  1. 1. Hw many times do you accidentally destroy the buildings at the Space Center

    • I turn destructible buildings off :P
    • Every... damn... time
    • Occasionally. My engineering is goof
    • Sometimes - only when Jeb is flying
    • Never - I'm just that good
    • Other - Post please

Nearly every un-controllable vehicle I launch somehow hits the VAB or SPH.... and destroys them. There was that one time it destroyed the R&D facility instead... but that's another story. So it got me thinking - How many other people have this problem :P vote in the poll, post below or do both and tell us of your fate with the destructible buildings.

Until such time as the runway/launchpad durability is fixed*, I only have destructible buildings on for my sandbox, where it is amusing instead of annoying.

*I suppose it might be realistic to have launchpads be destroyed by rockets which make the Saturn V look like a lightweight, but it's not fun. I dislike limits on how big I can build stuff.

Altho im playing 24.2 - never. Im using throtable engines, and my SRB`s are set up so they decouple and fly clear of the craft, straight up or due east. I have NEVER hit any of the ksc buildings, since 0.22 while i was playing with Rods from Gods.

Only one accident to report, while launching a heavyweight in RSS (>2600 tons at launch), clamps were simply not enough to avoid the pad to be burned down, while instead the craft slowly took off without a scratch.

Those are one of those moments when it needs to be turned off

I feel honoured that so many mods are replying to my thread without telling me its locked xD

Thanks mods and all others for posting and voting :)

Well... i havent crashed or destroyed any building while flying. The only thing i destroyed was the launchpad, when i ignited an SLS rocket with 2 3.75 LFO Boosters... it just blew up at 50% throttle... just like diomedeas launch attempt. Not fair!!! However, the rocket ascended as desired and delivered everything into orbit. And i bet, we can upgrade the launchpad to a more tough version soon.

I never crash anything into the buildings unless its intentional. I give a touch of eastwards tilt right as I clear the launch clamps so any droped stages or failed launches land in a safe area. It would take a rapid disassembly sending a lit engine spiraling off to hit anything but the launchpad.

On the other hand I did turn off building damage as well when I got tired of my heavy launches roasting the launch pad. I wouldnt mind if it blew up cause I performed an unplaned droptest of the rocket but I draw the line when the rocket exhaust cooks the pad till it explodes.

I put "never" since I've yet to do it in a career save. Once I destroyed the launchpad in a sandbox one I goof around in, because I had thrown together a irresponsibly-large-and-shoddily-built lifter, and it instantly dropped those couple feet and destroyed the pad. Other than that, every building I've destroyed has been on purpose.

I assemble all of my big stuff in orbit (yeah extraplanetary launchpad!), so, like many, nothing I launch is big enough to destroy the KSC, appart from the metal supply itself. But given the launcher is extremely reliable, launched to the east and the payload is very small, the chance of it falling on something important are almost-null.

That may change once I experiment with booster-launched shuttles... And/or add neverunload, for the lulz.

I had an SLS style fuel hauler, more or less a block III config with srbs, blow the pad when physics kicked in. I had launch clamps, tho they were FASA not stock.

I reverted to the VAB and turned off destructible buildings. No excuse for that in my eyes.

Craft was a mere 165t.

Testing a small VTOL in career mode, I decided to test lifting off on my Vertical engine and then switching to my Horizontal engine. A few things went wrong. The first is that I misjudged the spool up and spool down times of my jet engines and I cut my vertical engine far too early - this is the immediate cause of the crash. The second is that I accidentally had control surfaces on my nose functioning on yaw and roll rather than just pitch, so any tiny correction would often put my nose down. This is the cause of crashing at such gloriously high speed from such a low altitude with what I later learned is twice as much jet fuel as it takes that particular plane to circumnavigate Kerbin.... I hadn't realized until that moment that the runway could blow up, but it was spectacular.

I don't think that's the exhaust, i launched bigger stuff without a scratch (e.g. 8 of the 5m things+16 thor booster without any clamps). Do you maybe release clamps simultaneously with starting engines? Because these kw-engines need some seconds to reach their full thrust. If you use clamps and don't let the thrust build up, a rocket will fall down before lifting of, often destroying the pad.

Sometimes I hit some of the crap around the launch pad, or destroy the pad itself. Whenever I "crash" I typically revert and being I play sandbox it doesn't matter to me much... My program is completely incompetent so they give themselves access to everything (Sandbox).

However, sometimes The Director has other plans...
