  1. That's not to say you cannot reverse entropy locally. You just need to use energy. Which creates even more entropy somewhere else. Bummer.
  2. I've personally never heard the term "energy generator" - most of the time it would be something like "electric generator", which is, albeit maybe unintuitive, technically correct - they do generate electric current from some other source of energy. "Energy harvesting" makes me think of the process of waiting for something to grow, which in this context doesn't seem entirely right. I'd propose the term "energy convertor", as that's exactly what it does - converts energy of one form to some other form.
  3. I don't think anyone fails to understand your point, especially after the third time you exlained it We are just having a little fun with impossible ideas, is all.
  4. I have seen a similar idea somewhere (probably yt comment section, but bear with it for a second) - what if we put a huge magnet into orbit, and then put up "gates" of coils in opposite orbit of the same trajectory? The magnet would pass through them and generate electricity. The idea is neat, but would crash and burn (figuratively AND literally) pretty quickly. Not to mention all the engineering problems of creating a perfect gate sequence and transferring all the power to the ground. I'd imagine the huge coil you are describing wouldn't even last an orbit - the gravitational perturbances of all the objects of the solar system would most likely alter its orbit enough to miss the Earth pretty fast.

  7. I'm not sure how spinning that ring would work, if even (probably dependent on the axis around which it would rotate). Plus the stuff Leszek described. And we might also want to use some of that energy... How would we transfer it from the coil to the surface? I'd take the exercise bike any day
  8. It's been a while, but from what I recall from high school, the magnet inside/next to a coil has to move in order to generate any current - how exactly would you propose we exploit the Earth's magnetic field to generate electricity for everyone?

  11. I don't think it's going to affect people who don't want to monetize their videos - it seems to me that this is mostly aimed at the "big guys" who generate sufficient revenue - at least it was pointed out multiple times by the article. Unless your channel has thousands of subscribers (or more), you will probably be considered "not that popular". Forcing monetization on "the common folk" wouldn't really make any sense if you ask me. EDIT: Seems to me that this is just a "heya partner, we're gonna make even moar money together than we already do" kinda deal. The only bad outcome, at least for me, is that some uploaders will ultimately put a few videos behind a paywall (whether the contract forces them to or not), which will make me slightly irritated - about as much as some uploaders banning their videos in certain countries (which can be proxied, but it's still annoying).
  12. Landing on Tylo from 30 km orbit with 3100 m/s? I'd call that a success. Congratulations! I have no idea about your TWR values, so I don't know for sure - it sounds like you could squeeze more from your lander, though. I would even consider starting from 10k, lowering periapsis to be just over the land (landing at the equator, you are unlikely to be encountering land at altitudes >6600 m, most likely at the ~4 km region), and waiting for Pe to start the burn (when your vertical velocity is close to zero - and keep it that way, more or less) - as I said, the lower you end up after killing horizontal, the more dV you will save from gravity losses. Cutting it this close is risky, though, and will most likely kill you at least a few times Try to land for the higher ground (1800 m is really a bit low), if you can, for additional dV savings! And most of all, good luck
  13. You could (and should) probably start a lot lower, depending on your TWR (and therefore the time it takes to kill the horizontal velocity). Best case scenario (which is hard to get, but oh so satisfying when you do) is to finish killing horizontal velocity just as you are about to land (a few tens of meters above ground max). I only managed a landing like that once, but it was the best.
  14. Correct! I had a shark though, once. It was delicious. The user below me likes to put his bb code tags in the posts by hand.
  15. I believe there was a myth about some low frequency like that causing people's bowels to... Move spontaneously. It was disproved, I think. 110 dB is pretty loud though, and might cause pain or damage when listened to for too long, even if the frequency is unhearable. Anyway - 8/10, a helpful article is always appreciated.
  16. I had no problems taking off from the runway with my first scientific plane - on the contrary, the bumps pretty much threw me into the air. Landing was the hard part. But then again, landing a plane that takes off and flies at 20 m/s is hard anywhere in KSP (thank SQUAD for parachutes). Anyway, upgrading the runway is not all that expensive and will pay for itself if you really want to include planes in your space program.
