Astronaut John Young has died.

John Young, an astronaut who became the ninth person to walk on the moon has died. He was 87.

NASA announced Young's death on Twitter Saturday afternoon. Young flew into space six times during his 42 year NASA career, including two trips to the moon. He commanded the Apollo 16 mission to the moon in 1972. Young was also on the first Space Shuttle mission in 1981.

Why all the long faces? He spent over 34 days in space and lived to the ripe old age of 87. If you're going to feel sadness, feel sadness for the rest of us whose pale lives will never compare to his.

Rest in your well-earned peace, Captain Young. I'm pretty sure you smuggled a corned beef sandwich into Heaven with you. :wink:

Two Gemini flights, two Apollo flights, and two shuttle flights.  Flew four different kinds of spacecraft, including the maiden flights of two of them.  Even the first corned beef sandwich in orbit.

Farewell, sir!  You were a legend.
