Is it cheating?

Hi, I am new to KSP (and games in general :D), but I am having lots of fun!

I am currently on career mode, trying to get as much Science as I can, so to be able to acquire more stuff and er... think of good stuff to do on this marvelously free (as in fun) game...

While at this Sci-hunt process, I installed Science Library mod (before that I was using an .org file (Emacs great stuff)), which was REALLY tedious. This made Jeb's life WAY easier... So easy that something down there on the desert of my conscience became to bother haha

Does anyone (else? (I really don't know yet)) think that using Science Library can be considered cheating? If that is the case, under what circumstances?

Thanks and nice flights!

"Cheating" is hard to define in a single player game with no competitive angle whatsoever.

If it makes the game more fun, without making you feel bad about doing it, then go for it. If you feel like you're going to be robbing yourself out of a sense of eventual accomplishment without much added enjoyment here-and-now, then don't do it.

I personally enjoyed the experience of Doing Science for a while, and then installed a mod that told me when I was in a new Science Place so I could more quickly get through that part of it. Fun became drudgery so I removed the drudgery, allowing myself to do more fun.

Don't mind Regex, he's getting old in his old age :)

There's no real cheating in KSP, unless you are entering a challenge posted by another player you are free to do what you like, and in challenge threads just stick to the challenge rules and spirit of the competition and everything will be fine.

Ultimately the only person you cheat is yourself, out of the satisfaction of accomplishing something in the game unaided.

Thanks everyone for the answers. I agree that the concept of cheating indeed tends to be rather subjective, given the game is ultimately individual. But, as the reason to play is to have fun, I think that every approach mentioned by you is valid... I will start by using it, then when I am better at flying and everything else maybe challenge myself a bit more! :)

Agreed. You may not have been here long enough to remember the incessant diatribe about MechJeb. is it cheating, is it not... bla bla bla..

In the end you play the game your way. No matter what anyone else says, they are NOT you. This is why I build my plugins with a lot of choice. So you can play the game your way, not my way.

Have fun!

I'll try my best! :D

Indeed I am not here that long, but recently I read some discussion about the MechJeb subject... Well, I think people tend to defend their point of view about what they do...

It's like playing Monopoly, every group of people has their own little different ways of playing the game.

From not buying the first round to forced to buy when you land on it.

If you think it makes the game more interesting then it's not cheating, even if it seems like cheating to someone else.

Or in other words; It's in the eye of the gamer.

Cheating is when you edit your persistent.sfs to give yourself science.

I guess I cheated then. But I like having everything at my disposal and playing a sandbox where all the science parts actually do something.

After just reading the headline: No, it is not.

You might loose the opportunity to learn to do things IN A GAME by yourself which you personally think of as no fun or miss out on a part of the journey, but cheating is hurting someone else in some way: financially, emotionally, to anothers disadvantage - all this you cannot do by playing a game by yourself the way you want to ... and even while some might get actually emotionally for you doing things differently, I ask you to listen to the song Let It Go from Frozen and think about the lyrics in several different ways.

I almost made an example by pointing out a certain medical procedure performed in the male regions below - but I do not want to summon the infraction gods right now.

Nah, regex is right. It's cheating. Any addons are cheating. Also, if you don't increase drag on all parts in stock KSP by at least 300% you're cheating. Or if you dare to use manoeuvre nodes. Real players never use manoeuvre nodes. Or the patched conics paths to see where they are going. If you want to not cheat, you need to set the conics limit to 1. Clearly.

And never forget that other people's opinions of what cheating is in KSP always matter and are sacrosanct.

I feel like one of those fembots that Spock made explode with logic puzzles.

Did I mention that using logic to point-out to people that you can't cheat in KSP is cheating?

So is having colour in your avatar. Real players would rig their own radio transmitter to bounce a signal for a greyscale image off a satellite in GEO to the KSP forum servers. Anything else is also clearly cheating.

Yeah sure, but the only one you are cheating at in this game is yourself :-)

You use map mode? Cheater. F2 is the way for non-cheaters, navballs are for rookies who don't have a sextant.

I hope you aren't using star maps with that sextant. Non-cheaters would obviously do it all from memory.

ok then, since cheating seems to be all over the place, I guess the only option is to dump the exe and see what I can get. I'll send the bits' smoke signs of the results soon :D
