EVA when landed = flag planted for giving experience points surely?

Recommended Posts

Why should planting a flag grant more experience points than simply performing EVA while landed on a planet? I don't think the flag should be necessary. (If you remove the flag right away (so the solar system doesn't end up littered with flags) does that affect the experience gained?)

I've not played this contract yet. Could you explain exactly what happens?

This has nothing to do with contracts. He's talking about kerbal experience points.

THX1138: You can always just remove the flag from the tracking station after the Kerbal has returned home, to be safe :)

Thanks, I guess I'll do that. In the interest of fairness though, I must press my original request for maximum experience points to be granted to all Kerbals that EVA while landed and not only those brandishing flags. I cannot stand injustice! I try to fight it whenever I can!

Is it just me, or does XP gain generally seem a lot less... granular than you expected? I figured it would be a thing of having levels at, say, 10, 100, 1000 xp with many types of activity granting XP, with diminishing returns for doing the same thing. As it stands, it seems like there are only a handful of XP points that it's possible to get, with zero gain whatsoever for duplication. It feels really odd that I can fly 20 different orbital missions with my pilot, but I still only get any XP at all for that first flight. Basically it seems like the game just tells you "nope, there is simply no way to have a pilot worth a damn until you get him to the moon somehow" which is kind of bizarre and constraining.

While you'd want to avoid exploiting easy missions, I would think that players would at least have some option of "grinding" XP on their astronauts to get their skills up. In fact that seems like one of the main ways an inexperienced player would pull themselves out of being "stuck" when they have done the easy missions -- at the least they could (slowly) level their guys up a bit to make the more difficult missions easier and more lucrative to complete.

sherkaner: Remember this is the first iteration of kerbal experience. It's obviously not going to be fully fleshed out on the first go. Also, planting a flag on the Mun doesn't actually get you to level 2, but orbit does get you to level 1. I think you need to go to at least Minmus for level 2 :)

Oh yeah, fair enough, I wasn't expecting it to be fully fleshed out. But still, the starting point seems pretty darned limiting, which surprised me. I just hope that their vision for the system is to be much, much for granular in how Kerbals get XP.

In all fairness, they think the NEXT VERSION is ready for 1.0. In all fariness right back, I don't agree with them :D

In regards to the flag thing, yes I think it's dumb. EVAing is what would actually give you the experience of being on a world, not sticking a stick into the ground.

I personally plant the flag, title it "asdf," and then immediately take it back down and head home.
