[0.22] ISA MapSat 4.0 Dev Build

Recommended Posts

@Innsewerants:

For some months I wondered, why ISA Mapsat 4.0 Dev. did not run on my Linux box until I found a hint in a forum entry, that the 'hilo.dat' file should be renamed to 'Hilo.dat' (capital 'H'). Since I did so, Mapsat runs perfect on my Ubuntu 13.10, x86_64 machine.

Today I looked into the old source of Mapsat and checked, if I can find the reason for this behaviour. I found there, that 'Hilo.dat' is written with capital 'H'. It seems that ISA_MapGen.exe (I use it, as found on another forum entry, on Linux with mono) uses hilo.dat without cap 'H'. Maybe, if it's still the same reason why hilo.dat is not accepted by MapSat 4.0 in Linux (game crashes on switch to launch pad) you might take care of that in future versions.

Thanks for the really nice Plugin! :-)

Dabbling around in modding myself, but some of the folk on the fora these days are seriously making think about not bothering...~I don't really want orders coming at me from the internet, of all places, telling me which bit of my behaviour is baffling,what my motivations are or for me to get of my *behind* and do some work...

SOMETHING baffling is going on here, but its not insewerants's behaviour.

Many mod makers are simple hobbyists tinkering with games they play, and who will leave them behind. I think people find these the most troublesome because they'll drop something promising, support it for a while and then drift off. I think what you are seeing is basically brand loyalty. The lord built a town and showed it to the people, but up and left without someone to maintain it and so it crumbles away until forgotten. Most people don't want to build a new town, they just want upkeep and progress on their current town. I admit I find it amazing to see how entitled some users can beâ€â€it is rude to tell the maker how to spend their time and demand of them.

But, providing something for public use inherently comes with its own share of responsibility. Choosing to release your work means you need to be upfront about your position, "Hey guys, this is just some tinkering I did. Keep in mind I may flake whenever." or to accept that burden of responsibility by telling people when you no longer do and taking down the project. Whether you like it or not, people may very well come to depend on what you built and I don't get paid is a piss-poor excuse; an author who doesn't want attention or the pressure to perform should simply be upfront about it or keep their work to themselves. The larger your mod, the more people who are bound to use it to define their game and slowly it becomes a sort of social obligation.

Take the Minecraft Forge for example. If development on that simply ceased, it would deal a devastating blow to the modding community. To choose to be a member there is to shoulder a very large chunk of responsibility. It is truly a unpaid job. Now, I won't tell you who is right. When the players are not customers, they have no bargaining leverage. But to simply say the community is acting churlish because they expect a project to be continued is not unreasonable. Be wary of those who latch and follow, they are a gift and your burden. You don't get to choose your community, you only get to choose how you interact with them.

For the record - Innswerants isn't completely inactive. His blog has some recent updates explaining the delay (and the update to the MapSat licence). Health issues are more important than a mod for a game. Anyone who believes their sense of self-entitlement is more important than Innserwerants' health and well being can join the queue to go eva sans spacesuit.

If you want to use it in career mode, you'll need to edit the part configs and add a "TechRequired" line, or use ModuleManager to add the appropriate variables to the parts:

@PART[ISA_MapSat]:Final
{
TechRequired = scienceTech
}
@PART[ISA_GPS]:Final
{
TechRequired = scienceTech
}

How do I add that without modulemanager? The files are part.cgf in isa_mapsta and isa_gps folders? In what part of the file do I have to add the lines? Thanks!

So I have ran into a problem with ISA. The button that is sopposed to be in the bottom is missing and when I click in the area it should be in I get this screen.

Any Ideas? On solution I found said to make sure ...Kerbal Space Program\Plugins\PluginData\ISA_MapSat is correct and everything looks to be in those folders.

If you're using the older version that install location is correct, but if you're using the newest dev version, it should go in the game data folder.

The majority of the people interested in this mod aren't going to read the author's blog or know about his health problems, they just like the addon and want more. Wanting things and entitlement are not the same thing. Turn the smug down a couple notches.

I don't mean to make an advertisement, and I am in no way affiliated with any of the authors.

But if you are searching for a scanning mod and you can't get ISAMapSat to work, there is another mod currently arising and gaining popularity among the community.

Search for it on the Addon forums and you won't miss it.

I will withhold myself from expressing any opinions and giving TL;DR's to people who can't be bothered to form their own about the qualities and comparisons of both mods.

Yea but telling the name of this other Mod would be helpfull...

Due this mod is 1000% dead.

Or the creator had yet moved his ass to fix it.

(Sorry, may be it is free hobby work.... but (as myselfe doing stuff (not here), I see it as a task of responsibility to keep my products working as long they are public).

Jeeze, what an attitude (not just this reply but many others) :( A person who offers up a mod is offer a little (or a BIG piece) of their own life for free, gratis, nada. I have had 4 games published, for money, those require a commitment beyond passing interest. Work I do for free does not. Nor does a free donation require more from anyone else. It is time users here in Kerbal land understand this, or failing to comprehend this simple fact get off their arses, learn to code and develop their own solutions without attacking those who give for free. One thing has come from this thread, I very much doubt I will ever bring my last 25 years of coding to bear here for the benefit of users.

Oh yeah, the link you have been too lazy to find is ... http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/55832-PLUGIN-PARTS-WIP-SCANsat-terrain-mapping

Fine, hold yourself to such a standard, but it is the height of arrogance to demand it of others. You have no idea what the circumstances of another person might be. Additionally, mod makers are under no obligation to us, explicit or implied, to provide updates, ETAs, patches, or anything else. They do what they do free of charge, but at considerable expense of their own time and energy. You are not out any money at all by this mod not being updated, so stop acting like a spoiled, ungrateful child.

Not cool.

Read his blog and be ashamed.

People are just showing passion for a mod they like. It may sound rough, but they just like it and would like the author to update it. I personally don't like seeing people imply that someone should be laboring for them without so much as a "please", but it's just words and, in my mind, I tend to translate the negative messages into neutral ones. (This is the only way to survive in a call center, which I have had the pleasure of working in)

As far as I know, this mod can still be made to work in the current KSP version but requires some fiddling (it did not break further between .21 and .22 to my knowledge). Read a few pages back in the thread for more info.

The mod mentioned by Xentoe took a little digging to find, and is still in development, but is available in a limited form. Check it out in this thread:

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/55832-PLUGIN-PARTS-WIP-SCANsat-terrain-mapping

It looks promising and apparently works right now, but is definitely work-in-progress.

Well, it seems to me that John.E's judgement wasn't inclusive to the whole community, but more to the entitled "minecraft forums" types. I refuse to believe that this entire community is full of those, as I know better.

Maybe you should re-evaluate your own opinion of this community...

Just a thought.

Anyways, I eagerly await ISA's return as well, but I can do other things while I wait. Check out SCANsat in the addon dev forum if your desperate for a mapper plugin. It's coming along pretty nicely, IMHO.

And I assume you are not sitting in judgment there foo :P

I have no doubt that I am not 'righteous'. In fact, it highly likely that I am anything but. :D

However, I have noticed a preponderance (though not all by a long chalk) of uptight posters on the KSP forum who seem to think that a mod author owes them something. I simply wanted to point out in simple (and pointed) terms that this is not the case and if those users to whom my post was addressed really want a maintained feature they have only to get off their butts, write some code and commit to maintaining it. :sticktongue:

And yes, you are correct, I did post in anger (for my sins). There are too many of these 'I am owed' posts and even though I am not the target they do **ss me off as they are unwarranted. :mad:

On topic though, I notice the recent addition to scanning packages seems to be fairing well and developing nicely :) It will be interesting to see what happens to ISA in the future, will it develop, will morph, will it wither and pass away. Only time will tell and we will just have to patient.
