  1. I heard about this! GJ 273b is a really cool planet, I was surprised that no one is talking about it a lot, same with GJ 3323b
  2. @NSEP Oooooh, I've actually been meaning to watch them, but I forgot about it guess I should get on it. Thanks for the links.
  3. Bad news about using the James Webb Are there other telescopes that could do this? What about the ELT? Or something similar? Or do we not have any telescopes that could give us more info?
  4. Also, interesting to note, if we (for the sake of argument) had an Orion class starship, we could get to this system in ~108-110 years by flyby, double for a capture/orbit. If we had starshot, same thing, only no slowdown. But if we used it to go to 0.15c, that would be a ~72.6 year trip, and at 0.2c which is what they want, it would take ~54.5 years to arrive. Add on to an (Unlikely) leave time by 2030, which is what I remembered last(?), that's Ross 128b by 2084, or 2094 if we leave in 2040. Annnnd tack on another 11 years for the signal to arrive, so between 2095 to 2105 we could have pictures from this system. Hypothetically, of course. It's just something fun to think about while I'm bored.
  5. That makes 6 systems within 15 light years to have possible Earthlike planets I hope JWST can take a look-see
  6. Oh yes, I'm hopeful for Tau Ceti too, it has a lot of resemblance to our inner solar system. But Ross 128 b is probably one of our best bets for life, up there with TRAPPIST-1, I think due to the nature of the star.
  7. I know, I know, I've been inactive lately (but I do stalk here from time to time). Anyway, I woke up to some pretty great news! Ross 128 has a planet!! First up, a while back, Ross 128 emitted signals (not alien), and here's the link to that http://www.space.com/37579-weird-radio-signal-ross-128-star-satellite.html I also believe there's a forum thread somewhere? But into the star! Ross 128 is a pretty calm star, with about 15% of the mass, and 20% of the radius of the Sun. It also has a much lower luminosity, meaning the habitable zone is very close in. The planet in question has an approximate mass of 1.4x the Earth, and a possible radius of 1.2x the Earth, but until we get a direct observation, or transit, we don't know for certain. Due to it's orbit of 9.9 days, and light flux of 1.47, it's not very certain how habitable is could be. Recent reports said an Teq of between -60c and 20c, with PHL putting it at 6.85c. It also has an ESI (Earth similarly index) of .86. At just under 11 light years away, it's the 2nd nearest potentially habitable planet after Proxima, and likely the most promising. 8. Hey everyone. Sorry I'm not as active these days. Hoping to change that sometime.

Anyway, I'm doing the official NaNoWriMo, and I've finished almost 2.1k words on my superhero novel xD Pretty good start I'd say.
    Anyway, what's up?

  9. Hmm

I've finished season 2 of Stranger things today.

    It was great xD

  10. Hey guys! I recently posted a status that I finished the first chapter of a superhero novel (Why do I take on so many projects), for NaNoWriMo next month. Bear in mind, at least the first half of the chapter needs work, but considering that this was written yesterday and finished today, I think it's pretty good. Anyway, tell me what you think In the early 2020s, a biotech company seeks out 4 people to test their new technology on. Yuuto, a teenaged vigilante, Reese, a gifted athlete, Tyrone, a hard working student, and Nolan, a science major. The 4 of them are brought to the company, and given unique abilities, with Yuuto leading them. But after a failed mission which ended with civilians getting killed, Yuuto must get the team properly trained after he finds out about a plot that could kill hundreds. (Will be subject to getting altered in the future) Superhero's are cool
  11. Hey guys it's that time once again for a I'm not dead post.

I've finished the loose outline and character bios for my superhero novel that I'll be doing in November.

It's called The Shadowmasters, and as a start, I also finished the 1st chapter, would you guys like to see it? Very early version though, some of it needs to be expanded.

  12. Ahh, I made a mistake, meant overall. But still awesome!
  13. I hope the delays for SpaceX were from increased prioritization on BFR, and not a problem with the capsule.
  14. I voted yes, it will have a positive outcome. The technology developed can be reused here. If people are worried about jobs, colonizing a freaking planet should do more than suffice. We'd need more educated people, but I think it would have a positive feedback loop, and science/math would be focused on more, just like during the Apollo era. It could force us to look back on ourselves, and fully realize how small and fragile we really are. Many space missions did that, but the sheer scale of planetary colonization could help even more people care about other people, and Earth more. We have a lot to work on and develop. On top of that, this has never been attempted before, and I will honestly be surprised if there aren't any accidents or deaths in the early days. It won't be easy, there will be slipbacks, possibly many. But we will do it. Hopefully in the next decade or so, it'll begin. Let the era of space go forth
  15. It'd be cool PR too. And could give investors more faith in them so they get mo' You know, now that I think about it, since the BFR is supposed to be lighter than their regular rockets, and the Rapter is more powerful/efficient, could the payload mass of the Falcon 9 (maybe heavy) increase at all?
  16. I think it has something to do with Nate Ninja'd by @tater
  17. I think that would be a great idea, and it'd allow them to test new systems, including using a Raptor in vacuum which could give them a bunch of data for Mars missions as they build the full scaled version.
  18. A little short story I just wrote -- May expand it some in the future :)

    Where's the spoiler thingy?

    Anyway:

    October 11th, 2078

It was a chilly night. Tarique shivered slightly as a small breeze brushed over the bare of his neck. He turned a corner, and walked down the lamp brightened street alongside a massive building complex. He pulled up his keycard, and went inside the sprawling lobby where dozens of scientists worked.

Almost forty years before, when humans were still figuring out crewed interplanetary travel, a team of scientists figured out how to cheat interstellar travel. Unfortunately, they required a portal around the destination first; something they couldn’t do without decades in space. So they sent out radio beacons all over hoping one was lucky enough to stumble on a technological civilization.

Tarique walked by a couple of them, nodding politely, and walked to the elevators that led to the machine. He pressed a button, and dropped down deep underground.

When he got to the bottom, a couple scientists stood up and left after him, leaving him with his coworker, and the machine – It was almost five meters across, and powered by a nearby nuclear fusion plant. The portal was always on, in case someone built its pair. He walked over to his small desk, and began working. Taking notes, doing observations, and glancing at the energy field of the portal every so often.

He mostly read books during his shifts, sometimes, he, and others would feel a jolt of excitement whenever the energy field spiked over the last few months, but alas, the feeling had worn off.

“Anything happen while I was gone?” he asked his coworker, Jackson, who was reading a dog-eared copy of some old sci-fi book.

He shook his head, keeping his eyes on his book, “Nah, there was a brief spike, but it only lasted a second,” he replied.

“Ah, alright,” said Tarique, leaning back into his chair and picking up a book. “How’s your daughter?”

“She’s fine, oh, she really liked the present you gave her last Friday,” he added. “Hasn’t stopped playing with it,” he said, grinning.

“Great, glad she’s feeling better after that surgery,” he said, taking out the bookmark.

“Yep, really sucks she had to be in a wheelchair for her birthday.” He said, slightly awkwardly. The two fell silent and focused on their books.

Almost an hour passed, before the computers beeped. “Oh, just another spike,” Jackson said. Tarique looked up, there were three spikes of energy.

He was about to go back to his book when another spike of energy shot up, but didn’t go back down. He looked over at the portal, it didn’t seem any different. Jackson put his book down, and looked at his screen. A few seconds later, the alarm started blaring, for the first time since the portal was opened.

The portal didn’t look different, but as scientists started clamoring down the elevator, it glowed even brighter than it ever had before. He felt his breath catch, and watched apprehensively, waiting for something to happen.

A moment later, something inside started moving, Tarique couldn’t tell if it was real, or his mind playing tricks, but whichever one it was didn’t matter as a tall figure stepped through the barrier.

His eyes widened, and his heart started beating furiously. He tried talking, but the words wouldn’t come.

The alien was tall, clearing at least a foot above him. It looked around, and stepped forward, its feet were big, and its arms were long. It moved slowly, and was thin, but still looked like it could easily pick someone up.

Tarique and a couple others stepped forward, slightly tripping over themselves in the process. “Hello,” he said in a low, raspy voice. The alien looked at him, and Tarique was about to speak again, in case it didn’t hear him, but the alien opened its mouth instead.

“Hello,” it said, almost clearly, “We received transmissions from you a long time ago. When we finally finished it, we were worried you weren’t around anymore. I was the first to volunteer to come through.” Everyone simply looked at the alien in shock, oblivious to the still blaring alarm.

    What do you think?
