CalculusWarrior
So the devs just released a new blog post, which talks about their panel at SXSW a bit, and also reveals a bit more about the asteroid redirect mission. It's all well and good (interestingly, we appear to have to identify asteroids before we can visit them) until the last couple of sentences. Specifically: Another new part is the robotic grappling device, which players will use to snare the rock and redirect it into orbit around the Mun, Kerbin or other planets. This new device can also grab things other than asteroids, making it one of the most versatile parts added to the game.Naturally, all I can think about when I read that is the Canadarm:Any thoughts on what a stock robotic arm might look and act like? TerLoki
My body is ready. Maybe now I can have a robotic arm that DOESN'T explode when you stick a clamp-o-tron Jr. on the end and dock with it.
CalculusWarrior
When I first read it, I thought of how useful it would be for space station construction, etc. Then I looked up that picture and realized that 90% of its use will be flinging kerbals around! regex
Any thoughts on what a stock robotic arm might look and act like?I have a feeling it's not going to be nearly as exciting or as flexible as you think it'll be. I'm guessing something that can basically extend, attach, and not much else.
Comrade Jenkens
I have a feeling it's not going to be nearly as exciting or as flexible as you think it'll be. I'm guessing something that can basically extend, attach, and not much else. That in itself is very useful and could be a great help in assemblingg stations. ArmchairGravy
A grapple does not equal a robotic arm. I'm envisioning a fishing line with a piece of gum on it that Jeb dangles out of the hatch.

stevism
why not something that functions based on translational controls? i see no reason why it might not be as capable as people want it to be
Alex_Leonardo
I'm going to build a self assembling mech. The arms will put the legs (thruster) on the torso, and the head on the torso (command module) while this construction happens in space, I'll deorbit it and terrorize everyone. But, can arms lift arms and put them onto things? What does the folded one look like? Will there be different sizes and strengths? How about cranes?
Jodo42
A grapple does not equal a robotic arm. I'm envisioning a fishing line with a piece of gum on it that Jeb dangles out of the hatch. Agreed. I'm envisioning something more like an oversized KAS grapple.Still, a robotic arm would be sweet.

manatee321
grapple? i seemaybe stock skycranes?even if its just a grapple (possibility of arm?) it can be used for a number of things, like when transferring crew from an undocked ship, the grapple can be used to make sure the two vessels dont separate to far offORto grapple kerbals

liweih
I'm thinking of building a vehicle that walk only with those arms, well, if the devs really are talking about robotics arms.

Whackjob
I humbly suggest a grabber hand sufficiently Kerbish. Something pulled from a junk yard. I'm thinking a tennis racket "thumb" that fits in with the toilet seat functioning as the other two fingers on the other side of the "hand". SkyHook
I humbly suggest a grabber hand sufficiently Kerbish. Something pulled from a junk yard. I'm thinking a tennis racket "thumb" that fits in with the toilet seat functioning as the other two fingers on the other side of the "hand".I humbly suggest that it look nothing like that, but instead a pristine and well-painted canadarm-esque replica. Xavven
I don't know what announcement you're reading guys but I don't se the word "arm" anywhere in there.I agree - I'm speculating it might look more like a grappling hook. Whether it's an arm or a cable, though, it will still be nice for tons of things. For one, I'd use it to get my rover up steep hills and/or right them when they flip over. AlamoVampire
oh please yes! ive 2 stations that are in need of something like this! yes, i am aware of the mod that has it, but, id rather have it as a stock item, also wish we had <perhaps this new update with the asteroids if its in .24> will have a scansat like addition too. CalculusWarrior
Even if it is not a Canadarm-esque device, a Kerbal Attachment System winch-like device could be very useful...
MalfunctionM1Ke
I am happy to see, that there will be robotic parts and with it some kinds of hinges in a later Version of the game.I dont know yet how the grappling device will work out or if it will work at all with other things than just asteroids. We will see on Saturday
