Will youtubers and such get the game earlier?
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to SpottyList35's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
I do not believe that. The level of grousing on these forums is negligible and I've seen very little elsewhere. OTOH - most seem happy to finally have a date to have any access, early or otherwise. So... The Content Creator group can do EA with the rest of us, post their early impressions in an attempt to make profits and if you want - you can wait for them before deciding whether to part with fitty. Or... You can be like me and buy it day one. -

Years ago I told my kids that zombies lived in the sewers (we had a large drain on the street we used to live on). Purpose was to keep them from messing around and falling in - and it was way before Pennywise. My son (who was 4) asked if the zombies could ever get out. I told him that they came out after midnight on Halloween (misperceptions of Dia de los Muertos played into this) and would grab kids who were out too late. My kids are teens now. They joke about how mean I was. However... Every Halloween... They're both inside before midnight!

KSP1 Computer Building/Buying Megathread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Leonov's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Dear gawd... You are in trouble! I'm running a 1k watt PSU - because several years ago I killed a good Mobo, CPU and GPU combo by trying to run an old, underpowered PSU. That was an expensive oversight on my upgrade cycle. At least when I bought my Corsair PSU it was affordable. I'm determined to always have overhead in the power spectrum. ... Interesting what you write about the monitor. I had a nice 16:10 1080p HP IPS 24" (60hz) that I liked - but the only thing that bothered me was being able to see the individual pixels. I was determined to upgrade it - but it took years for the industry to build what I wanted. At 32 inches - I figured that 4k would have the pixel density to overcome my complaints, and I wanted to up from 60hz to something faster. They did not come out in anything resembling affordable until the 32 inch 4k 144hz Gigabytes hit the street. I've really enjoyed it. I did not want anything bigger than a 32 given my space and what I'm comfortable with. 1440p at 32 would be the same pixel density problem I had with the 24 and a 24" 4k was a waste. I hesitate to suggest anyone spend the kind of money needed for the upgrade - but if you like the form factor of a 32 inch monitor... You will love the image quality of having 4k! (only problem? You really do need a GPU from the current or last generation =/ https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/best/4k-144hz -
KSP1 Computer Building/Buying Megathread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Leonov's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I think you misread me. WOT, as a 2010 game, is not demanding - even at 4k... so my 970 would give me playable frames on my 4k monitor. Maybe require some graphics tweaks - but, yeah, some of the good legacy cards are still - for most purposes - good (presuming legacy content or 1080p/60hz). The unlinked subtext is something I wrote way back when the 3000 series was coming out; you don't need a new card if all you play at is 1080p / 60hz. Truth is, until you start trying to push 144(+) on a 1440p or 4k monitor, you really don't need all the new cards. Aside from a very very few things like certain shaders or ray tracing content - that wasn't available back when the cards were made, or even very common / necessary today; the legacy cards fulfill just about everything you might ask of pushing content to a 1080p / 60hz monitor. There are a very few cases where having a card that can push 200 frames to a 60hz monitor will reduce perceived lag, and some people want that, but it's not necessary for general gaming. The context is this: some titles come out with the express purpose of pushing tech to the limits and practically demanding enthusiasts (not general gamers) to buy the newest wowest card. Most titles, however, are written with the broad range of current gaming machines in mind as they go to work, if not being written entirely with Consoles in mind - so they're not really going to need the gamer to get a 4000 or 3000 series card for the player to enjoy the title. So - again... depending upon the monitor you currently have (or plan to use) - if it is a 1080p resolution monitor and is rated for 60hz... your 1080 card should handle a game like KSP2 coming out in February 2023. If you are stepping up your monitor, demanding higher resolution or faster frames, then you might want to consider a newer card. 2000 series cards are fine for 1440 and can handle some 4k content. 3000 series cards are great at 1440 and good for 4k. 4000 series cards are the freaking cat's meow and make 4k really nice... but are a COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY if you have a 1080p / 60hz monitor. Alles klar? -

The older cards like 970 and 1080 were certainly competitive, but I'd hesitate to recommend either for 4k. Here's an old review of the 3070, which compares performance of various titles and cards at different resolutions. https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/asus-geforce-rtx-3070-noctua-oc-review,11.html Does that mean you can't? No. But you might find it disappointing to try playing a range of titles at 4k with a legacy card. My 'player experience' with a 3070 pushing 4k 144hz is that it's entry level. Playing competitive games, I would not want anything less. Could my old 970 handle WOT on the 4k? Sure. YRMV -
Does KSP2 need Kerbal classes and experience?
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Pthigrivi's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
I took a very long break from KSP - right up to the original KSP2 announcement, when I decided to play the game again to get ready for 2. Started a sandbox iteration and very quickly realized that wasn't what I wanted to do - the career mode was more fun for me, and I started again. I had no idea how much I had forgotten. First time I got a craft to orbit, I was frustrated to not be able to get a maneuver node. Had to google why. (people forget when and how you learned what you know). Turned out to be a very minor inconvenience. What took me a lot of failures to accomplish the first time I played through took almost no time at all that go-round. (I hadn't forgotten how to build a ship or the fundamentals of the game - just details like when / how to unlock some of the progressive elements.) My point was that when you start a new game, with the progression system reset to '0', you as the player are without some of the things you are used to having... But the game is role playing the Kerbals haven't developed that yet. That's certainly a far cry from being a tutorial. It's the mode. -

Does KSP2 need Kerbal classes and experience?
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Pthigrivi's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
That's the difference between Career /Science mode and Sandbox, isn't it? Experienced KSP players have no reason to limit themselves to a progression system - unless they choose to (once the full version is released). As it stands - we should all get a full featured (albeit limited) sandbox to start with - and I've seen no indication that we'd have to unlock anything to progress at all during the EA. -
The thing about how you would have to repeat experiments at places - like a temp check at the pad - for reduced science output could be handled (in my Kerbilopedia example, above) by a 'confidence' number. First time: you get say 67% confidence. Meaning you 'get 67%' of the 'science points' - which is reflected in the KPedia via the 'confidence number'. Once you've done all the tests, the 'confidence number' reads in the 99% range. Tells the player they've gotten all the science points they're likely to get from that. The really cool thing - from the "Using KSP to inspire the next wave of Space Scientists" is that it could give them an idea of what's out there, and why. i.e. you might have a very small temp range at the surface and very different readings at certain altitudes, which could build a chart like this: Thus, as the player goes and builds upon their Kerbil's knowledge... very subtly they'd be learning about our own solar system and how stuff works. Again... that would have to become a 'game within the game' - but incorporating it would make KSP absolutely next level. DLC? Would buy.

The possibility of revamped science is entirely behind my hope /wish for an auto-updating 'Kerbilopedia'. My thought was that the game would incorporate a Kerbilopedia of the places the player knew about and visited. With each science experiment, or landing in a new place, the respective page would update. Examples: Player performs a Temperature check at the pad at KSC. The page about the KSC updates with information about the temperature range. Player discovers and lands in a new biome, say 'Kerbin's Desert, does a temperature check, a barometric pressure check and performs a crew report. Each of these gets added to the sub page for Kerbin, Biomes, Desert - with some informative text. Player takes a sample on the Mun. Again, this is displayed on the Mun's particular page with some kind of 'data' made up by the writers of KSP2 Of course, this is highly unlikely to materialize, as it is effectively a 'game within the game' and would be a whole 'thing' that the developers would have to build and incorporate. ...but it would be kewl!

KSP1 Computer Building/Buying Megathread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Leonov's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Need to talk about your resolutions. Presumably you are using 60hz 1080p... So yeah, for most things a 1080ti and 32 GB RAM should be fine. You may have to turn down a graphic setting or two - but at 1080p, legacy cards are fine. If, on the other hand you are trying to display on a 1440 or 4k... Maybe /nope. I don't know enough about your processor to say whether it's sufficient - nor do we have any info on how the CPU handles high part counts. ... FWIW I was running a 970 just fine until I decided to up my game to 4k/144hz. 3070 is entry level for that. -

Not hype... But a question: I think it was confirmed, but, do we know whether parts can be connected to more than 2 others? Or are we still doing lots of struts? -

The 'streamers' (aka 'Crater Rays') was a big deal after the Dart impact. Check this out, from Mars: Before and after, taken by Mars Recon Orbiter. Presumed to be the cause of the marsquake detection by InSight last December. https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/27/world/mars-nasa-meteoroid-impacts-scn/index.html The article doesn't mention the interesting pattern made by the ejecta - but it does note big (boulder sized) chunks of ice were scattered about - noteworthy b/c of how close it is to the equatorial region. See also this 2018 report on 'crater rays' referencing Tycho, among otjers: https://www.astronomy.com/news/2018/08/crater-rays
