My dream is to work on NASA will KSP help me?
razark replied to Daniel Nobre's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Honestly, this right here is your biggest hurdle to getting a job at NASA. You would need to become a US citizen to work directly for the agency. Your best course to working with NASA may be through the ESA. However, this does not prevent you from working for one of the many contractor companies. There may be certain areas closed to you due to being a foreign national (After all, the difference between a rocket and a missile is where the guidance system points it.), but there are quite a few non-US citizens working at various contractors. Contractors are where the real work is done, anyways. -

That covers a lot of jobs. Flight controllers in Mission Control, space suit designers, water chemists, propulsion engineers, computer programmers, electrical engineers, food preparation technicians, scuba divers, accountants, lawyers, secretaries, printers, model builders, mailmen, technical support, janitors, firemen, etc... There's 18,000+ people at Johnson Space Center, and all of them except for the astronauts are "The guy who is on earth making the travel possible to astronauts" in some way. -

Very much this. What do you want to do at NASA? There's all sorts of jobs available, in just about any field. KSP won't help you in about 99% of them. For those jobs that it would help with, it's not going to help very much, but for some jobs, every little bit can make the difference between you and another candidate. What you're going to want to focus on is your education, first of all. Take the challenging classes and do well in them. Learn to explain things in a clear and concise way. Whatever field you choose, learn how it relates to NASA's goals. Get some work experience in the field if at all possible, and once you get to college, keep an eye open for internship opportunities at NASA. And if you can't handle that, there's still hope for a NASA career. There's plenty of folks at NASA that ain't no rocket surgeons. Like the ones that call you to write an email over the phone for them. Or ask when the meeting was, so they can figure out what days they showed up for work. Or say "I tried to hide things from my management, but it didn't work. I'm being transferred on Friday." Or... *wanders off to sit in the corner muttering about 1130 days of testing and they still don't know what their system is capable of or even have a consistent policy on how to use it* I'm going to go have a drink now, for reasons completely unrelated to this conversation. -

Indeed. Your users are numerous, but here's only one of you. If Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan taught us nothing else, it taught us that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. -

I knew I had seen a system like that somewhere. Thanks for reminding me which game it was in. -
My father was with the Marines in Vietnam in 1965. Most of his stories involve guard duty, Spam sandwiches, communal latrines, and griping that the NSA had better gear than the Marines.

So, that means that we would only know if the heat shield were to overheat not during reentry. Which makes the situation somewhat even more terrifying.

I'm using DRE here, but thanks for letting me know, I guess.

I wouldn't say purely. I use it as a rough guide for alignment, so I can watch it out of the corner of my eye and not have to watch the number closely. It also helps visualize how the rest of the alignment will be affected during a roll maneuver. I find it easier to work with the visualization, instead of trying to think about the numbers. I only pay close attention to the number when I am just about to dock and finalizing my alignment.

I will warn anyone that wants it that I am not a web programmer. This really was my first experience with any extensive web/php/database work, which was part of the reason for doing it in the first place. @Freshmeat and @Li0n: Here it is. There is a very brief readme included. https://www.dropbox.com/s/21vo293693q0sre/kspweb.zip?dl=0 -

When I get home, I'll see what I can do about removing some of the cruft and packaging it up. It's php and mysql running on an old laptop, with absolutely no security or user friendliness built in. -

In addition to the mod, I use my own system to help keep track of things. Random numbers, plus rules on crew rotation, as well as flight assignment and position eligibility, promotions, and retirements all get tracked. I've been thinking about absorbing some of Final Frontier's awards into my system, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Thanks for sharing that story. I agree, this mod does help bring the otherwise rather generic characters to life. This is why I always try to rotate my crews. -

razark replied to Athlonic's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
There are several communications loops in the FCR, dedicated to certain areas. The only radio is from CAPCOM to the flight. I've rarely seen loops beyond CAPCOM and PAO in the wild.- 751 replies

I see. Thanks for the info. It both answers and doesn't answer my question. So there's achievements because Sony says there have to be. But still, why? I just don't get it. Is it some silly thing to hook players into spending more time on the games because of the psychological "must get another reward" effect? What does Sony get out of decreeing something to keep players playing the same game? I also don't get the draw for players to have achievements in a game. I don't see how it adds much of anything to it.
