We'd be all dead or mutated because of rockets dropping hypergolic (LF+O =~ Aerozine50+NTO) or nuclear stages from space. The fall of mankind would have led to the disparition of all cities on the planet, and the survivors would have mutated in grotesque small green creatures with irremediable damages to their mental capacities... Wait what ?

Building a ring around any body is an extremely stupid idea anyway: gravity is an attractive force only (except if you involve negative masses but let's not involve negative masses), this means that at the slightiest movement in the orbit, one side of the ring will come closer, and the other side will get further; then the closer side will be more attracted, getting closer, and getting more attracted... So engines or not, your ring will probably end up crashing anyway. In the case of a ring orbiting Earth, then you might want to step away from Himalaya.

Since a few days, I have had some lag while playing KSP, even when the game was not doing anything that consumed too much resources (ie: stacking stuff in the VAB or flying a 40 part upper stage + payload outside atmosphere). And by lag I mean 5fps. I originally thought that my install was broken and used too much of my CPU so I checked my CPU usage: overall, it was around 15-20%. The problem is that this stupid CPU said: "Hey, no one's using me, so I'm going to get to sleep and clock at 770 MHz, the things running should have no problem keeping up". And we all know that KSP asks a lot from the CPU, and especially clock speed for processing physics; so the result: KSP is slower when not doing anything than when flying hundred parts ships. I ended up loading some programs in the background to increase CPU usage to get better fps in KSP... And now it's there running nothing but Chrome and iTunes, Turbo Boosting itself at 2.9 GHz for 6% of usage... Any suggestions ? Config: (Not sure this is the right place to ask this, please move the thread if not)

So that happened: Playing KSP, in flight with a 40+ mod install, no ATM, no DTL, no OpenGL... So, I don't think we should trust Windows 10's Task Manager for RAM usage anymore... this or I discovered a magical mod combination that kills KSP's RAM usage (modlist in my sig if you're interested). Anyone seen that before ? Edit: hanging around 1350 MB in the VAB.

The orbit is indeed different. And this is a good thing: if you had exactly the same orbit as your target, then you would just hang around it while never reaching it. The difference in orbit is what allows you to get closer to your target, as the orbits meet at one point. The orbits are identical only when relative speed is 0 and when the two ships are really close to each other, but that basically means you are one RCS puff away from docking.

I thought they fixed that scene change crashing
Gaarst replied to mikegarrison's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Memory issues, 32bit KSP can't handle more than ~3.7GB, can't be fixed unless KSP is ported to Unity 64bit. Which should happen in 1.1. -
Brachistochrone to Mars with Falcon 9 boosters
Gaarst replied to sevenperforce's topic in Science & Spaceflight
No. Crossfeed is not magic. A payload fraction of 33% is. I think you got a bit confused by the fact that the Falcon 9 first stage could SSTO. That means it can put its own mass in orbit, and maybe an astronaut sitting on top but that's it, and using all of its fuel. Even when not considering TWR needs, two F9 stages cannot carry a third one into orbit, unless the third uses all its fuel: carrying unspent fuel decreases dV because you don't use it, and decreases dV because it makes your payload heavier. A good thing to realise your mistake is to think about other rockets: the F9 first stage is not the first first stage to have SSTO capabilities. Actually it is quite common that first stages have over 9 km/s of dV when on their own, but they have to carry a whole rocket, so they don't SSTO. If strapping 3 core stages was enough to put entire stages in orbit, we would probably have reached Neptune with Delta-IV Heavys by now.- 20 replies

Brachistochrone to Mars with Falcon 9 boosters
Gaarst replied to sevenperforce's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I don't follow you there: putting a 400t heavy first stage in orbit kinda counts for a payload. Putting an empty 20t stage to orbit is doable, as long as you use the fuel in it. A Falcon 9 cannot put 200t in orbit, so 2 Falcon 9s strapped together cannot put a 400t stage sitting in between them in orbit. Also, you know that reentry heat thing up right ? Recovering a stage from a slow suborbital flight is doable. Recovering a stage from an orbital flight, which subsequently reentered at 7.8 km/s is a bit less doable, unless you shield your stage with a lot of ablative protection and make it a lot stronger to withstand the aerodynamic forces that would really like to rip it off; then you might have a chance to recover it, but only because it would be too heavy to lift itself from the pad.- 20 replies

How can I decrease crashes in my game?
Gaarst replied to SlabGizor117's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
ATM is getting more and more useless as mods and the game now include [insert-texture-format-here] textures which are already converted to the "memory-friendly" format ATM uses. On the other hand, you could use Dynamic Texture Loader (sticky on Add-ons releases page) which significantly decreases the memory used, at the cost of slower performance and longer loading times. (I don't use it myself, just reporting what I read) -

What's the best tool to plan multiple flybys in a row?
Gaarst replied to smjjames's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
You do know that Flyby Finder also exists for the stock game, right ? -
Nothing exciting, just rolled a rocket around...
-
Rolling a rocket around works... approximately: tried to move my RSS lunar rocket around to display it, after removing non visible parts (from 169 to 45 parts!) and emptying fuel tanks (from 2200t to 150t): Felt like Fitzcarraldo for a time... with less boat and hill, and more rocket and runway

That is totally how I did it so far !
-
Why didn't I never do this before ?

Sizes for stages
Gaarst replied to AlextheBodacious's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
NecroBones has got you both covered: SpaceY adds 5m diameter parts (SpaceY Expanded even adds 7.5m parts), and Fuel Tanks Plus adds taller models of all stock tanks (plus the ability to change their textures in game to your liking). Though I agree it would be a nice thing to have in stock; even if stock KSP doesn't need 5m tanks (considering dV requirements) and if new parts are on the What Not To Suggest Common Suggestions list. -
Jet fuel can't melt steel beams!

Don't the -forced3d11 (or -d3d11, not sure) and -forceopengl tricks transfer some RAM usage to VRAM ?
-
Put some Kerbals in my RSS Moon space station: they are the first crew (3 Kerbals) to be on a long term stay outside LEO, planned mission duration is 150 days.
-
On my list of things that I would like to see implemented in KSP, VR is right at the very bottom of the "I don't give a single damn about this" category (as a comparison, adding microwaveable water pistols for Kerbals would be in the same category). As said above, there are so many things to add/improve in KSP before worrying about VR. Please make a fluid, stable, complete and more realistic game before adding features that I know I will never use.
