When Do You Give Reputation?

As a general rule, if something on the internet makes me laugh or even smile, I owe it a like/rep/whatever.

Apart from really funny stuff, I usually rep cool replicas, awesome screenshots, clever stock-ish designs, good mods, people helping each other, new users... Yeah, I give away my rep like it grows on trees. :P

I am always very conservative with these things. Earning a rep point from me is difficult, because the post has to be so good that it reminds me that the button even exists, and then some more. I should start repping some of the mods I use all the time, so far I've only remembered to do that once, maybe twice. If I'm in a good mood (may happen more than once on a good year) I may even give rep more than once a week, but normally I go months without giving any rep. It also bothers me when I get rep for an average post, such as this one. I prefer only getting rep for posts I'm proud of.

I pretty much give rep only if a post is very helpful. This can be information, or mods I find interesting and useful, or just a very insightful idea. On rare occasions if someone makes me laugh I may spread a little rep.

I often forget the button exists as well.

Pretty much:

  • Hilarious post
  • Helpful post
  • Post with a good idea
  • Mods that I couldn't live without
  • Posts with a really cool craft

I'm not exactly stingy with my rep.

Pretty much exactly this, with the addition that if I see a new user who has not received their first rep (gray bar) and they post something decent, I can't resist giving them their first rep.

But at least he's dead.... I think.

But yeah, reputation is given by somebody if they help you out, make you laugh, or have good posts in general. If you think they deserve some, do it. :)

I give rep for helpful posts, informative or well reasoned posts (including ones which rebut my own), for posts which I think just needed to be said, and for interesting fanworks stuff. I really should give more rep to modders, although in my defense I don't use many mods.

Whenever someone posts something that I want to encourage. That can be a cool design or helpful tip, but it can also be a kind expression of thanks to another helpful poster or even a gracious retreat from previous bad behaviour.

Make the forums better for everyone and you get rep.
