[OLD]Tundra Exploration

Ooh, I just might actually. Yours looks cool but mine was going to be very close in style to the one from the old Asteroid Cities mod, whereas yours is much closer to real Philae. More variety is always nice, yeah?

Cool! I look forward to seeing what it looks like!

On another note regarding today's stream, it's been rescheduled for 3pm CST. I've been having technical problems.

EDIT: Live at http://www.twitch.tv/tygoo7

EDIT2: OBS is having issues for me so streams over...

The texture doesn't seem to match the mesh of the spikes. Perhaps you should make it more obvious where they connect to the body of the probe. Right now it looks disjointed. My suggestion would be to either draw a rim around the base of the spikes on the texture, or model a small plate that is at the base of each pair of spikes.

The spikes do look a bit out of place, I gotta admit. I'll probably model a base or something for them to look like they are actually part of the probe.

EDIT: How does this look?

I don't know how you laid out the UV map for the probe, but seeing as you've distributed the spikes more or less evenly - I think what you need it some fake AO on the bottom left + top right of each panel. That's really what makes them look out of place at the moment IMO. The bases are a step in the right direction.

Also, out of curiosity, how do all the spikes affect your poly count? What about with the bases?

I'll try a bit with some fake AO. My first tests with fake AO didn't go so well since the faces are only laid out as 3 faces in the UV map (not including top or bottom).

Well if my math is correct, 6824. No idea how much the bases added because I didn't keep the original spikes.

EDIT: How about now?

Honestly that's enough of an improvement that I think it will look fine in game!

Sounds great. Well, that probe is done and in game. Now to move on to the next probe...

Oh yeah I got that. I was curious if it was intended to have a unique functionality like the hedgehog or if you just wanted to make New Horizons. :3

So far, just wanted to make New Horizons. I do have an idea on how to make it unique though.

Oh god, the quotes! BB codes will be converted automatically they said...

Well anyways, here's some progress on New Horizons.

Excellent! Looks good.

Are you going to add compatibility with Diminishing RTGs?

What separates the Rosetta probe core from the normal QBE? Is it bigger? Will Rosetta be attachable?
 The RCS blocks look good.

New Horizons looks ok but the mesh seems a bit basic and I would take another look at the Asteroid Day probe core for texturing. I don't have it in front of me but the NH probe core is missing something.

The rosetta probe core is bigger. Not sure what you mean by attachable, if you mean philae then yes.

Ah, I completely forgot about asteroid day! I agree something is missing with the core. I will do another pass on NH's texture so it doesn't look so bland.

Yes I meant Philae. I was almost asleep so it's a miracle that my post was as coherent as it was.

New Horizons is tough seeing as it is an extremely simple looking probe. Most of the detail comes from the scientific instruments. I found a good image and circled some details that could be added to make it more interesting.

what be even better would be interstellar mesh switch compatability, so you can choose if there is scientific instruments, or not.

edit: also, why the name? tundra exploration?
