Spaceplane design advice

I agree, they are challenging because of what you said, design, payload etc... but my oh my are they oh so alluring.- 77 replies

SSTO 0.3 in 1.2 - On request
Leafbaron replied to WanderingKid's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
@Kerbal101 The reason I said 8 is because of your lolplane haha when I flew it as it was from the craft file I was able to land it just fine. but i don't disagree either. Anything over 6 tonnes is really outside their operating GVWR. -
Spaceplane design advice
Leafbaron replied to eagle92lightning's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Im getting bored with regular command modules/unmanned rockets and want to start using spaceplanes for things inside Kerbin's SOI...for now, the rest of the system soon. In my career mode I don't have the necessary technology to make an SSTO yet, so this is why I'm practicing with payload launched style planes (MSTO). Plus, returning an entire glider gives me more money back on return versus just a command module. PS Jeb looks thoroughly amused in that photo- 77 replies

SSTO 0.3 in 1.2 - On request
Leafbaron replied to WanderingKid's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
The LY01 and LY-05 landing gear was discussed extensively here. What it boils down to is that these landing gear cannot handle much more than 8 tonnes. -
Very nice looking plane! Very far distance to travel with sucha light craft, well Done! Wishing for updated mods? Thats a paddlin

Thank you! here's another rendition i made using parts from modular rocket system mod which gives 1.25m cargo bays. The wing design is more refined. You can see the rest of my post with this Glider here near the bottom.- 77 replies

The engine on the back is porkjets parts overhaul version of the terrier. Same stats just a cosmetic difference. The wings are constructed of 4 parts. Two swept wings clipped together, a small rectangular wing to fill in the gap between the aft part of the wing which is the long skinny tapered early tier wing surface.- 77 replies

Built this Space Glider with payload capabilities. Launched to a fly by with the mun. Released payload and got payload into orbit. Landed the spaceglider an ocean away from KSC right where I wanted to. I then proceeded to move the comsat into the retrograde orbit to satisfy the contract. All in all a very successful mission. I'm very inexperienced with Space Planes and thus have not figured out how to de-orbit them over KSC yet.

@Kerbal101 Your plane flies beautifully. I was able to land her in a Hilly part of The grasslands at less than 5 m/s vertical speed and around 75 m/s horizontal velocity. You can definitely lose 2 of the junos and the large MK1 fuel tank. id also suggest putting the solar panels outside the cargo bay. at 7.3 tones she isn't a problem for these wheels at all. just gotta take her in nice and easy. happy flying partner.

@Kerbal101 testing your Lolplane right now. Will let you know what I find and where weight reductions can be made. In the meantime, Here is the "short" range science getter i made last night. 6.3 tones. I was using the ly01 and LY-05 until i unlocked the next tier landing gear. It can go much faster than 81 ms as well haha

Is the fuel tank behind the Science Jr. a fuel tank or a structural fuselage? I can't imagine you would need so much fuel. with the Junos and the mk0 fuel tanks that should give quite a fair bit or range. I have landed the gear on rougher terrain such as the grasslands and shoreline around ksc. Have not tried to land on a mountain though.

@Kerbal101 My experience is in 1.2. I do not play with G-force part limits. so this may be why I am not experiencing what you are. Have you tried flying that plane with only 2 juno engines instead of 4? the extra weight may be causing your gear to explode. That plane should fly adequately with the reduced thrust. Made one very similiar to it last night that flew exceptionally well with only 2 juno engines.

My first 10-ish hours with Kerbal Space Program
Leafbaron replied to Dr Turtlestein's topic in KSP1 Discussion
be careful when doing this. If you thrust to much and you start to move away from the Mun, your craft will flip over to chase the retrograde marker. Not ideal when you're only meters off the surface -
Spaceplane design advice
Leafbaron replied to eagle92lightning's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Land it like a normal space plane. Since you will be gliding in and won't have jet engines you will need to be extra accurate when deorbiting if you plan to land at KSC or near KSC. If returning from a fly by from minmus or the mun you'll want to be very careful and aero brake a few times to bring your orbital velocity down before reentry. The Mk1 parts don't handle heat very well. Once you get through the atmosphere and are subsonic, control authority should return to normal. This is when the "porpoising" technique comes in. Glide level until your about to stall and then start a mild dive to gain velocity. then level out again. Repeat until you are close enough to land. You'll want your vertical speed to be about 5/ms or less at touch down. if your weight limit/part limit allows as well as CoM/CoL you might add one juno jet engine with the Mk0 fuel tank and small intake. this most likely won't give you enough thrust to fly, but will improve how well you "glide"- 77 replies

@NecroBones has the modeling on any of the parts changed from the photos on the first page of this thread? I'm going to get the mod regardless because it looks fantastic, I'm just curious and at work so I won't be able to download and see for myself for another 8 hours and well....I'm impatient like that lol. Thanks in advance. PS I also read somewhere this pack contains 1.25m cargo bays? -Leafy

Spaceplane design advice
Leafbaron replied to eagle92lightning's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I couldn't figure out how to upload my photos but when I do I'll post them. Tinkering around with my design last night I managed a 5 person glider with 1054 M/s of D-v not including monoprop. And she glides well very small glide slope. The rocket that launches her...well its not so pretty but it works. If only they would add 1.25m cargo bays, Found 1.25m cargo bay on modular rocket systems mod, this glider will be perfect for launching cube sats or small comnet sats.- 77 replies

It was April of 2013 and I found a video with what looked like a video game rocket on it. Clicked the video and low and behold it was one of Scott Manley's videos. Ive been playing on and off ever since.
