Loving the new update. turns out rescueing a kerbal from orbit is really hard without detailed information or sas -
The purpose of the space planes

I think the word you're looking for is plaid. -
Kerbodyne SSTO Division: Omnibus Thread

Can't wait for wanderfound mk3 planes -
I think the science is justifed, a better scientist will be able to extract more meaningful data / conclusions than a less experienced one. ISP however, is based on the engine and not the pilot
-
Ah, As I plan to run linux I should probably go with nVidia
-
Is there any particular reason nvida cards work better with ksp. I know that Physx is disabled in unity so I am not sure of the rationale behind getting a more expensive nvidia card vs a cheaper AMD one

Why is the speed of light a limit?
peachoftree replied to peachoftree's topic in Science & Spaceflight
For everyone wondering about what I meant when I said why, I wanted a mathematical / simply explained reason which I got. Thank you all! Sorry for the confusion. Edit: I thought of a good way to think of it say all your energy was kinetic energy. From the Equasions E=mc^2 and KE = 1/2mv^2 we can substitute like so: 1/2mv^2 = mc^2 since v = c we find that 1/2m = m the only way this is possible is if m is 0 or infinity. We know it is not 0 so we can assume that we have infinite mass, which is both mathematically and realistically impossible. However, this does work for an object with 0 mass and is why photons travel at the speed of light. -
Better Beta Instruction Challenge
peachoftree replied to Pecan's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
As it stands, veiw count will massively overpower being stickied or drawingboarded, I would up both of those by a factor of 10. -
This challenge contains spoilers from the movie Intersteller. By opening the spoilers below you accept the terms and conditions and agree not to complain about said spoilers of which you have been forewarned Your challenge is to dock two vessels that are spinning. Simple enough right? Nope. The Kendurance has suffered an airlock failure, initialing a rapid spin and somehow placing it on an aerobrakeing trajectory (whether or not you hit the ground is up to you). Luckily, STS-302 was en route course and has been redirected to evacuate the surviving crew and save the station! Rules: Pe has to be inside the atmosphere docking does not have to be inside the atmosphere, but does have to happen while the Pe is in the atmosphere the Kendurance has to be spinning during docking you cannot control / use sas on the Kendurance until it you may not align docking ports before the spin is started Mods are o.k except for mechjeb Scoring (lower is better): start with your semimajor axis (average between Pe and Ap) in Kilometers, rounded to the nearest integer -5 for video with dramatic music -20 for a Kendurance that looks like the Endurance (it just jas to be a ring station to count) -30 if STS-302 that looks like the shuttle thing -50 for active vessel that uses a dorsal or ventral docking port (its on the top or bottom) -5 for each Km your Pe is in the atmosphere, rounded to the nearest integer -20 if you avert reentry after docking with the Endurance (only use the shuttles engines for this) -10 if your ship does not die (you only have to dock for this challenge) -70 if the docking takes place in the second highest tier on the atmosphere indicator -30 if it takes place in the highest tier +10 if it does not take place in the atmosphere +time it takes you to dock in minuets * 2 (take a screen before and after docking showing your time in the top left) scoreboard: 1. 2. 3. coming soontm

install alacarte, it allows you to change applications icons as well as give regular scripts icons in your application launcher. KSP's actual icon wont be changed but you can add a nice HD clicky one for your dock or other launcher

Anyone else want to like career mode but just can't?
peachoftree replied to Fourjays's topic in KSP1 Discussion
My beef with career mode is that once your finished the tech tree the game turns into sandbox mode, even with contracts. I invariably have several millions worth of in the bank just for the things I would normally have to do to complete the tech tree. Why bother with all that when you can do whatever you want right away with sandbox. -
The thing about cargo cyclers is that they only save you so much mass because you still have to have life support at the destination. To make them totally feasible you need a base at the mars side of things so that you don't have to carry several months worth of life support with you for your stay on mars, making them useless for exploration missions where there is no existing infrastructure such as a station or a base.

Why is the speed of light a limit?
peachoftree replied to peachoftree's topic in Science & Spaceflight
ok. I can understand why the speed of light is a limit if mass increases with velocity, but why does mass increase with velocity? -
Say I was moving in a rocket traveling at c, and I do a 1 m/s burn. What stops me from traveling at c + 1m/s?

When do you do your Gravity Turns?
peachoftree replied to Tank Buddy's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
When I hit 100 m/s, I turn over very slowly, I aim to be at 45 degrees by 12,000m (FAR) -
Low frame rates with new hardware
peachoftree replied to endl's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
Because you cpu has two cores, basically it can run two things at once. Obviously you can run more than one program at a time because each core is split into threads, which allows more than two processes to run at a time. However, the most processing power a single thread can use is the processing power of a single core, since you have two cores, unity is maxing out its thread and cannot expand. Some programs get around this by multi-threading which is where they run on more than one thread. Unfortunately, Unity (and most games for that matter) is not multi-threaded. If you were to look at the occupation of each core of the CPU, you would probably see that unity is taking up 100% of its core. TL;DR: Unity can only take up one core of your CPU, of which you have two so you see unity as running at half power. -
I just realized that I was not including mail in rebates in the prices, with the $50 that saves and a cheaper mobo I should be able to get a 128GB SSD for the OS and games and keep the Standard drive for things like photos:D Also I have the 650 watt PSU because an old one broke on a pc my dad was no longer using so he got a warranty exchange for it.
-
I got the i5 4690k because it was actually cheaper than all the i5's except the 4440 but only by $10 if I picked one up from the micro center I live 20 minuets away from. I do not plan on overclocking it, but now that I realize it It would be good to have a mobo where I have the possibility so that I can upgrade it more in the future. How about I scratch the ssd and get this instead?

1/10 never seen you
-
I have my build mostly sorted out for now, but one thing I was if my mobo is right for my build, mainly will it impact performance, as it is on the lower end of the price spectrum. Any other feedback on other parts is greatly appreciated (first time build noob here). Budget: around $600 (includes mouse and keyboard, does not include display, PSU, or storage as I already have those components) Purpose: To play KSP with things like EVE and Astronomers pack, also some other games and stuff

How do I cover up this cluster of 4?
peachoftree replied to Bman1296's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
You Cannot cover them in the stock game, however I severely doubt that you want to go back to a 3.5m stack after you go back down (I may be mistaken), but if that is the case than you should use a 3.75m - 2.5 m adapter on the bottom of the tanks and continue a 2.5m stack above them than it will appear to be in-line and wont stick out nearly as much. -
what GPU price range should I be looking at to run things like Astronomers Visual Pack on high graphics settings? (sorry if my questions seem noobish, long time laptop user here )
