  1. In the first sentence they say "flights of tourists to near-earth orbit", but the rest of the text describes it as suborbital. Which one is it?
  2. No need to throw it away, let’s say that all 3 boosters are landed back at the launch site.
  3. Found this render. Does this configuration make any sense? Is there a mission that would benefit from this? I doubt that droneship landing for Super Heavy will be a thing, so let’s assume that all 3 boosters RTLS.
  4. Soviet posters about space. Look at these ships
  5. I think it was 15 cm of snow overnight.
  6. Yes, I was originally asking about the efficiency advantage of full flow, not fuel consumption. Obviously, nothing gets dumped overboard in both cases.
  7. Makes sense now. Thanks Ok I read about it a bit more, and it turns out that full gasification of fuel components in full flow scheme leads to more complete combustion in the c. chamber, which increases the specific impulse by 10-20s compared to regular single-preburner staged combustion scheme. So it is indeed more efficient.
  8. No that’s open cycle. I’m talking about closed cycle, with preburner gas being sent to combustion chamber.
  9. Still don’t quite understand why regular staged combustion closed cycle scheme (like in RD-180) is inherently less efficient than full flow staged combustion. Good article, though. Great for showing to people who don’t know a thing about rocket engines.
  10. Something's happening there, or about to happen
  11. Today we had a 150-year record snowfall.
  12. Few know that Musk's full name is Elonislav Muskovsky
  13. His wealth grows faster than he can spend it, even with yearly billion grant for BO.
  14. I WAS RIGHT, they are different rockets!
  15. Of course, this somebody shoud be the organization whose spacecraft have holes, whose many satellites are exploring the depths of Pacific ocean, and whose rockets are generally uncompetitive. Telling that Musk's engines are unimpressive. The irony.
  16. They also called Musk “not a technical specialist” and appreciated “first successes” of SpaceX in rocket engine building. Imagine being so out of touch.
  17. But he said “build”, any sane person would parse that as “the cost of making the entire rocket from ground up, incl. engines”. I don’t know how 38 Raptors + SS hull can be cheaper than 10 M1D + aluminum hull, but it seems that’s what he meant.
  18. You mean the path as in "development from Falcon 1 all the way to Block 5"?
  19. Yeah, that does sound implausible. I think he's pushing the boundaries of known economy here.
  20. Just seems strange that they'd rename it so quickly. Maybe it has different upper stages. Hard to tell without paywall access.
  21. It may be another rocket, not a rename.
  22. Well, that's the billion ruble question. Very difficult to answer, because Russian space industry is comprised of many different organizations in very different financial situations. It clearly won't continue as it does today, because the venerable Proton heavy rocket has been retired, and no new ones will be built after the current contracts are fulfilled. This gap is supposed to be filled with Angara-5M and later -5V, and, to a degree, with Soyuz-5. Both of these rockets will need launchpads in Vostochny, and they're also required for the super-heavy super-kerbal Moon rocket, currently scheduled to fly in 2028. So that's the general roadmap. The closest rocket to launch is Soyuz-5, it's basically a Zenit with new engines; the first of these engines was reportedly completed today. So, will it fly? I think it will. Will Angara-5 and Soyuz-5 be competitive on the international launch market? I highly doubt that. But there's going to be a big and tasty local market for them, mostly government and military orders. GLONASS, spy sats, ASATs, inspectors, Sfera, maybe OneWeb, etc. I don't think Roscosmos will have as many launches as US or China, but I expect around 20-25 per year. As for inefficiency and corruption, well, the new boss seems to have stirred things up a bit. The corporation appears to have a net profit in 2018 for the first time. Really, we'll just have to wait and see.
