what was the lowest Dv margin you haved for a flight?
EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to omelaw's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I see what you did there. Anyways the lowest dv margin I had on a space mission was pretty much the same as @Majorjim!, except that I ran out of fuel more around 10m above the surface. Impact blew up two of my four landing legs as well as my descent engine. Luckily nothing on the ascent stage blew. I've had some aircraft that I've had to glide back to the KSC, and only barely made it. -
Equipment for Kerbals.
EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to SvenBorg's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I know about the mods, I just think that kerbals should have personal parachutes (and maybe even ejection seats) in stock.- 10 replies

Equipment for Kerbals.
EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to SvenBorg's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
This already is sort of a thing. Press "L" while on EVA and lights on the helmet will light up wherever your Kerbal is looking. I can definitely second these other things, especially the parachute, as it would be nice to be able to bail out of a plane if when things go pear shaped.- 10 replies

a Kerbal Suggestion- Seasons
EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to KSPFanatic102's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
It has been deemed impossible, but I believe I know a workaround. The axial tilt relative to the orbit of the planet is impossible correct? Then all that is needed is for Kerbin not to orbit the sun, but rather to orbit another point that is orbiting the sun. This point could be called "Kerbin Orbit" or just not show up in the map view, and Kerbin would orbit it at an imperceptibly low altitude (0.01m or something0 (or if possible, Kerbin would orbit it at 0m/s) and at the inclination of the desired axial tilt. The SOI of the point would be so tiny that it is inside the core of Kerbin, so nobody would ever encounter it, only Kerbin's SOI. Same workaround could work for other planets. And also didn't (doesn't) one of the planet mods have axial tilt on one/more of its planets? If so Squad just needs to do whatever that mod does (maybe even hire that modder?) -
The Rover Race Challenge
EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to Adelaar's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Yah a limit or something would probably be a good idea. Otherwise this could just become a contest of who has the best computer (and can thus handle the parts necessary to create a larger land train than the other person) lol Anyways I made a new (more legitimate) run for the standard race, and made 2:55 = 175 seconds. No parts broken so that's 175pts. I believe that puts me in second place. -
You kind of forgot all of the spaceplane cockpits. Anyways, fixing the hatch on the Mk2 cockpit isn't as easy as it sounds. It would probably require a redo of most of the pod. If you take a look at the inside there's a kerbal sitting right where the hatch would be moved to line it up. I'll go take a look at the internal view again but as I recall there's not much of another place for the kerbal to be moved without his/her head being stuck inside something. The inside would have to be completely redone, and that sounds like a lot of work for what amounts to (imho) a minor inconvenience

The Rover Race Challenge
EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to Adelaar's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Ok so I was working on a minimum weight speedster to beat @Hesp's standard race entry time, but I kept spinning out and thus missing his time by like 10 seconds. I then took a different approach. To be honest I feel like the rules should probably be changed, or things like this should be put in some separate "gatecrashers" category, because this is kind of ridiculous. It gives me 4:36 = 276sec 276 - 5(67) + 5 = -54pts! -
That portable station expansion kit looks neat! How hard is it to get the sections aligned so they form a full ring? They all look pretty cool though.

Could you post a screenshot of this settings menu you're talking about? I get the feeling you're in a different settings menu -
The Rover Race Challenge
EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to Adelaar's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Ok, I re-ran the course with an upgraded and tuned Rotax, and shaved my time down to 3:14 = 194seconds. I didn't break anything* so that means I got 194pts Pics here. Once again my entry is for the "Whacky Racers" section -
@Vaporized Steel A while back NathanKell made a post dealing with reentry heating in KSP. If you don't want to read that (and I wouldn't blame you haha), then this is the important bit I'm guessing that "bottom-first" = belly-first, because it would be a bit... unstable and weird to fly a spaceplane backwards through reentry (but definitely Kerbal! )
-
Actually this is realistic once your craft is going past a certain speed. Blunt objects get to benefit from something called shockwave detachment (creating a bow shock). This is effectively caused by the air immediately in front of the nose not being able to get out of the way fast enough, and thus creating a sort of barrier between the nose and the supersonic/hypersonic airflow. This results in the shockwave (which is what we hear as a sonic boom) being moved forward, away from the nose. This greatly reduces the amount of heat which thee nose must endure. That being said, it does produce a rather significant amount of drag
-
What kind of re-entry profile are you using? To bleed off speed and reduce the peak heating on the nose (and in this case cockpit) of any spaceplane you'll want to be coming in with a significant angle if attack (just like the space shuttle did). I generally find 40° works great. You have to be careful to account for the lift this generates. Might wanna swerve from side to side to dissipate speed that way if you're coming in fast enough.

How many things do you use the wrong way?
EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to 322997am's topic in KSP1 Discussion
what about the itsy bitsy feather-light cubic struts? Anyways, I often use Communitron 16s and O-Stat solar panels as bearings in prop planes and helicopters (and more recently a car). I used the flat sides of mk3 fuselages to create a decently sized, tough, low part count aircraft carrier. I once used a fairing with a modification to the craft file to create a ship with negative mass... Unfortunately it didn't really do anything I once attached 2 biplanes to the control tower using KAS grappling hooks and watched them fly circles around it. Used airbrakes to keep cargo from shifting around in a plane. Used a claw to act as a hinged joint attaching the boom to a Stratotanker I created. I then used another claw to dock a thunderbird to it in flight. Used BDA cluster bombs in an attempt to create a pseudo Orion Drive. Used [REDACTED] and the preciously mentioned [REDACTED] to make a super-[REDACTED]. Used a KAS winch and struts to replace an entire 1/2 orange tank I had blown up on an IPV when I smacked into it with a tanker. The IPV later exploderized around Vall due to the insane buggyness of KMP. Used a panther in wet mode mounted on a truck as an incinerator to get rid of debris on the island runway on a DMP server. Used Vernors to keep a 750m clampless tower from falling over. Used large static solar panels as really inefficient wings ... That's all I can think of at the moment. -
The Rover Race Challenge
EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to Adelaar's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I need to perform a run with screenshots to make it official but I believe with some tune-ups I've made to my Rotax Racer and some improved driving skills I can hit 240sec. If I overhaul the Rotax to send power to the wheels as well I could probably shave even more off that. Edit: That is, if I could ever stop popping my tires when I leap off the ledge of the tracking station -
Carrier Landing Challenge
EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to Wjolcz's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Click on the icon in the lower right corner that looks like a gear with a wrench inside it. One of the things it displays is your craft's dimensions. Also: I could make my carrier larger with roughly linear scaling of part count, I just didn't really bother bcc I can land inside 100m, and in the situations I typically use it (dmp server) having more than one plane on deck is asking for bugs (like teleporting to the bottom of the sea and exploding) -

I did, I just am trying to figure out how to increase the size of the magazine and make the propulsion process more simple (EG: AG: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, repeat) Also wanna figure out how to make different size drives and reshape possibly -
Carrier Landing Challenge
EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to Wjolcz's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Well the entire idea of using Mk3 parts was to make it low part count. For example, I made a 100m x 8m carrier for only 198 parts. -

EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to Wjolcz's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
You could try using the Aeris-3A stock craft. I've landed it inside 55m before, so you could probably get a score of some sort on this. -

EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to Wjolcz's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I'm not the OP but I feel like a ban on airbrakes would be a bit arbitrary. Any drag producing device can technically qualify as an airbrake, including your control surfaces if deflected from the airstream. Heck, your whole plane can be an airbrake if it's angled right. -
In that case I will link numerous helicopters and planes Helicopters: https://kerbalx.com/EpicSpaceTroll139/Coax-Mk1 https://kerbalx.com/EpicSpaceTroll139/Heli-MKll-18-8 https://kerbalx.com/EpicSpaceTroll139/Titan-Mk1-2 Not Uploaded: SkyKrane Planes https://kerbalx.com/EpicSpaceTroll139/Electric-Speedster-Mk7 Also that one I showed earlier but didn't bother uploading

The Rover Race Challenge
EpicSpaceTroll139 replied to Adelaar's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Ok here's my entry for the Whacky Racer section. Presenting the Rotax Racer III-IV http://imgur.com/a/QmMCr I started out at 1:05:45 and finished at 1:10:05. So that means I took 10:05-5:45 = 4min 20sec = 260 sec to complete the course... I think I did that math right So that means 260 points. I hope I included all the pictures. My game seems to have a habit of not capturing screenshots like 1/4 times (I ended up having to take the second screenshot from a previous attempt, bcc it didn't capture it on my final one for some reason). I included the drive screenshots, the car, and bloopers from previous attempts.
