Noname117's NAF Series Jets

4th Gen Update!

The NAF series has received a massive update to the 1.0.4 version! 16 new aircraft and aircraft versions have been released! All finished aircraft deemed possible for modernization were modernized to a completely new standard in part count, cost, and aerodynamics. This new batch of aircraft is being called the 4th generation of NAF fighters!

I built the first NAF series aircraft in early 2014, actually started calling my fighters NAFs (an acronym for: Nonamian aircraft-fighter. As such, a NAFA [fighter attacker] has a ground attack role while a NAFB [fighter bomber] has an additional bomber role) in late May, after the NAFA-6 had been built. Since then, I have continued to build fighters of the NAF series; trying to make them aesthetically-pleasing and capable jets, though some of the prototypes have not worked as well as they're supposed to. Below will be a list of all NAF series aircraft, with newer aircraft at the top and older aircraft towards the bottom.

Notes:

Not all aircraft are complete or made it out of prototype stage. Some of these will just have entries without download, while I may post the downloads for a couple of these.

I will not be posting weaponized versions of these aircraft. Add your own weapons, they are designed to carry some

I also highly recommend turning SAS on with all of my aircraft.

Not all jets will be modernized to the current version.

Ejection seats have not been tested at high altitudes and speeds. Use at your own risk.

*IMPORTANT!* Action Groups!

With the 4th gen update (v1.0.4 and later), all new NAFAs are receiving a standard action group setup.

Some aircraft will not use all the action groups below.

1: (VTOLs) toggles forward engine

2: (VTOLs) toggles horizontal engine

3: toggles flaps

8: ejects canopy

9: ejects pilot and (if still attached) canopy.

If you need to eject, pressing 8 and then 9 is safer than just pressing 9. Only press 9 without pushing 8 first if you need to eject really quickly.

The XNAFA-33 is a prototype forward swept wing aircraft. Development suspended because of severe glitches with the control surfaces (which I'm hearing might be features to the game. If that is true, then I have lost all faith in SQUAD, as airplanes shouldn't roll in the opposite direction that they're supposed to).

The NAFA-24 vulture was built to see how much I could make an aircraft impervious to the AA missiles in the BD Armory mod. From the front it can only take a couple of hits, but from the rear it can withstand several missile impacts in a row. during one test, 6 AMRAAMs were not enough to bring down the aircraft. It is designed for the attack role, and may be subject to future upgrades, including the possibility of an armored cockpit. This does contain more parts than most of my aircraft, so beware those who download it.

The NAFA-19 was built as a general purpose fighter aircraft, but wasn’t initially finished due to concerns that it would be too heavy. The program was revived with version 1.0.4, with the old prototype heavily upgraded. It has proven to be relatively quick, and would likely make a good interceptor.

NAFA-18-E1

The NAFA-18 Caracal was built as a response to my friend Jon's Phoenix VTOL jet, mainly because I had not yet developed a successful VTOL fighter yet, other than a couple of smaller craft designed to test out a couple of stock aircraft carriers. The NAFA-18, although being a bit slow in level flight, proved to fly pretty much perfectly in VTOL mode and decently in horizontal flight, and ultimately is one of my best aesthetic builds too. The craft has been tested with a small amount of light weapons, though I kind of doubt it could carry anything heavy. Overall it is a very nice aircraft to fly, and is being developed into different versions.

The NAFA-18 was upgraded again for the 1.0.4 update, gaining turbojet engines, improved aerodynamics, and a custom cockpit with an ejection seat. VTOL performance has improved, but fuel consumption has also increased. RCS was retained.

Current Variants:

NAFA-18-A2: Basic variant, no special features

NAFA-18-B3: Features an afterburner and an ejection seat

NAFA-18-C1: Given RCS tanks for more precise landing capability, probably not needed, currently unavailable for download

NAFA-18-D: (1.0.4) Uses single turbojet for takeoff. Cannot hover; requires double engine takeoff. (I'll only post this one if it gets requested)

NAFA-18-E1: 1.0.4 updated aircraft

Action groups:

1=Vertical engine

2=Horizontal engine

3=Afterburner on some models

0=Eject! (Old variants)

8=Canopy ejection (-D/-E)

9=Full Ejection (-D/-E), parachutes (old)

Flight Instructions (New): Press space to start up the engines, and then use action groups to shut down whichever engine you don’t want on.

Flight instructions (old): Upon loading the aircraft into your game, immediately power down the engines to zero thrust before pressing space. Turn off the engines you wish to turn off using action groups (For example, if you want to vertically take off in a B3, press 2 and 3) after pressing space, and then power up. For vertical landings, I have found that roughly 2/3 thrust causes an A2 to descend at a good rate, though you would want more thrust than that in a B3. Also, if you plan on messing with the fuel levels (which I recommend doing, the B3 has a lot of oxidizer for its afterburner weighing the craft down), remove equal levels of fuel from both of the fuel tanks, never leave one with more fuel than the other.

NAFA-17-G4

The NAFA-17 was developed due to the need of a highly maneuverable fighter aircraft ever since the NAFA-7 and NAFA-4 were rendered obsolete. Unlike the NAFA-11, NAFA-13 and XNAFA-15, all designed to fulfill the gap left by the NAFA-4 and NAFA-7, the NAFA-17 was actually pretty maneuverable, though a bit less stable. As its wings are mounted low, I would not recommend putting too heavy of weapons on it, but it is still a good aircraft to fly.

The NAFA-17 has more recently received an update, making it on-par with modern NAFA-4 and NAFA-5 designs. The updated versions feature a custom cockpit with an ejection east, canards, greater maneuverability, and afterburners. The NAFA-17-C3 retains the designs low-mounted wing, while the NAFA-17-D1 features a higher-mounted wing to give it the ability to carry larger payloads at a small cost to maneuverability. Because of the 1.0 update, the NAFA-17 had to undergo a minor upgrade. The -E2 and -F1 models are the result of the upgrade, with the -E2 having the lower wings and the -F1 having the higher wings.

The NAFA-17 was again modified for the 1.0.4 update, getting a massive overhaul in aerodynamics.

3: Airbrakes

8: Canopy Ejection

9: Full ejection

NAFA-7-D6

The NAFA-7 was originally built in August as a compliment to the NAFA-4, NAFA-5, and NAFA-6. It proved to be highly maneuverable but stable while still capable of reaching good speeds, along with being able to carry a heavy weapons load. It quickly became the staple fighter of my fleet, but then .25 came along, and the NAFA-7 was obsolete. It took until recently for me to update it to the current version, but it doesn't look quite as nice or maneuver quite as well.

The NAFA-7 was again updated for 1.0.4, gaining some performance back and featuring a cockpit with an ejection seat. Somewhere along the way the –C designation was lost, with the new version becoming the –D6.

The NAFA-5 Banshee was built as a strike fighter to serve alongside the NAFA-4 and NAFA-6 loosely based off of the real life F-4 phantom. The .25 update broke the original aircraft, and it was not until recently that an updated version was built.

The NAFA-5-C1 Wailing Banshee marked a new beginning for the aircraft. It updated the craft to a 2-seater design, also adding in ejection seats and afterburners. The NAFA-5-C2 updated the design to give it more maneuverability. After the 1.0.2 update the NAFA-5 needed to be updated badly. The NAFA-5-D and -E were built for this purpose, and are now being offered for download. The only real difference between the two is the horizontal stabilizers; the -E has larger stabilizers.

Of course, 1.0.3 broke the aerodynamics of the earlier aircraft, slowing it down to unacceptable speeds. The Banshee was updated to the F variant to improve its characteristics. The cockpit and aerodynamics were improved and the afterburners removed to create a version capable of serving in 1.0.4.

Versions:

NAFA-5-A/B: Original versions, obsolete

NAFA-5-C1: Updated version for .90

NAFA-5-C2: Updated version with more maneuverability

NAFA-5-D5: 1.0.2 version

NAFA-4-J2 Strike Cobra

The NAFA-4 was my first actually good looking fighter of the series, and the only one of the series actually posted on the forums before this thread. back in .23.5 and .24, it was fast, stable, and somewhat maneuverable, performing similarly (but worse in pitch) to the NAFA-7. Of course, the .25 update put in a temporary retirement for the aircraft, which it now has come out of with updated wings and tail fins. It does not quite perform to the same degree that it did before .25.

KSP version .90 allowed the aircraft to be tweaked slightly to look cooler, resulting in the C variant. It was still pretty much forgotten about for a while.

It was later realized how much potential the NAFA-4 design held as a strike fighter, and massive upgrades were undertaken. These resulted in the NAFA-4-D1 and the K-4A (Built by Jon144). These aircraft added ejection, maneuverability, and afterburners to the NAFA-4 series. Both aircraft were upgraded again, resulting in the NAFA-4-F1 and K-4B. These took pilot safety even more into consideration and still improved upon the aircraft in general. Then the NAFA-4-H2 was designed, bringing the aircraft into the 1.0 update.

Of course, the 1.0.3 update wound up aerodynamically breaking the aircraft, leading to an entirely new redesign. The NAFA-4-K resulted from this design, having less parts and being aerodynamically better. The NAFA-4-J2 2-seater Strike Cobra was then built for all of your ground attack needs. It is a bit slower than a NAFA-4-K though.

Variants:

NAFA-4-A1: .23.5 and .24 variant

NAFA-4-B1: .25 variant

NAFA-4-C1: .90 updated variant

NAFA-4-D1: Massively upgraded variant with more maneuverability, an afterburner, and an ejecting cockpit built with less parts.

NAFA-4-E1: Work in progress NAFA-4-D with more oxidizer for the afterburner.

NAFA-4-F1: Version with a custom cockpit to allow for better pilot safety. Also has more afterburner fuel.

NAFA-4-H2: Updated version for 1.0

K-4A Super Cobra: Offshoot design built by Jon144, has a custom cockpit with an ejection seat and an afterburner, but with a higher part count.

K-4B Super Cobra 2: Improved K-4A variant. Built by Jon144.

NAFA-4-K5 King Cobra: 1.0.4 improvement version.

NAFA-4-K6 King Cobra: Upgraded -K5 with airbrakes

NAFA-4-J2 Strike Cobra: 2-seat version

Action Groups:

9: full ejection (parachutes for NAFA-4-D1)

8: canopy ejection (launches the canopy off on the K-4 and NAFA-4-F1, detaches the cockpit on the -4D1. Requires pushing 9 afterwards to deploy parachutes)

3: Airbrakes/Flaps (-H2 and later)

2: Afterburners (Other Afterburner Equipped NAFA-4s)

1: Afterburners (-4D1)

Planned features on future variants:

More afterburner fuel.

NAFA-3

Spoiler

344542FBA929D8231149D2847172DD8F8DC34364

NAFA-3-B1

The NAFA-3 was built as a ground attack aircraft. It originally used a downward sloping cockpit with antenna for more accurate attacking purposes, but its update to 1.0.4 has changed this. It now features a custom cockpit with an ejection seat, but its original purpose of being a low-altitude attack aircraft still remains.

Versions:

NAFA-3-A: Original version

NAFA-3-B1: 1.0.4 updated version.

NAFA-1-B2

The NAFA-1 Wraith was the first NAFA ever developed. It was designed as just a basic warplane and was retired when the NAFA-4 entered service. However, the 1.0.4 update saw the modernization and reintroduction of the aircraft. It is a relatively fast NAFA, and its maneuverability is decent.

Dig what you have so far dude. I really like the battery/cockpit/nosecone situation. I love those nosecones for everything, but man are they unnecessarily heavy. Thats the thing I'd like to see fixed more than anything.

Also really nice and clean thread setup.

I should probably bother working on these more again, plus I'm up to the -25 or -26 now. Kind of abandoned this page awhile back, though I definitely should get it fully updated

And possibly get the -4 and -7 looking as good as they did again

You uploaded the wrong picture to the NAFA-11

Update: The new Nafa-11 Looks awesome! You should turn those front Canards into wing stakes like the F-18 has. Would look awesome.

Update

New aircraft added: NAFA-4-D1 and the K-4A (modified NAFA-4 built by Jon144):

470AC62F75469E99C55019F67994799FC0DB8F74

From left to right: K-4A (built by Jon), NAFA-4-D1, NAFA-4-C1 (for comparison)

Both the K-4A and NAFA-4-D1 are much more maneuverable than past NAFA-4 designs, plus they have the added bonuses of afterburners and the ability to eject. Download and fly them. I really recommend it. They are quite fun to fly.

Left to right: NAFA-4-F1, NAFA-5-C1, K-4B (Built by Jon144)

More new additions to the NAFA fleet have been added, most noticeably the 3 aircraft above. The NAFA-4-F1 features a custom cockpit and more afterburner fuel. The NAFA-5-C1 is essentially a new twin-seat strike fighter entering the force, while the K-4B is a modification of the K-4A with a new cockpit and several more upgrades. On top of that, many of the other entries were updated with text and/or pictures. Have fun looking through this page now!

Update

Going to add a few more aircraft before 1.0 comes out and makes them all obsolete in probably just a couple of hours.

NAFA-17-C3:

NAFA-17-D1:

NAFA-5-C2:

57FAF2FA181F1C53579EBF1D7ED9C8A61DDE491E

The NAFA-17 received a major update, giving it a custom cockpit, afterburner, and higher maneuverability. The -C3 has a low set wing for maneuverability, while the -D1 has a higher wing for better payload carrying purposes.

The NAFA-5 also received a minor update making it far more maneuverable than before.

Update

Post #1:

I probably shouldn't be posting again in such rapid proximity to my last post, but I need a place to post updates about how my aircraft are flying in 1.0. I plan to do that here:

So far I've got the Banshee flying again, and far better than before. I can push it up to 250 m/s at sea level (almost double of what it could do before) now, and it has become far more maneuverable. Stalling seems quite easy at speeds past 200 m/s, but overall I am quite happy with how this plane has updated. I'll definitely have to see if adding some solar panels to the cockpit will help out.

The current model of the Banshee is now the -D1

Here's a teaser picture:

Post #2:

The NAFA-4-F is already proving to be a death trap and will have to be modified decently. I also have to remember to add the new engine part to my fighters sometime.

Post #3:

The NAFA-4 is working again! The version shown is the H2

1.0.2 Update!

F234286ECD503B5D97A4705F5AE223047CE6E412

NAFA-5-E2, XNAFA-31, NAFA-17-E2, NAFA-4-H2

Since 1.0 came out I've been messing around with some of my NAFA aircraft; trying to get them to fly decently again in the new version. I feel like the new NAFA-4(-H2), NAFA-5(-D5,-E2), and NAFA-17(-E2,-F1) variants are ready to be posted. You can find the new variants, along with some new pictures, under their appropriate tabs,

I also just threw together a new plane fairly quickly, the XNAFA-31, and it most certainly shows some promise right now. I've decided to post the download for the experimental aircraft, and I want some name suggestions for it too.

-Happy flying!

There should be a picture for the XNAFA-31 on the main post under its spoiler. I must warn you that with 1.0.3 and 1.0.4 my aircraft perform worse than previously. I experimented a bit with using radiators as parts for my custom cockpits, but discovered a probably bug which makes my roll control surfaces stop working. I am actively thinking of abandoning KSP because of this.

4th Generation NAFA Update! (1.0.4)

hx5owXA.png

Awesome render by esinohio

The massive 4th generation/1.0.4 NAFA update is now live! This update features the modernization of 11 old NAFA aircraft and the release of 5 previous prototypes, for a total of 16 new NAFA models for all of you to try out!

The modernizations have been fairly standard for each aircraft. Engines were upgraded, fuel tanks were replaced, ejection seats were added (to those which needed them), aerodynamics were massively improved, action groups were standardized, and wings were simplified to create a series of faster, stronger performing NAFA aircraft. Several older aircraft modernized with this update are practically new aircraft now!

All of these aircraft were modernized or built within a week, but it took almost 2 weeks for me to get this post ready (all due to laziness on my part). All aircraft have their pages updated, though several of the new descriptions are quite lackluster. Anyways, I'm also posting the entire pack of them up for download. Get it here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ps6ynhhdxeue0e9/AAAdpzzcOVYI0MLNo8EmKi24a?dl=0

List of updated/new aircraft:

NAFA-1

NAFA-3

NAFA-4

NAFA-5

NAFA-6

NAFA-7

NAFA-11

NAFB-12

NAFA-13

NAFA-17

NAFA-18

NAFA-19

NAFA-26

NAFA-31

NAFA-32

NAFA-34

Anyways, I hope you enjoy this. Typing up the main thread took up my entire day, though I did have a bit of fun with the warranty. I'm admittedly over a week behind in posting this, and with all the talk of the next KSP update I knew I had to get this out the door ASAP. Thanks for looking at my post, and please post any praise/criticism below, along with anything I may have missed in the main post update.

NAFA-4-J2 Update!

E419C2154015D25D6756F8FD645D14A75C2BBD7E

NAFA-4-J2

Today's update comes with a couple new NAFA-4 variants.

Firstly there is the NAFA-4-I6, which is essentially a NAFA-4-I5 with 2 air-brakes added and a removed useless structural piece which was left-over from precious cockpit construction.

The other NAFA-4 variant is the NAFA-4-J2 Strike Cobra. This aircraft is equipped with a 2-seater cockpit so it can handle more advanced weapon operations. Grad it under the NAFA-4 tab!

Both aircraft have also been added to the 4th gen NAFA download file.

Also, I'll be updating the ejection seats slightly on all NAFAs for safer use over these next couple of days.

Just posting a quick notification that this thread is now considered a showcase. Actually, there might be some more notifications about the craft on here I have to make real quickly.

The NAFB-12 had some problems in 1.0.4 with wintgs exploding. It has not been tested in 1.0.5. Proceed with caution

The ejection seats I've been using have too much thrust, and parachutes may not deploy at full speeds. Proceed with caution, and I'll have to update the ejection seats in the future.

The engines all still require updating. If you want to do it, just change them to the new afterburning jets. I'll have to update the aircraft once I stop playing From The Depths.

Also, stop using the NAFA-18. The new engines probably extend too far. It will need a full update on my part.

Ok, going to briefly revive this thread because I need to ask people for their opinions on something. I'm thinking of starting a comic thread similar to @Kuzzter's or @Parkaboy's work, but based around fighter combat missions in a war perhaps a bit similar to Vietnam or Korea (Mostly doing this because I want a Jeb in Kuzzter's comic, though that plot point will likely come later when everyone's already forgotten about it).I would use mostly NAFA aircraft with a few other designs I'd have to make.

So with that I have a few questions.

1: Is anyone interested in this?

2: Is this concept too dark for the forums?

3: What NAFAs should go to which side (I plan on the Protagonists mostly flying NAFA-5 Banshees)

If I do go forward with the comic, many of the planes here are likely to get an engine update. If not, I will likely postpone the updates for later.

In the meantime, I'm going to have to go and fix the main post. It seems that my spoilers were gotten rid of, so it just looks like a big mess right now. I'll try doing that as I wait for responses.

Well, you missed that bus unfortunately--all the Jebs are back in their own 'verses as of this morning :) However I encourage you to let all the stories banging around in your head get out and onto the Forum. Not everyone will read it, not everyone will like it, but enough will--and really, if the author enjoys telling a story, nothing else matters. :)

I can still say he was teleported through time and make him go missing at some point. Technically the Jebs got taken from all the stories,so the Jeb from this one could get taken from any point in time in the story. At least, that's how I could hand wave it.
