OCD vs. KSP

This whole thread made me wince. OCD isn't a character trait, it's a serious disorder (after all, that's what the d's for...). It's a much more complex problem than just being excessively neat. I don't want to come across as angry at anyone, but please treat these sort of issues with some sensitivity. :)

Anyway, I think the term you're looking for is "perfectionism". Thank God for editor extensions and vertical snap, trying to place my parallel boosters level with the core would be an aggravating task otherwise...

Thank you for helping others understand. :)

ITT: Nobody with obsessive compulsive disorder.

Well, now there is. I actually *have* OCD (been diagnosed and all since 2009, and on medicine). I had to go to a treatment center for three months (so no KSP from mid May to late August 2013 :P), it was that bad at the time. I'm much better now; while I do have some of the stereotypical "it has to be perfect," there's much more, such as contamination fears. And that doesn't always mean washing hands and germs.

Oh, and that treatment center was a residential center, so I lived there during the 3 month span. I was away from home, with visits from family towards the end of the stay, July onwards.

Sure, for hitting a huge, nearby target like Mun. But following the maneuver node perfectly while trying to intercept an asteroid, or Eeloo from Kerbin's SOI, makes all the difference in the world.

Yep, it depends on the target. If my intent is just to burn along the prograde vector, I might use the maneuver only for timing, and not bother with the actual maneuver marker.

I can't put the smallest SLS tank on top of the largest one, because of this:

Why don't you line up!?

I hate that too. But there's an easy fix. Hold down shift and rotate the smaller tank 5-degrees with Q/E. Suddenly they line up. If they fix the textures later, you'll be back in the same situation again of course. :)

To those concentrating on whether the thread should be about OCD or just perfectionism or neatness or anything, just let it go.

(Just to clarify, yeah, I have OCD, been to cognitive behavior therapy, taken medication etc.)

I wanted to start a less serious thread about those tiny things we do in KSP and those big things we do for hours and hours just to get something right even though it might not make any sense or difference.

Perhaps a better title would be OCPD (Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder) vs. KSP? It's not exactly perfect, but it's closer than OCD.

I actually have OCD but it has a minimal effect on my in-game design decisions.

Lets see I've been dealing with OCD for...7 years....so 2007, I'm glad that I haven't been as extreme, but I feel your pain...every damn day.

(note: "Captain OCD" was a college nickname)

I actually have OCD but it has a minimal effect on my in-game design decisions.

Same, but I think it effects how I play at times.

when i send a probe, i must check EVERYTHING. i have a check list:

will the probe work with a nuclear reactor failure?

can the probe survive a colision with a space station, a space shuttle, and a refueling probe?

Is there any radiator?

on each probe there must be 3 docking ports: 0.65m, 1.25m, and 2.5m.

what's the Delta-V of the probe?

2.5m!?!?!?!? Augh how BIG are your probes?!?!

Struts and fuel lines are the bane of perfectionism in KSP. If only the second point could be made to snap...

If you're using (anything but 3x) symmetry, you can place the first part of the strut and then rotate the ship around and place the 2nd part of the strut right where the opposite side's strut started. Both (or all 4, or all 6, 8, etc) struts will try to go directly through the center of the ship to connect to that point on the exact opposite side, and happily stop at the first solid part they find.

Squad are less than thorough when it comes to fine detail.

For some reason that small tank was placed the wrong way up In the VAB..

MJ

Not so, it's actually a worse problem. The small tanks are fine, as evidenced by the wonderful fact that they line up when stacked with each other. But the big tank is messed up, as when you put an upside-down one atop a right-side-up one, they don't match. I hope someday SQUAD rectifies this and puts the stripes at the 45 degree positions where they should be.

Isnt there a modder upon a cosy chair - Late at night I toss and turn and dream of what I need!

That's a good tip, though it only works for radial, horizontal struts.

I'm not very OCD but watching other people play on YouTube it drives me NUTS when they don't keep right on their maneuver node marker during burns. Watching it slowly wander away makes me want to scream at them through the Internet and back in time.

I always try to move the camera because Youtubers NEVER get it right!!

So far as struts and alignment of stuff goes, even if I'm just messing around I still care but not as much as when it's something I'll show to other people. Then I try and get it perfect because I want everything to look professional and not thrown together.

For me it is similar but as for the reactor, my question is "Will it survive an anti-matter containment failure?".

I am a person with very strong OCD... personality traits...

KSP is so addictive and in so many ways launches my OCD traits through the roof. My latest problem is that I installed the kethane mod. Now I need to map every single bit of land on every celestial body.

Anyone else here with similar obsessions?

In the case of Kethane, I used to. But I detest scanning for Kethane because it just takes so long. Also, after numerous games, I finally realized I never use any Kethane more than 30^ off the equator anyway. So these days I still scan every planet but only their tropics, which GREATLY reduces the time required.

My primary compulsion, however, is in never wasting transfer windows. And why send just 1 ship when you can send a dozen? So almost immediately all my games become huge juggling acts. But OTOH, there's never a dull moment :).

I've done that. With so many balls in the air at once, it can become a logistical nightmare, so I started running only 2 or 3 interplanetary missions at most, after doing a monster juggling session of more than a dozen ships at a time...
