What is the most sucessful mission you've ever done?
Ultimate Steve replied to Virdin's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Well, there certainly was more than a bit F9... But I was doing a KSP speedrun a few weeks ago and it came time for my Jool-5 mission. I had tested none of this beforehand, and the launch vehicle ended up having no fairing with the Laythe lander just strapped to the side, causing instability, but it made it to orbit, and all of the landers did their job perfectly. The only real hiccup was running out of EVA fuel over Pol, necessitating several quickloads, but other than that... Vall was no loads, Bop might have been no loads, Tylo was way fewer loads than Tylo has any right to be, and Laythe only used one load, and even then it was not actually necessary. And the entire mission, from construction to landing on Kerbin, took less than two hours. -

You know, it still is probably possible that they will try to land crew dragons on Mr. Steven or something else, if it falls slow enough the boat could maneuver to get right under it. Of course I'm probably underestimating how much of a challenge this is, but they could. -
Project Intrepid (Chapter 61 - The Sirens Of Moho)
Ultimate Steve replied to Ultimate Steve's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Chapter 48 - A Liftoff, a Landing, and a Short Drive through a Radioactive Wasteland Two things. One, I'm going to be going on a two week long trip to Europe in a few days, so no new chapters for at least three weeks, unfortunately. Two, we're at seven chapters on this page of the forum, not good for the whole image loading lag thing (or maybe it's just me and my bad internet, who knows!). Good news is that we're 7 posts away from the next page, so feel free to comment or ask anything or something (even if it's a 3 word "wow" or something). In addition, I'll say a few things about the actual gameplay. I'm still on 1.3.1. There's a bug where upon exiting time warp your vessel will be thrown into the air really fast, on Eve this means several meters into the air. It was annoying when using the rover, losing several dozen meters of hill climbing after each charge. Fortunately, the Eve lander survives the fall without breaking but slides further downhill with each load. The ESREP is doing fine, however, the wheels absorb the (very rough) impact. Another weird thing I noticed is that the ascent vehicle continues to slide slowly downhill. Once during the gameplay for this chapter it slid into the Roverplane and both of the vessels exploded violently. Needless to say, I hope to update to 1.4.4 pretty soon. -
Video went down. Not looking good. And, sure enough:

I'm having trouble just making it a story! Last post was over 2 months ago. I'm working on another Intrepid chapter right now, and then I have a big trip coming up, but I'll do my best to make Ch. 15 a priority when I get back. But I do agree, if done correctly this would make a pretty good movie, not to brag or anything.

In the middle of a conversation, I'd guess just ask? "Hey, is there a chance I could get your snapchat?" At least over here (I don't have a phone so I'm left out) it seems like everyone has everyone's snapchats. It's almost public, although things might be very different over there. The worst that could happen in this situation isn't really that bad (you're leaving soon I gather) so you should feel more inclined to take a chance.

PICA-X I believe. And the descent looks gentle, but I'd guess it's not as gentle as it looks, those things are deceptively huge. The parachutes were mounted off-center which would cushion a water landing, but a land landing like that would damage at least that corner significantly. -

Antique Rocket Challenge
Ultimate Steve replied to Ultimate Steve's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Hmm, this is going to be harder than I thought to get a good score. KerbalX and Curse only go back so far. The really old forum posts had the DL links in the attachments, and that's not a thing anymore. Most of the 0.18 era crafts were lost in the Great April Derp. And then there was the Mediafire purge... Edit: I have yet to find a single working forum DL link. It doesn't help that none of the forum links really work at all that far back. -
Realtime Career Mode Speedrun
Ultimate Steve replied to Cunjo Carl's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Ahh, so there's the secret! I usually try to keep Jool as equatorial as possible, I'll try that the next time I do this! Okay! Also, I recently did some experimenting. It's hard to get the money exploit to work right off the bat, so after the Mun or Minmus is probably the right time to do it. I also attempted to use the admin building for infinite science, but the reputation setup cost is too high to make it practical. Actually, that's already been done! Two things though, you don't have to correct it right away, but I ended up not using KER or the DLC, just the game and a list of transfer windows I wrote down.- 23 replies

So, the idea for this challenge came to me from two things... One, I was watching some old Top Gear, and two, someone just necroed a thread from 2014 saying that the DL link was dead. So... Commence the Antique Rocket Challenge! The goal of this challenge is fairly simple. You must take craft files from old versions of KSP, stick them in 1.3 or 1.4, and go to as many places as possible with those craft. No modifications are allowed to the crafts (2 exceptions, see below), but orbital construction is allowed. Scoring is a bit complex. For each version number, there is a point value. For each celestial body, there is a multiplier for orbiting and returning, and landing and returning. You average the point value for each craft you used for the mission, and multiply it by the body multiplier. For each body that you visit (you may, of course, launch multiple missions, this doesn't have to be a grand tour thing, you can launch separate stuff to each world) you have a point value now, and then you add them together to get your final score. Version Point Values (includes all .x versions): 1.4: -100 1.3: -50 1.2: -20 1.1: 0 1.0: 5 0.90: 10 0.25: 15 0.24: 20 0.23: 25 0.22: 30 0.21: 40 0.20: 50 0.19: 65 0.18: 80 0.17: 100 0.16: 150 0.15: 250 0.14 and before: 350 Subassemblies follow the same rules, although they were only implemented in 0.22. The addition and subtraction of subassemblies are the ONLY modifications allowed to craft (besides draining oxidizer from tanks for old NERVA powered craft). Planetary Multipliers (land with a Kerbal and return him/her to Kerbin): Moho: 5x Eve: 15x Gilly: 1.5x Mun: 1x Minmus: 1x Duna: 2.5x Ike: 2x Dres: 3x Laythe: 7x Vall: 3x Tylo: 5x Bop: 2.5x Pol: 2x Eeloo: 3x Scoring example: Say I went to Dres with a craft assembled in orbit with 3 ships, a core from 0.18, a lander from 0.24, and a launch vehicle from 0.19 carrying a reentry ship from 1.0. That's 80, 20, 65, and 5, so 170. 170/4 is 42.5. The Dres multiplier is 3, so 3*42.5 is 127.5. If I had also gone to Gilly with a different ship and gotten 35 points there, my total score on the leaderboard would be 162.5 (Dres+Gilly). You'll notice some of the versions have negative points, this is to de-incentivise anything recent, while still allowing it in case you really need a reentry vehicle. If I went to Eve with a craft from 1.4, my Eve score would be -1500. Not good. The spirit of the challenge: The aim is to find the oldest crafts possible (most likely not your own, look around the forum and old sites!) that still work and have fun making them work. The scoring system is probably unbalanced but decent, don't just go for maximizing points. Another "spirit" thing is seeing how designs have changed over time. Things to watch out for/rules/tips: Craft from before 1.0 will not have heat shields, so be careful! Craft from before 1.0 will also not have been built with aerodynamics as a feature, most likely. I'm not sure if there was a reformatting of the craft file system at one point, some old craft may not work at all. Don't use the old Mk3 parts, they will not load. Mods are allowed, as long as they aren't OP, but good luck getting an 0.18 parts mod working in 1.4. Your entry will be denoted as a modded entry. Information and visual mods (but not autopilots) are allowed. At one point the small reaction wheel was 1.25m. At one point, NERVAS used oxidizer. I will allow draining oxidizer from tanks. Be wary of old DL links from suspicious sites. Old parts will load into the game with their updated models and textures, this will lead to weirdness as well as potential gaps. You must play in 1.3.x or 1.4.x. If you still have old versions of the game, you *may* design your own craft, but it is discouraged. The idea behind this challenge is to use other craft. Please provide a source for each craft you use. Places to find old craft include the spacecraft exchange subforum, old YouTube videos, old Reddit posts, the Shareables section on curse, and KerbalX. KerbalX and Curse both have filter by version functions, those are probably going to be very useful! No debug menu, HyperEdit, config editing, persistence editing, etc. Basically just use common sense and be a good person. No spamming tiny 0.18 craft to boost your score. Every craft must have something to do with the mission. Leaderboard: *crickets so far* And lastly, have fun!

15 ton payload SSTO: Titan hunter mk5
Ultimate Steve replied to Roflcopterkklol's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I'm guessing the answer is probably not, seeing as the author of this post has not visited the forums since 2015, and the thread was made in 2014. The craft may not even work with the current version of KSP. Welcome to the forums, though, I hope you enjoy your stay! If you're still looking for SSTOs that work in the current version, you should find many throughout the spacecraft exchange section of the forums, or on KerbalX.com. You'll find that craft design has come a long way since 2014. -
The movie based on Stephen King's book "IT," but the old one, not the new one.

Today I finally managed to get my telescope out while the moon wasn't obstructed. And wow, I need to *properly* clean the optics, but the level of detail I was able to discern on the moon was incredible. I was able to get it so far in that I couldn't even see an edge! I was then going to point it at Jupiter but then the bugs started attacking me. I also learned that I need to get one of those moon filter things, my right eye still feels a bit off.

I got bored and decided to start a Mega Hard Career, meaning everything is on the hardest setting - reentry heat at 1.2, resource abundance at 0.10, no respawn, plasma blackout, 0 starting funds, -1000 rep, 10% science rewards, 10x funds penalties, etc. The one thing I'm allowing myself is revert and quickload. A guy tried this a while ago, and found it pretty much impossible. However, world first awards have been added since then, making it doable. I managed to make it suborbital. The one thing I'll note is that Kerbal G tolerance is at 0.01, but it's not a strict multiplier. They black out really easily at around 3.5g. Meaning whenever I have a high acceleration stage, whenever I reenter, and whenever a parachute fully deploys. It probably won't get anywhere (mainly because of the science nerf) but it's been an interesting experience.

I'm keeping most of my business in 1.3.1, and I'm keeping realism overhaul stuff in 1.2.2. However, I have a few experimental 1.4.x installs to test mods and mess around with the new chutes. I'm planning on migrating my installs to 1.4 once mods are updated.

Ultimate Steve replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Ya, there would need to be some modifications. Shouldn't be too difficult. If 300kg is still too heavy, you could custom make one to be way lighter. The early Hindenburg flights carried a custom 162kg grand piano, the first piano to be carried on a passenger aircraft. -

I'd love to see (in the medium term when mass isn't as much of a problem) a BFS (or anything, really) with a permanent grand piano in front of the window. -

If we can put 12 men on the moon with a bajillion times less processing power then the machine you're reading this on, then we can figure out how to play a violin in space. -

The Ultimate Jool 5 Challenge Continued
Ultimate Steve replied to JacobJHC's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Alright, here is my speedrun playlist: The Jool-5 mission construction phase starts at 19:30 in Part 2. The launch happens at 23:35 in Part 2, and the recovery happens at 17:55 in Part 3, so watching it at normal speed (1.5x is doable and you can still hear the commentary clearly) would take less than 30 minutes (wow that's actually a long time) which means from entering the VAB to vessel recovery took me less than 2 hours in real time.
