  1. Holy Kraken Krap. The official damage totals for Hurricane Harvey are in, and it's mind blowing: $198.6 BILLION. That's almost twice the cost of Hurricane Katrina and puts Harvey as the second most destructive natural disaster in human history, second only to the 2011 Japanese Tsunami and Earthquake.

The heat is both the solution and the problem! It will roast us to a crisp, but it will also keep you from getting burned by the sun!

If only it rained diamonds like it does on Uranus.

Not to mention the water ocean 500 miles beneath the cloud tops on Uranus and the polar hexagon on Saturn.

  3. The research update I promised is going to be postponed for a few days. There has been significant development going on, with a NEW multi-planet system being investigated and a study that finally sheds light onto the binary system EPIC 220194953-74. Right now I'm also setting up a so-called "Working Group" of over 2,000 different stars from K2 Campaign 7, including all red dwarfs from that campaign. Holy Kraken, my computer is going to hate me.

  4. I'm going to be posting a new research update this weekend. It will comprise of TWENTY new candidates from my analyses over Columbus Day Weekend - at least 13 of which orbit already known K2 confirmed or likely planetary systems. One of them is potentially habitable. In addition, I will report on new updates for old systems, including EPIC 211428897, EPIC 220194953-220194974, and more.

  5. Is there anyone with really good Scatterer experience that can help me out? I'm trying to get Scatterer ocean effects for Iona (EPIC 212525618 b), Eve, Kerbin, and Laythe, atmospheric effects for Iona, Eve, Duna, Kerbin, Laythe, and Jool. and sun flare effects for Kerbol and EPIC 212525618. However, no effects would load, and my game began acting very weird. Half of Iona was lit by its star while the other half was illuminated by Kerbol. Then, out of the blue, the game started lagging VERY bad and I had to force-quit it. Anyone know how to fix this? (Send me a PM if you can help)

In other news, I just found out that India and Vietnam are likely to get hit with Category 5 super typhoons next week. Damn.

Would help you, but I have little time. Why did I decide to take APUSH...

As for the typhoon, it's remarkable that people out there continue to deny that climate change is occuring and is at large caused by greenhouse gases being spewed into the atmosphere by humans.

I'd like climate change deniers to explain to me how Venus has a higher temperature than Mercury despite being further away from the Sun...

  6. 55 Cancri e (Janssen) has a rather thick atmosphere, with a surface pressure of 1.4 bars - equivalent to 1.38 Earth atmospheres. This rules out any models of this thing being a volatile-rich planet, as it would likely have a much thicker atmosphere.

  7. Does anyone remember my really old mod, the Othrys Planet Pack? If you don't...that's expected. I stopped working on it nearly 2 years ago. However, I've been recently considering a redo of the mod, which I would start after IA-Revived 1.3, Upsilon Kandromedae*, and the Exoplanet Explorers pack are released or almost finished. Here are the features that I will likely be implementing:

-All the new planets will orbit around a white dwarf called Othrys.

-The original planet Othrys will be renamed Othrys Prime.

-Almost all the objects and ideas from the original mod will be transferred over.

    -Several life-supporting planets and moons.

    -Possibly a distant red dwarf.

*The first version of UK is 99% finished. Just have to wrap a few things up before release.

For topography, I generally use VertexPlanet if I want to go very detailed, or VertexHeightNoise if I just want to give it a little bit of detail.

Also, I found that HeightColorMap doesn't always do the job, I end up changing the textures generated to create the look and feel that I want.

@EricL @UranianBlue I'll try out those techniques where I continue retexturing for IA-Revived 1.3. Depending on how they turn out I may use one method or the other for future projects, including the OPP.

Meanwhile, the eye of Hurricane Maria has rebuilt itself and the storm's overall organization has significantly improved. This means one thing: it's going to intensify again.

  12. Okay, some updates:

-I won't be able to get to IA-Revived for a while, but I do have some textures for ProtoJeb's Planets, which I'll rename the Exoplanet Explorers Pack.

-The next Daily Roundup will include the new findings about EPIC 210693462, Kepler-90, and Kepler-20. I've been doing quite a lot of data analysis this past week which may result in new discoveries to be reported.

-Along with data analysis, I'm also very busy with keeping up on the latest tropical updates. I'm also a rather big meteorology nerd, so this stuff has merited 75% of my free attention these past few weeks. However, with storms like Irma and Maria, it's quite frightening sometimes.

  14. Updates on EPIC 210693462 are going to be pushed back, because something interesting has been found regarding Kepler-90. Plus I still need the data for the reveal.

  15. Remember how, after the discovery of EPIC 210693462b (Natalie), the K2 scientists running Exoplanet Explorers said they would use the Keck in late summer to observe the star?

They did, and the results were released on Sunday. However, I'm not going to post them yet, because I have to do an analysis of the given data. It turns out Natalie may be an even more bizarre planet, and I need to pin down certain parameters for...reasons that I will not reveal yet. It's a surprise!

@Cabbink You probably know what I'm talking about, so PLEASE don't spoil it to anyone!

@StupidAndy, why is the measurement a unit of Elon Musks? I honestly feel bad for the guy, basing his career on KSP . . . SpaceX would be really successful if he could get the rockets off of the launch pad. Sadly, like the Soviet N1 Rocket, SpaceX probably won't reach the moon.

These storms keep getting worse. When are the republicans going to flip on climate-change?

Never. If they do it will be when the apocalypse has arrived and it's too late.

  21. I've started my planet searching again with the new LcViewer update! And I have some cool finds to report in a few days...

For 2000 points... I'm guessing it has something to do with...PLANETS!

Do you search for your planets using the transit or radial velocity method?

Also, which stars do you plan on looking for planets around?

    4. ProtoJeb21

I use the transit method, because my work is with data from the K2 mission. LcViewer is used to analyze processed K2 light curves and study individual signals.

      Science fiction story idea?

Either, it was an alien thing gone wrong, or...

We see the final days of hundreds of alien species before they're all wiped out.

Because let's face it, there's probably not anything alive there anymore, probably in a few million light year radiud at leastm

  22. Good news for my exoplanet searches! A new LcViewer update is coming out soon, which includes an automatic signal search feature. One of the other LcViewer users on Exoplanet Explorers, shutcheon, was able to test it out with EPIC 220221272. The application found the first five most likely candidates in under 20 seconds. For comparison, it took three months of human analysis to find them. Currently candidates with a 4-sigma confidence, like the sixth planet of EPIC 220221272, would remain undetected, but this quick analysis feature would enable me and other users to find candidates at a much faster rate than before.

Wow! That will help a lot!

do you think that this update could improve exoplanet searches with larger telescopes, like Kepler and maybe even the future telescope TESS?

      What! Only 20 seconds?!
