing it for me!

KSP boats are possible and a lot of fun but they are a bit, 'ropey'.

We need stock water parts, and as Squad have already said that they want the undersea to be explorable, they are coming just don't hold your breath.

Two puns in one post!!

What about inflatable, hi-impact tolerance parts? they could/would be super buoyant and be used for boats and floating platforms too. could be used for a wide range of purposes. maybe even self righting system for rovers that get turned upside down.

they're used in real world too:

I'm quite sure that Squad has denied adding boat parts. However, InfiniteDice and his team has made a mod that adds just that - boat parts, including carrier parts.

I have a hard time with this, why add a planet such as Laythe and not add any kind of boat parts? It makes more sense to have boats, especially carriers on Kerbin.

Anyways, I was browsing the forums yesterday when I found this: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/54907-Some-of-my-crafts-%28cars-sea-ships-realistic-train-war-machines-and-more%29-many-pics

KSP is about exploration. The fact it has 'space' in the title is no good reason to not have boats.

Planets have water, planets are in space. We explore those planets. Why make 75% of the planet inaccessible??

I am 100% sure water parts will come at some point.
