  1. When you convert every physics problem you possibly can into a system with rockets before solving because you have a better intuitive feel for how rockets work.
  2. 518 km/s, if fired from the right angle at the right time, is enough to escape the galaxy. Even if galactic prograde happened to be solar retrograde, you'd lose about 80 km/s (10 to orbit Earth, 10 to escape Earth, 30 to cancel orbital velocity, 30 to reverse it) and you'd still have 120 km/s to spare.
  3. Dry copper has amazing antimicrobial properties-- Because cell membranes have an electric charge, conductive copper can tear apart their membranes and DNA, killing almost all bacteria within minutes of contact. Copper was used in ancient times for surgical equipment, and up to the 20th century, but after the advent of the vaccine it's powerful medicinal properties were largely forgotten.
  4. A hug to @ZooNamedGames for making this thread! What a good way to express gratitude.
  5. Granted, but it so deeply challenges your understanding of life that you never venture on the internet again. I wish for a clear, written guide with illustrations for solving each of the following twisty puzzles: X-Cube, 3x3x4, 3x3x9, Square-1, 3x4x5.
  6. Look what you made me look up: https://www.google.com/search?q=pool+noodle+in+lava&espv=2&biw=1170&bih=804&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjojsW-9czQAhWBx4MKHd4gCa4Q_AUICSgC&dpr=1 Aaand, looks like nobody's ever thrown a pool party in a volcano. That's simply unacceptable, Internet.
  7. The V2 burned alcohol and LOX and had a pretty decend Isp. I'm sure this will turn into another one of those "my weapon is bigger" strings.
  8. Hey, it was a valuable contribution to the spirit of the conversation. Thus, it is worthy of letting the author know such.
  9. I tried to make a bearing the other day, but instead I made an unstable Kraken drive that lasted ten seconds.
  10. Would taking a screenshot be sufficient?
  11. There'd probably be some supplies on the ship, but maybe the Hermes is kept in a higher orbit because of its very low thrust and the Oberth effect making it hard to get into a circular low orbit. That combination would justify a larger rocket.
  12. (correct me if I'm wrong) The Hermes would've been in LEO and fueled prior to crew launch, so all that's necessary is to get the crew to orbit and docked. A Delta 4 Heavy would be plenty for the job.
  13. Beautifully written! I love the style, you make a sunset at the beach into so much more using only your words!
  14. Yes, then wide landers and healthy fuel budgets are your friend.
  15. ...is instead of being simply a third of the length of a Star Destroyer, is actually a third of a Star Destroyer. The game is played in the hangar. This battery factory...
  16. Speaking of the continent in general, not the nation on it. The continents are all cool and unique and ancient, what we do on them doesn't change that. You can say what you want about the country. Uluru: Plus the oldest fossils on the planet:
  17. Hey, at least Australia has some cool rocks.
  18. Moar heat shields, moar parachutes. In a vacuum, wider landers are very good.
  19. I think they come as often as people ask for them...use the "Submit a question" button at the bottom of the page to...well, submit a question.
  20. We can discuss ways to prove Earth's shape and size, such as looking through binoculars at the horizon at different altitudes, or measuring shadows at different latitudes if you have friends far away. Or we can talk about what would happen to physics if Earth was a flat disk. The atmosphere would clump together into a spheroid around the center, among other interesting things. Also, theorized toroidal planets, which could be stable but extremely difficult to form naturally.
  21. My first Rubik's cube solve was 9 years ago as of yesterday. Only next year and it'll be a whole decade! It's still only been 224 days since The Future started, though. Some people may have to look back at that date using a 669 sol calendar when it's been a decade, and they'll have to figure out how to celebrate yearly holidays on different planets.
  22. 5/10 because I might be dreaming. Forum games, what a dull thing to dream about. I'm going to Tatooine. *poof* My favorite food is iron, I build up my shell I MEAN PHONE with it.
  23. I think Elon Musk wants to send an ITS there. Not sure when, though.
  24. I got Goat Simulator: Waste of Space recently because it was on sale, top-notch space goat simulation at its finest.
