Off topic, but I was wondering if the old Soviet blue and white style Soyuz parts have been deleted. I've been scared to update my version of Tantares because I don't want to lose them, do they still exist in the latest version? If I checked for myself I'm just worried that I won't be able to access any of the craft files I've made with them (uninstalling a mod can sometimes do that, even if you reinstall it, because ksp is weird sometimes).

Afraid not, it did not really immediately fit in with the new blankety look. Maybe it will re-appear in future or something.

Aerodynamics being sucky?

Nightmare combination of:

  • Bad Aero
  • Bad COM issues (easily fixable though tbh)
  • Bad RCS controls (I'm going to fake the RCS entirely and it's going to be cardinal under the hood, just fake FX flares that look accurate).

Worst case scenario, I can stick a pair of parachutes in it.

Hello Beale,

I have a few questions and a big compliment for your work on the MARS project.

What is the diameter of the lander?
Does the exhaust jet of the engines run parallel to the vertical axis or are they mounted at a slight angle?
Why does the RCS have to be faked?
Are the attached fins steered or fixed?

I would be pleased to learn more “technical” details about the project.

Thank you

@Beale Like mentioned, your aero issues might be due to missing textures. I know you like to leave endcaps unextured while the parts are wip, so if that's the case just throw on a placeholder texture and it should fox your issues.

Hey! Good to hear from you once more.

  • 2.25m (about so), the nodes on it are 0.625m.
  • Parallel as far as I know.
  • The module controlling it in KSP does not know what to do with the 45 degree jets for pitch, so we have a fake effect at 45 degree, but  under the hood it's really 90 degree.
  • They will be steered but I didn't make them yet :)

Here are some great documents for this project:

I THINK you could kind of kitbash a full mission at this point, but there's obviously still many small parts missing.

Thank you for the information Beale. Looks like a really good job. I hope you find a solution for safe control on landing.

I do have one comment to make though: The concept proposed for the ascent module with engines in both the first and second stage may look good but seems nonsensical given the compact design required.
In contrast to the drawings, I would design it with a central engine in the second stage and the “first stage” only as a jettisonable tank module.

Good Luck!

Hi Beale,

based on the drawings of Nick Stevens I tried to create a model for the Mars Return Module. It soon became clear that the 2D drawings were not compatible with a 3D representation.

Trying to stick to the drawing as much as possible and to fit two kerbals into an object that has to fit into a cyinder with a maximum diameter of 2.1m led to the following design:

MRM-001,medium.1728822986.pngMRM-X-002,medium.1728822984.png

MRM-Z-003,medium.1728822983.pngMRM-Y-lower-004,medium.1728822982.png

MRM-005,medium.1728822981.png

A circular ascent module is therefore probably history, sorry ;)

Note that the dark rings represent the outer skin of the lander.

If you are interested in the basic model (.obj), please get in touch. I will be happy to make the model available to you.

Not just that, but also having taken a better look at some of the documentation posted here both stages of the ascent vehicle have 4 engines, not just the first stage.

Hi, that's nice work but I don't think Beale's intention is to make something sensical but rather reproduce what has been designed already. Don't throw away this work though, maybe it'll be nice one day for an eventual mod that aims to complement Tantares with fitting fictional additions... ;)

Don't worry Luneo Lucy,

if I find the time, the rough draft will become something for my LEM Mod (Lander and Exploration Modules) or it will end up in my NBS Mod (Never Build Ships).

Ah for sure, I understood the correct shape from the drawings, I just felt the circular was cooler tbh, but it is certainly unique. I would like to see you finish this.

Oh damn, you're right. That might be fixable. Their thrust will need nerfing, as it already has an insane TWR on Duna / Mars.

How close? I know how fast i run, but i don't now the rate that it gets closer....

Well, if you run relatively slowly then it might have a chance.
(Although, it just need to finish the boosters and get them ingame, and it'll be ready (other than the fairings))

Works as advertised™

Haven't made fins yet, but might be best if you use tweakscale or something to make smaller fins:

Spoiler

I think a patient pilot could actually land it propulsively, with careful resource usage, it does control reasonably well (I have Mandatory RCS installed too).

However, parachute assisted is the less hair-losing way to do it.
