Project Orion: A discussion of Science and Science Fiction
Shpaget replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The main purpose of the pusher plate is to tame the insane energies of even the smallest of nuclear explosions. Using chemical explosives, you can have as small of a boom as you like, so it would make much more sense to contain that small explosion inside a rocket nozzle a direct it in obe directio, but explosions are pulsing in nature which causes vibrations, so it's beneficial to have small booms at high frequency, which leads to conventional burning design we see today (these are not actually explosions, but rather deflagration) That being said, there is some research ongoing dealing with rotational detonation engine where there is an actual explosion going on continuously around an annular nozzle. Theoretically, this could be up to about 25% more efficient than deflagration. -
What If... Blood Fueled Rockets? I Am Not Joking...
Shpaget replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Laws of conservation of mass and energy are not laws in legal sense, where you can choose to break them. They are not suggestions, guidelines, proposals, nor are they optional. They are not prescriptive. They are descriptive. They are also ever-present. Why do you keep neglecting them? -
Wow, that was nerve wrecking.

For sure! We've never won against Brazil, so hoping for that to change. Brazil is excellent, but if Croatia plays as well as they did the first half against Canada, it's gonna be a fun match to watch.

A Superpower That Is Perhaps Not Overpowered But Incredibly Useful...
Shpaget replied to Spacescifi's topic in The Lounge
You're giving the entire population an arbitrary magical power because it sounds cool, and not because there is a plot driven need? Don't you think it should be the other way around? -

Thanks, but it's 2 tenths over 1,6''. Not rocket surgery level of dang good, but still dang good for a hobby machine. If I ever need a part that is both large and accurate I may need to outsource it, but that's the story with any machine you end up buying. There is always a limit. I'm yet to try milling steel. I've seen videos of others doing it and getting good results, so it seems possible, but it's a high speed spindle (24 000 rpm) so not really optimized for torque at lower rpms steel calls for. We'll see. In the meantime, I may have couple of projects lined up, so just maybe I might recoup a fraction of the cost of it. -

As some of you may or may not know, (pinging @Gargamel ), earlier in the year I got my little CNC milling machine kit, and I'm finally approaching the "done assembling this damn thing" phase. Along the way I had quite a few issues aligning everything; namely, the problem I had was that the axes (plural of axis) were not square. Finally, the other day I milled a mold for casting silicone (a gasket type thing for the tool setter, so the coolant doesn't get in) and yesterday I put it in the big boy mill we have at work to check the squareness. I'm happy to report that X and Y are within 0,005 mm over 40 mm, which is a whole lot better than 2 mm over 200 mm I started with. Dimensionally, I'm happy too, just 0,04 mm oversize, something a spring pass should take care of. There perhaps is just a little bit of room for better tramming, but since there is no mechanism to do it properly (it relies on smacking the thing with a hammer) I'm not too keen on doing more of that since I'm just as likely to just push it further out of tram. As for machining capabilities, it cuts aluminium just fine, as in when using 6 mm or smaller Chinese carbide end mills I'm limited by the tool, not the machine. I do get a bit of chatter on heavy cuts with 8 mm roughing mill, but the point is it actually mills as opposed to grinds the material like the usual desktop "milling machines" with a Dremel tool. Next up, I need to make a coolant distribution block. The single nozzle it currently has is not enough to properly wash away the chips and gets in the way anyway. Weekend project, I hope. -
I'm in the process of making a coolant distribution block for my little cnc mill and dealing with pipe threads. For example, I need what is called BSPP 1/4 inch thread, but you'll never guess how big it actually is. It is 0,518 inch. Yup, half an inch, and then some. Also, it uses 19 TPI thread pitch, so the fairly standard 20 TPI thread mill I have is useless. Oh, it's also 55° instead of some sane number like 60°. Then there are parallel and tapered threads. but apparently it's ok-ish to use parallel male in tapered female thread. What a mess. That Withworth guy should have been flogged for even suggesting such nonsense.

A bit of an update on this front. A Texas judge ruled that the people killed in the two Boeing 737 Max crashes are "crime victims" *, which potentially opens a new can of worms for Boeing. https://edition.cnn.com/2022/10/22/business/boeing-737-max-crime-victims/index.html *not that the crashes themselves are crimes, but that crimes (negligence and similar regarding procedures, system safety and redundancy) have led to the crashes.

Those certainly exist. Just the first result on google for me: Candy CSWS485TWMCE -
I'll borrow this phrase. Anyway, seems like natural causes can wipe out galaxies. Well, I hope it's natural, because the alternative is terrifying.

In that case why bother with heart configuration at all? Have all blood vessels in the body restrict in a propagating wave. -
Worldbuilding Consequences Of a Faster Heartbeat
Shpaget replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Heart, human or otherwise, is not designed for any particular function or mode of operation. Evolution does not work with a goal in mind. It just happens, and if it works better than the previous version, it tends to stick around. -

If you have torchip tech, you don't need heatshield. Just slow down until your structure can take it. -
