Welcome to the elite group of office chair rocket scientists. There is much to love in KSP, your journey has only just begun.

Give it a few more days, guys. There is a team working hard on getting a new server set up for the mod repository and CKAN links/metadata updated, and mod authors have to get the opportunity to upload their mods to the new server. Some mod authors may not even know yet something happened. It can't all be done in a blink of an eye. A few days of inconvenience and we'll be back in business.
-
Mods that have had close to a month to gain popularity will generally obscure new entris from perhaps lesser known authors, which then get not noticed so much and remain 'unpopular' never reaching enough numbers to be highlighted. I agree though that I am not sure if a weekly popular would really help this. Maybe more something like a 'New Entries' that just lists new mods uploaded the last week, without a popularity count?

Thank you Squad for an official statement on this event. I appreciated that KasperVld had already voiced most of this on personal title, but I think more than one of us was hoping to see a 'more official' reaction, and this statement on the official announcements does the job for me. The way things transpired left no room for more than a eulogy, which is unfortunate; that's water under the bridge now, and I want to look forward and see how things develop from this point on. Two lessons learned: As mod users, and as Squad: let's try better to not take the amazing volunteer efforts of mod makers and hosters for granted. I am still unhappy that I never saw this coming until it was already too late. And thank you for overall restoring my confidence in this community, your voices of support in this event largely overwhelmed the negative ones as far as I'm concerned. As mod authors and hosters: if you feel yourself running into a corner, please, please voice it before you hit that wall. Not just as a side remark in some thread that a lot of us could miss if we happen to not stroll along it, but feel free to post a statement on a front page or in a new thread. Give us a chance to see it and react. I think you might be pleasently surprised by the reactions, enough to ignore those that can't seem to do but complain. And thank you for the silent time and effort that you keep pouring into the mods and services we use and enjoy.

I would suggest doing it the other way around: copy the Steam download to another directory, and then run it from there and leave the Steam one as the clean backup. It doesn't need to be in the Steam file structure to run.

View from Mun on "load career" main menu

If the menu was actually hovering there, it wouldn't be fake... -
Well, you asked: I blame you. So there.

Well poo, I came to be entertained with some crazy stories, and was disappointed by completely accurate and factual data. Pfff. Since no one else seems to be daring: I think this is proof that Kerbals made it to the moon before we did, and probably have been responsible for at least part of the UFOs reported in the past century! Their space program, by the date of 1969, was already advanced enough to have interplanetary mining equipment, as uncovered in these top secret documents. These documents also show their use of atmospheric and submarine craft, which undoubtedly have been used to observe us humans here on Earth. And here is the kicker: Squad nefariously already knew about it back then!! Not only that, but they have been keeping it a secret, and still today try to hide this knowledge from us (just click on them, the actual documents were deleted!!!). They are among us, I tell you. And Squad knows!!

I go through all of them. Sometimes I am in the pilot seat myself, or I am the probe core AI, because I like to fly or drive myself. Sometimes, I can totally visualize Jeb or Val having the time of their life scaring the wits out of Bob. Yet other times I feel much more like Mission Control, giving/sending instructions and seeing them carried out from afar. And then there's the times I am more the Builder/Engineer, not doing any of those things and feeling completely detached from any type of control, but sitting in front of a row of monitors and watching how the Kerbals treat my 'baby'. I am not sure why it's different from one time to the next. I don't really want to rationalize it either. I enjoy all of them, thoroughly, and wouldn't want to be limited to just one type of experience. KSP is awesome.

I don't have any ties to the Nexus other than as a user, but my experience with it has been good. I already rely on it for mods for other games I enjoy. I for one would welcome it if the Nexus became another place, alongside what we already have, that we can rely on as a mod repository for KSP. More choice is good, especially if it's more places with a stable and sustainable infrastructure. I have not found out why the KSP space on the Nexus never really took off; maybe the success of KerbalStuff and the existence of an official site like Curseforge were partly to 'blame' for that, but I've not seen anything in either terms of service or ways of handling things on the Nexus that seemed to be incompatible with how the KSP modding community works. I keep hoping to see the Nexus KSP corner populating. At the same time I recognize that it's one more bit of work/maintenance on the workload of a mod author, so I will hope, but I won't ask for it. Thank you for taking notice and reaching out, @SirSalami. If I may ask a few questions: The KSP mod community is very keen on using explicit licenses to communicate the mod author's wishes on the use and (re)distribution of their work. I know the Nexus asks mod authors to add some words to a description page on the same matter, but it seems much more free-form. Is there anything inherent to the Nexus ToS that would somehow impede KSP mods to continue to use specific licenses, and such licenses to be respected? I guess a question to both you and your peer @Jadedcat for Curse: is there anything that would prevent both Nexus and Curseforge to exist side by side, both being available as an option for mod authors to host their work? I am not asking for contractual particulars, just in general whether you see any obstacles to a peaceful coexistence. My third question is actually already partially answered... whether the Nexus could work together with CKAN. Even if NMM were to be adapted to support KSP directly, with the momentum and userbase CKAN already has, it's to be expected that it would continue to be relied upon by a significant part of the userbase. Letting them interface would likely be an important part of making this cooperation viable. I don't so much see the Nexus as a replacement for the official source, but as another community offer. Right now KSP is very under-represented on the site, but the Nexus is very much a community driven service, and hopefully our needs and their offer are compatible.

Air Speed Record Challenge (No Cheats)

You forgot the exclamation mark. -
It's a matter of principle, @Yemo. The ambiguity that you think exists in the current situation is only there because you start from the assumption that 'of course most people would want this'. Whereas me, no matter how good I think my stuff is (mod, service, product, opinion, whatever) or how many people might agree with me, I will never presume that what I have to offer is wanted and liked by even one single other person on this entire planet, let alone 'the majority' or 'everyone', until and when that one other person actively expresses this out of their own free will or action. I actually do agree with you that I personally 'want this' in the context of SpaceDock and CKAN, and even that there is clearly a significant number of other people besides you and me that 'want this', but that still does not now nor ever warrant us as a group deciding that 'therefore, everyone wants this, by default, until expressed otherwise'. 'No means no', as well-intentioned as it may sound and appear, is one step too late: it should be 'Only yes means yes; otherwise always assume no'. Doing otherwise will inevitably result in situations where we infringe on someone else's freedom of choice and free will. I saw that @inigma already clearly stated it will be an opt in system. I am satisfied with that, even if that means I as a mod user have a little less convenience. No further words from me on this issue, let the thread go back to be about how to get SpaceDock up and running, please.

Like I stated before: I like CKAN and I promote it freely. From a mod user perspective (which I am), it provides a way of centralizing mod information and access. Out of principle however, and even to the detriment of my own user experience, I have to stand squarely by the mod authors in protection of their right to be the ones to decide when and IF their mods are to be listed in CKAN. Please do not be the next ones to try and argue that an opt out 'respects everyone's wishes' or is there 'for everyone's benefit'; this has been done many times before now and I'm tired of that discussion. There are sound reasons of workflow for some mods to not be included for broad distribution until the mod author explicitly decides it's the right time, as RoverDude already clarified. There is also the matter of having a small measure of control over what versions mod authors get badgered about, distracting them from legitimate issues or upgrades. Even ignoring all that, being given the right to do something according to the letter of a chosen license does not imply that we get to demand or impose it, which is what this comes down to. Do not squander the goodwill of volunteers - there are precious few of them with the will, capability and drive to create and support good mods (or services, like KS). If there is any ambiguity or mess in the current system, then I not so humbly suggest that the current system is flawed. We should not be making it the mod author's problem to find out after the fact that one of their mods has been 'integrated' into something they did not explicitly choose for. If the current system somehow makes it difficult or complicated to 'check that box after the initial upload', then the upload/update method is in the wrong, and that is what needs to be corrected. We have enough commercial and governmental services out there that constantly try to enforce or slip by us things without our explicit consent; let's not make a community service, which to exist and survive depends on the goodwill of volunteers freely providing their time and ideas, part of that trend. Please. I like CKAN, I want CKAN, and I wish all mods could be found and installed through it. But not at the expense of a mod author's wishes. I am pretty sure a lot of people would very loudly complain if SQUAD were to make things so that the only way we can download a mod from SpaceDock or any other community alternative, would be to first visit Curse and tick an opt-out that only then gives us the option to use SpaceDock or some other place. Please let's give mod authors the same courtesy that we as mod users are implicitly asking for (bordering on demanding really) when we implement an alternative mod repository like KS/SpaceDock - to have the freedom of choice of not using a service, no matter how good it seems to others or how big the group is that advocates for it.

Can we quote you on this?!? Oh wait, I just did... (retreats to the barn to sharpen the pitchfork for T-30 days...)

I have used, still use, and will continue to use AIRBRAKES instead of or additional to fins in my craft designs, so yes, there are others doing this. I think what perhaps is being overlooked by more than one in this thread is that airbrakes can be used as more than just a pure brake (ie. by hitting the brake key/actiongroup to fully deploy): it's off by default but by rightclicking the part one can allow them to react to control inputs, where they will work reactively with just enough deflection to act as control surfaces. Depending on the design, they act in this role quite well, in my experience. Well, yes, you are. And a bit touchy. But hey, so am I. But this is here nor there on the subject of how to build things in KSP. Let your creativity rule. KSP allows a lot of things work that people will very agitatedly tell you 'cannot work', 'should not work', 'does not look right', or (here it comes) 'is cheating'. I for one tend to take such statements as challenges, and the more vigorously stated, the more reason to try and include it in a working design.

KerbalX.com - Craft & Mission Sharing
swjr-swis replied to katateochi's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I'm seeing the same thing as the Chrome screenshot in Firefox, seems 2-3 pixels are axed on the left side. -
Not a modder either and I use/like/promote CKAN, but out of principle I vote for the integration options to be opt in rather than opt out. Allow the mod authors the liberty of choosing voluntarily which of their mods is to be 'integrated' or not. Recognize the fact that there is still a good number of authors out there that for whatever reason (and this is their prerogative!) prefer not to work with CKAN just yet, or at all. Let's please keep as much goodwill and cooperation as we can, all around.

KerbalX.com - Craft & Mission Sharing
swjr-swis replied to katateochi's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Well, now it's showing ok for me too, so not sure what happened there. Using Firefox 44.0.2 at the moment, although I'm on the hunt for something else, forced by dumbwit decisions by the current FF dev team (ie. imposing their view of how browsing should work on everyone rather than allowing knowledgeable users the options to opt out and/or customize their own experience). Wise decision, got my support. It's a busy week ahead, but I'll try find some bandwidth to go through a few test cases. Do you have a priority list of mods you want checked first? -
KerbalX.com - Craft & Mission Sharing
swjr-swis replied to katateochi's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I knew it! My trust in Kerbal engineering has been restored. Repeat after me: It is ok to not have 99.999% uptime. Seriously. It's ok. Maintenance moments are necessary in every server environment, and we're not talking about a critical service here (but I need to upload my craft rite nao!!!!). Just give a head's up on the front page, or even here in the thread, and run the stuff that needs heavy processing during those windows. I did notice, in fact I did a double take on a few craft because it seemed like the the thumbnail was 'not right'... actually now it is right and it was distorted before. Another thing I noticed, not sure if entirely intended: the two placeholder thumbnails are now squashed into the top half of the thumbnail space. -
Or life actually arrived on that asteroid. Jeb's ancestors riding the ultimate interplanetary transfer vehicle... yeeehaw!

In some. What I see though is a lot of thanks and support expressed towards @SirCmpwn, even if belatedly, and the community banding together to try find a solution. I'd counter that it brings out the best in people (and we can argue on the sideline on the ratios ).
