[video] Melee Attack ship - dual command pod capture
Vostok replied to katateochi's topic in KSP1 Discussion
And suddenly - the Russians were no longer friends with you, and strangely refused to rendezvous in orbit with your ships.... -
Looks very nice, there. If I were to make any suggestions I'd say that the clouds would follow the rotation of the planet. At the equator, you don't see the clouds overhead going past at around 1000 mph.... If you could find /draw out an animated cloudmap somewhere that would also make it look super-realistic. Apart from that though, awesome animation!

[UNOFFICIAL/FANMADE] 0.17 Discussion Thread 2

The mun arch is an object, much like the monolith or the VAB and the surreounding water towers and gantries. It is not part of the terrain. If squad were to make the terrain solely out of objects, it would be an enormous load on your PC, and completely impractical, as it would eliminate the procedural generation aspect of the terrain, and since unity loads every object on startup, the game would load every single terrain tile at the start of the game, meaning either that the terrain would all look the same, or the game would run about as fast as a backwards snail on glue, due to loading hundreds of different terrain tile objects all at once. -
I'd like to submit a request to name the crater that contains one of the monoliths on the Mun - Kubrick Crater (for obvious reasons) I have the locations here, and proof that I've landed there. WARNING: SUPER DUPER SPOILERS! LIKE REALLY BIG ONES. DON'T LOOK. SERIOUSLY. This one is another small crater, and it could likely be named without poll due to how small it is, but a poll should be necessary if anybody else suggests anything other names due to the contents of said crater. Unless they do, the crater is small enough to be named straight off. (It being important 'n' all...)

Short answer: No. You could possibly, with mods, do a russian style moon landing , but it would require two controllable pods on one ship, something that requires mods. But what you can't do is re-attach (solidly) a detached part back onto the parent ship. You could grab it with landing legs, but no timewarp would be possible. When docking comes along (a planned feature allowing multiple controllable pods on one ship assembly, and multiple ships attaching together whilst in orbit or landed) you should be able to easily complete an apollo style mission. In fact, I believe that when it is possible to do apollo style missions, the developers will consider docking basically implemented. (to be expanded upon later, of course).

This is how I'm mentally approaching the idea of FTL travel in the game. It could techincally be Slower than light travel, the game universe could have a light speed far greater than ours! (in fact, the light speed in game is infinite, since everything is likely rendered as it happens, regardless of distance. This means any speed is slower than light. Light speed is only a barrier in our universe, not this virtual one)

Does Jeb seem more scared in this release

You mean like this? -
These stations are all looking awesome! What mod is the space station parts you all seem to be using? Recently, I flew a crew transfer flight to my station, rendezvousing with it in it's daftly inclined orbit (I forgot to correct that before separating the engine) and exchanged the generic kerbal crew for Bill, Jeb and Bob. So now my station is crewed by the best of 'em!

That's one hella' bop. Hale bop? Hale-bopp? no? nothing? Loving the look of that tiny moonlet there, looks like it'll be fun to try and ramp off some of those hills into an escape trajectory... -
If what happened there happens again, you come in low with too much horizontal velocity, burn hard vertically upward, to give yourself more time to cancel your horizontal velocity. Just keep the ship pointed at the marker with the X on the nav-ball, and keep an eye on the speed. If you get real good, you can even land blind!

Space stations, what do we think? Do you make them at all? Do you use mods to put them into orbit? Do you build them in orbit with mods? Totally stock? Specialist parts? Suggestion: To get into the mood for this thread, simply play this video here. (this is not mandatory, but it's always good fun) Here's my first ever space station, it's totally stock and was launched into orbit in one go. My computer had it's sad-face on. So, do you have any awesome space stations? Let's see them!

I think there's one at around the top-right of the giant dark crater on the kerbin-facing side of the Mun, at about 1 O'clock. If anyone can provide me with an image from the map screen of a ship parked at a monolith on the Mun, I'd be very happy, however. Every single crater I've explored that I reckon it's in - nothing.

A while ago, Nova stated that he wanted the name to contain the three letters 'Des' somewhere. I suggested 'Lamedes' (romanesque pronunciation, Lam-ee-dees) or some spelling variations, which I recall NovaSilisko said he liked as a name for the mars-like planet. -
In my day we walked on the moon, and were happy with it! none of your fancy flying! In all seriousness, the EVApak is fine as it is, (except for the infuriating control system), but I do think the ability to sprint on planets with about the same gravity as kerbin should be added. Obviously a planet with a much greater grav. pull you'd not be able to sprint on, but a little more or a little less, I'd say you'd still be able to sprint, after a fashion.

If this happens again, change focus to the ship, and you can right-click to retract the landing gear (even with no crew in it!) which will stop it in its tracks. True story! (this is a glitch that allows right-click controls on engines, fuel tanks and the like without crew in a ship, or even on debris)
-
I think that's the pod used in the crew portraits, and in future, IVAs. But that said, I hope that some time down the line, in campaign, before eva-paks are invented, we can use that fire-extinguisher for EVA propellant and manoeuvring....

Looks good so far! You might want to use your artistic license to draw that left kerbals legs to blend better to his body, and give them both necks, since their heads look a little odd joining directly to their flight suit. Maybe some smoke and flames emitting from the two redundant boosters. Apart from that, awesome!

Oh god, I saw it by accident. I can't say it's the best movie I've ever watched...

I think two-ship missions will be a must-have until docking is added. Until then, it would not be feasible to launch a whole ship there, have it land, and return. The amount of lag on takeoff would bring most computers to their knees. Until docking, my missions would go: Build 2 ships capable of flying to orbit remote planet, each with a payload. Ship 1 payload: Lander, and orbit stage. Ship 2 payload: Passenger module, return-to-kerbin stage, parachute. Ship 1 lands, takes off, rendezvouses with ship 2, crew transfer, returns to kerbin. Celebrate success. After docking is added, it would be far simpler, in that it would go: Assemble, by means of multiple supply flights, big-ass station in kerbin orbit, with engines, tons of fuel, and a lander return stage. Fly station into kerbol orbit, rendezvous with target planet and orbit. Lander/return stage goes to surface, does science, returns to 'mothership-station'. Jettison lander stage, keeping the module that the lander crew are in. (could be achieved by a lander that has a pod, with a docking port on top, and a decoupler below, and the lander below that. Once it's back at the station, the lander can be ditched, keeping the pod and eliminating the need for an extra crew module) Return to kerbin, park in low orbit. Adjust ship to sub-orbital trajectory, detach all crewed modules (probably just one, maybe two) and re-enter atmosphere.

I made a rocket that flew to the moon (And back!) with the capsule pointing backwards (downwards) the whole way. It certainly made the nav-ball really fun to use, I'll say that much... Although this has little to do with backwards planes
-
But then their accusation would be: "You wasted all this money we hate you space people and we will not give you any money no more blargh" Which, to me, would seem like a bad thing. Let's just hope it works out well for the folks at NASA.

A while ago I posted 'Lamedes' (pronounced lah-mee-dees) or 'Lemades' as a possible name for the desert planet, which NovaSilisko said he liked. (http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/showthread.php/16088-Hey-where-are-the-devblogs/page2) However, I'd still doubt that this will be the name, as it's too early to say any names for definite at the moment. I doubt that NovaSilisko is in charge of the names, I more suspect they will be a group thing, agreed on by the whole dev-team. -
The green bit is just a plastic tube, for storing the parachute in flight. It has a small separation charge at the bottom under a small plate, which should force the parachute and command pod out of the top. Yeah, it's meant to be powered by my own mix... Eek! I should probably go and buy some model rocket motors in that case :S How would I tell what size of motor to use? I like the look of that Sky lofter, looks pretty nifty. How many times do you get to use the rockets? If you can reuse them indefinitely, I'd say that cost is pretty good. Although, if you're looking for awesome scale rockets, this place I hear does very good kits, far better than Estes scale rockets. http://www.klydemart.com/ Also, if you read through all the rocket descriptions, they're pretty funny. He also has a few videos of ants in the various model rockets he's made, with astronaut cameras, too!

I'm sure with a little work, some dubious rocket-placing, and a whole lotta luck, those awesome papercrafts could become awesome firewoo- *ahem* rockets! Nonetheless, those are awesome papercrafts - I think you got them from the same site as the shuttle I did. (I made mine to fly, with a minutely weighted nose. It ended up very battered :S) Very neat gluing and cutting there! Also, I've worked out a nose-cone system for the rocket. The rocket at launch The capsule segment, parachute goes inside green tube. The screw-on top for crew access. It's a hollow plaster-cast nose cone, designed (unintentionally) to shatter in the event of a ballistic landing. But hopefully a parachute will stop all that from happening. The little rim around the top will be sanded smooth eventually, to reduce drag. Soon it'll be stuck together, a parachute made, and painted in the timeless 'NASA Black-and-White' colour scheme. Then a quick trip to the cooking pot for some fuel and a sparkler, and then its 'light it and run' time!

I've had that impression from the beginning, that you've posted these images and then sit grinning behind your computer desk at the responses, like a man feeding piranhas with small bits of meat, and watching them swarm around for the tiniest bite.... That said, I love it that you post the images, since I (and probably everyone else in the community) really enjoy seeing the planets develop, and it's good that you engage in the community.
