A more intuitive tech tree
Slam_Jones replied to CaptainKipard's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I think they've both already been mentioned, but... - Probe cores before manned cores (or at least much sooner) - Atmospheric jet parts, making Kerbal sciencing easier from the get-go - Docking ports, even if you start with the smallest one -
So, no weapons or anything, but here's the two I cam up with: TIE-1 TIE-Interceptor (Ion engines are behind the SAS units on the back)
-
Eh, forget those crazy specific contracts. I put a Kerbal on Laythe, and now I can get 300,000 creds literally whenever I want. Much easier.

Tier One Space Center CONFIRMED: It's a barn!
Slam_Jones replied to Starwhip's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Awesome! Can't wait to try out the new buildings! -
A single Ion engine will move anything (in space) Beyond that, it's a matter of how long you want to babysit your burns. Less engines mean longer burns. More engines mean more power drain. Personally, for anything beyond a probe, I use Ion engines as a secondary/emergency booster, due to the high efficiency. Using them as a main engine means it will take a very long time to get wherever you're trying to go.

The Kegway-Yes, a Kerbal Segway!

That has to be one of the greatest pictures of all time. Thank you. -
What is the coolest thing you've done in KSP?
Slam_Jones replied to BarackOshizzle's topic in KSP1 Discussion
My Hawkeye Cruiser: Kerbin Orbit w/ lander can Best ship I've ever made. Fully capable of reaching anywhere in the solar system and sciencing (it's a word now) the f*** out of the place. Plenty of docking ports for fuel cans, landers (like the one shown in the picture), spaceplanes, etc. etc. Basically the only way to make better ships (IMO) is to make em look better... but basically, this ship does everything. Low pass over Moho -
How does one land a spaceplane on water?
Slam_Jones replied to InterCity's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Before yesterday, I would've said it was nigh impossible, but last night I had an SSTO coming back into orbit that didn't quite have enough fuel to make it to land... so I deployed chutes around 1000m (two of them attached near the rear), and used thrusters on low power to keep the nose from hitting the water first. Smacked down at around 16 m/s (mostly horizontal momentum) and lost the rear engines, but everything else stayed intact. Not recommended, but definitely possible. -
Playing on Hard Mode, spend a solid 30 mins designing a new ship to science up the Mun. Used over half my budget, but if successful, I'll have plenty enough resources to continue. Launch it fine, get it to LMO fine, start to science and realize I forgot a Comm. Not too big a problem, I can still return to LKO, de-orbit, and collect the science that way. Start my burn to LKO, and... out of fuel. Launch a rescue vessel with most of my remaining funds, meet up with the stranded ship, and... out of fuel. Welp, time for a new career!

The NaN-Kraken caught my cruiser before it got to Dres a week or two ago :\ Didn't hyperedit or mod or anything either. The ship appeared in the Tracking Station as if it had run out of electricity (basically showing up as an unknown object (it had TRGs so it def still had electricity)), and when I clicked the Fly button, BOOM! Kraken attack.

Interesting, so aerobraking isn't possible, but it can get pulled in by all the moons. I've noticed that with anything I send to Jool, it eventually gets ejected from the system due to grav assists. Did that happen eventually to the asteroid? Or did it somehow get a truly stable orbit? I just love the idea of flying to a new planet or something and having more moons than there should be. Just adds an extra layer or exploration
-
Ohhh, totally forgot about that aspect of it. Derp. So with stock KSP, it's basically impossible. Good to know.
-
So, I've been wondering this for a little while now... what are the chances of an asteroid becoming a new moon without any interference? Basically, what are the chances that an asteroid will come close enough to Kerbin to aerobrake and get pulled into orbit without striking the planet? I've heard of it occurring naturally (I think), so I'm curious if this has happened to anyone? On one of my career modes, I'm at year 50 or so and it hasn't happened, though I've tracked many many asteroids as they make close passes or impacts. Of course I could fly out, intercept, and drag one into orbit, but I'm not quite skilled enough to manage that yet

Jetpack Only Landing on Ike
Slam_Jones replied to Geometrian's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Nice. Closest I've ever done to this was on a No-Revert career where I sent a lander to the Mun. Landed fine, collected science and everything, took off to get back into orbit. Due to some poorly timed burns, the ship was unable to reach a stable orbit. Not wanting to lose a Kerbal so early in the game, I had him abandon ship and reach a stable orbit using his jetpack. The ship crashed back to the Mun but the Kerbal survived, and was picked up out of orbit on my next trip there. Trying to do something like that on Ike tho... not sure I would've managed it Edited for typos -
What kind of contracts do you want to see in KSP 0.90
Slam_Jones replied to .DJFrostbite's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Love the "Space Tourism" idea. Take X Kerbal to space for Y period of time and return them safely. Take X Kerbal to existing Station/Base Y for Z period of time and return them safely. Take X numbers of Kerbals to space etc. etc. Etc. -
I've run into this problem before, and what I did to fix it was one of two things: made sure there are no asymmetric attachments (I.E. the fuel can(?) attached to the side of the ship). The other thing I do (for when I can't/don't feel like keep it symmetric) is to adjust the thrust limiter on your engines. What I do is turn off SAS and RCS, and make sure the station is completely still. I'll give the engines a small amount of power, observe which way the ship starts spinning, then adjust and repeat until it doesn't spin at all (or a negligible amount). Hope this helps!

The Dukes of Kazzard Buggy Jump Challenge!
Slam_Jones replied to Yakky's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Awesome challenge! I have a, well, Munbase that I've been roving around the Mun and jumping craters with. I'll find a good spot and get a vid for the challenge! And because I didn't see anything about it in the rules, I might as well ask: is there anything against using rovers that are attached to things with docking ports? I.E. my Munbase is basically a MunTrain. Can I use this? Edit: Another question while I'm thinking of it... My MunBase is already on the Mun, so I can't really show how the whole thing got there (being done over 7 or so launches). Would it be acceptable to send another pod out (with screenshots) to meet up with it as a showing of how the whole thing got there? -
Flew one of my Cruisers into the sun. It randomly exploded a couple thousand meters above the surface due to heat. Totally worth it.
-
Saw it on Steam a number of times, eventually got curious enough to check it out. Didn't buy it immediately, but I'm glad I did in the end.
-
I've had a few instances where I've destroyed the launch pad due to bad VAB placement, either clipping into the floor or an absence of stability clamps.
-
Never used it. Never plan to.
