  1. Welp... I just found out that a sustained flight at 1684 m/sec *will* eventually blow up a precooler. It takes a while. Best, -Slashy Grats! Edging up on it - I suspect someone will manage the magic 1700 in level flight. You could get it dropping in on a suborbital arc, but that feels cheaty for something that's supposed to be an airplane, somehow. Besides which, I feel like if bits blow off I'm not doing it right, and dropping from an SO shot, I'd lose bits.
  2. To do a science career in RSS and manage a kerballed landing and return at Mars. I should get started on that.
  3. Mine got hot, but I never blew one. Which makes me suspect they're buggy. Additional edit: Though playing with it, there's a very very thin line combining speed, altitude and constantly-adjusted attitude of the plane that allows a precooler to survive at (and reach) 1690 m/s. So maybe they're OK? Someone smart figure this out, please. Thanks.
  4. And because everything in my world requires a video: Val's Mach 5.6 Vacation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgjxSut7T_c
  5. Oh, this I have to do. There we go - 218 m/s. Not terribly fast. But it did go both directions. Much better, I can start the New Year with Mach 1 on the runway (365 m/s), but no return. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLmW8m_uTqs&feature=youtu.be
  6. Gojira, Absolutely outstanding!! And that's an actual *airplane* !! O_o My hat is off to you! -Slashy It's a precooler, it's just clipped back into the cockpit so it doesn't stick out and look silly.
  7. Right, that's as fast as I can go. Val actually survived and landed after doing 1690 m/s and lost nothing off the x-2 - Precoolers seem to be very heat resistant.
  8. Hmm. just tried a tiny 1 rapier, heatshield, intercooler combo standard takeoff from the strip. Seemed to hit a wall at 1485 m/s that I couldn't beat. That heatshield is certainly ... blunt. Yeah, a little faster with no heat shield but still stopped at 1577m/s - interestingly the precooler didn't blow up. May have had to do with the cubic octagonal strut I accidentally left on there, which also failed to melt.
  9. The Brutus 356 Passengers: 352 Tonnage: 242 Crew: 4 Parts: 86 Another fine product of Careless Air. It handles as well as can be expected. It just hates stopping and is a bit heavy for the runway. (Link is back)
  10. That works, you just have to scratch the "Jeb" out on the badge and pencil in "Bill"
  11. I could make something - I'd want it to be small and understated and not be about replacing Eve Rocks. Let me see what I can come up with.
  12. Hola. The Eve Rocks Challenge is, sadly, no more. Here's a "just for fun" yardstick for 1.05 - fly a crewed mission to Eve, bring the crew home. No Interstellar/near future mods, and you do have to fly it, so no Hyperedit (you'll note I managed to disqualify myself thanks to an OBS glitch - thankfully I had Hyperedit handy from testing lander prototypes). Hop out, plant a flag, get back in and go home. Really, though, this is just for fun and before Porkjet's new inflatable heat shield arrives and makes this so much easier. I assume. It may not? Anyway, wow us all with your awesome designs for Eve landers. I went for "over-engineered to the brink of disaster" mode. So my normal method. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1528MDIGBU As per request, badges below if you like. To get one, post an image or video showing your mission from launch to return. It'll be on the honor system - if you feel like you've earned it, grab a badge.
  13. Of course it's not "cheating" - to start with you're not being graded, nor is KSP a rigid ideology with a Holy Book of Maneuver Orders, so it's not even a sin.
  14. Flannel long underwear and socks. And a new quadcore I bought for myself. So a good Christmas!
  15. Merry Christmas indeed - this seems like a good place to put this:
  16. Sounds good. Will continue to engineer madness, then (the whole mission depends on heatshields (and yeah I want Porkjet's inflato-shield so badly right now) and aerocapture). Thanks Foxster!
  17. Or is it? Before I go any deeper down the rabbit-hole of designing a kerballed land-there-and-back, I'm reading a lot of conflicting views on whether it's do-able in 1.05. Thoughts?
  18. When you find yourself right-click dragging to try to spin the camera in a YouTube video. I do that a lot.
  19. They got the last money off me for Episode I. Since then, and forever more, nothing. You only get to #$%@ in my corn flakes like that once.
  20. Huh, not that far from Starhawk. *waves*
  21. That was amazing - they recovered an actual orbital booster in a powered landing in a real launch ... holy ^#$%$. Elon Musk wins.
  22. I'm not very hidden. My mug is on my YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLiLJTCdBZCGUJ9CZS4bG6Q
  23. You will never know how many tries this took. And I even included more than a few of them. Behold: Kristmas on the Mun: (Also there may be a bit of F12 fuel cheatiness after orbit - the lag was so bad the refuelling mission was scrapped. You'll see why.)
  24. Well, I wasn't expecting the dry run to make it, so I'm missing a takeoff pic - the following was a run at building an SSTO that could carry the 42-ton STS challenge probe/refuelling package into orbit. It turns out the first messy design managed to do it and land back at KSC - on the grass a bit, I admit. Even did the "orbit has to be within 100 m on ap/pe" limit from that challenge. All stock, 12 rapiers. http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/645503094100813208/9BBD75874489C766BF6041AE290A3A502526CE27/ http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/645503094100814298/931D2C38F86F3482A93358203E5BCED5877C86F4/ http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/645503094100815538/DDA420567D3886074C09EDD78DFA6F440B56E4AD/ http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/645503094100811695/EAE61B41FE9DF31ADE8CB4ACFFCDA745629C2B58/ http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/645503094100817656/FF2C5FD18B5A5BEE9D1C50E0CD0CDB81F130FCBD/ http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/645503094100818589/608C7BDF7CE1ECF6AEE70234BA5BD85D984C3E6C/ http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/645503094100820108/E77C0367F68108B898468025DC35E661A1C41884/ Craft file: http://www.filedropper.com/mule-1
