  1. @pedorsf: Sorry, just one entry per person - you've got to choose
  2. Well, the CRUEL does need another stage to get to Duna. Also Duna is just a very forgiving target, because you can land very fuel efficient with parachutes and gravity is rather weak after landing. However, any Lander that can easily land on Tylo or Lythe could just as easily be abused as a actual Spaceship. The CRUEL was more or less designed as a final stage for a Duna Direct ascent mission. That doesn't revoke it's lander status....
  3. Well, after quite some fiddling around, I present you my entry: Crew: 3 Part count: 101 dv: 4100 m/s vac Main Engine: 6x LV-909 Weight: 42.52 t Liquid Fuel: 2520 units Monopropellant: 300 units Power source: Single RTG I added some frills this time, but I'm fine with it, since my two-stage lander was really bare-bones. The CRUEL can land and get to orbit again on basically any body execpt Kerbin, Tylo and Eve. Laythe is possible from a low orbit, but very tedious because of the relatively low TWR. But lets get to the positives: The CRUEL is outfitted with a full array of sciency gizmos, that can be used to do science. With 2520 units of liquid fuel, it has a lot of capacity and six very efficient engines. The CRUEL can descend to Duna, ascend again and return to Kerbin without the need to redock. It has four Parachutes that can be used on any body with an atmosphere and a fully functional RCS-System that might look all over the place, but is actually very well balanced. It has four landing lights that will illuminate the landing site at night and a single docking light, made for docking in the dark. The radially mounted engines allow a very compact design - it almost looks like a pyramid, a Rockomax Brand Decoupler can be attached to the flat bottom. This way the CRUEL can be attached to any rocket without the need for a engine fairing. I love that in the end, it does look a little like the 1963 artist conception. Action Groups: 01: Toggle ladder. 02: Toggle satellite dish. 03: Toggle landing lights. 04: Toggle docking lights. Get CRUEL over HERE!
  4. Nope, two stages are fine - just make it heavy We allready had a contest for a normal two-staged lander
  5. @briansun1: Well, I was rather vague with the requirements. But please make sure, that you honestly think your design can count as a "heavy lander" - everything else is lack of sportsmanship in my eyes.
  6. Well, if you guys have minmalistic landers, thats okay too - als long as you guys think they quilify as a "super heavy lander" You can allways try to make it extra sturdy, easy to fly or well equipped with fuel. @Sirine: If that is an entry to the challenge, you are lacking a .craft file.
  7. Yeah, I'm also working on my entry and building a reliable, rigid heavy lander is not a easy as it seems
  8. Be creative - if you think that it counts as a super heavy lander, it probably is a super heavy lander.
  9. Even though you are all busy doing science, I just want to announce, that the 6th BSC-Contest has a (suprised) winner: Didn't even expect to get into the finals with my design - let alone to become the winner. Thank you guys Congratulations to Ampster and Hejnfelt for second and third places - your designs are awesome And of course thanks to everybody who has taken part I will probably take a one weak break from doing BSC-contests, so that I too, can do some science. See you at the next BSC Primary elections are done! Time for the final vote! You can vote over here! Please drop a few line who you've voted for! Final elections will run for another 48 hours. Get the finalists .craft files in a singe .zip >>HERE<< Also check the orignal posts for more pictures and stats on the finalists AmpsterMan - Duna Lander X Hejnfelt - 7X lander MiniMatt - Gonzalez Light Heavyweight mpink - Pinks Heavy Lander MK4 Sirine - UFO Xeldrak - CRUEL Primary elections have started! Vote here! Please drop a few line who you've voted for! Get all .craft files in a single zip file HERE Primary elections will run for 48 hours - the six (or so) best entries will enter the final 24h-election! Please check the challenge guidelines - even if you just want to vote! And remember to come back in two days! As you all should know by now, the stock crafts in KSP are horrible for the most part. So I challenge you to come up with a replacement craft. Well, as I've promissed - it's time for BSC again. After two BSC competitions in the SPH it's time to return to the VAB! Last time Giggleplex won once again with his C7-B, wich makes him the first BSC Double-champion. We are on are 4 days building, 4 days voting schedule. Please note that due to reasons, I might not allways be online when a deadline runs out and you might have to wait for several hours. Please check the challenge guidelines - even if you just want to vote! This is where I've outsourced all the rules. How is this going to work? You will have 96 hours to build you craft and post your entry here with at least one screenshot and its .craft file. Also be so kind to drop us a few lines, about your craft. What are your thoughts on the design? Why is it a good stock craft? Once submissions are closed, I will post a poll where you can vote for your favourites. Depending on the number on entries, we will probably first hold a two day primary election, followed by a two day final one. Anyways, I would like to encourage you to write a few lines why you voted you that craft, it keeps the thread fresh and we all have something to read while we wait for the votes. What are we doing this time? As you allready know, we are doing the Super-Heavy Lander. Well, this abomination has some problems. It hat TONS of RCS fuel, but the RCS-placement is all over the place. The placement of the engines is a good way to waste fuel and a huge part of the lander consists of a Rockomax Brand Adapter that does not serve any purpose. It lacks parachutes, so it can't take advantage of an atmosphere. So, what are you supposed to build? Well, I'm not really sure - the Super-Heavy lander is really a terrible design. But here is a small list you could aim for. Your Super-Heavy Lander... could carry three Kerbals could land on and return from Duna or Laythe or Tylo or Eve? could return to Kerbin without docking to another ship If you want to test your lander, or someone elses - try HyperEdit. It's a small plugin that lets you teleport your lander into an orbit of your choosing. Also, you won't change anything else in your game - you can completely ignore it. You can get it here. Now, it's rather hard to find pictures for someting that was never built. I can give you pictures of the Red Dragon, the Altair Lander and a 1963 artist conception of a Mars Excursion Module (MEM). Contenders Accelerando - Mulefly One Actzoltan - T-Class Heavy Lander AmpsterMan - Duna Lander X Blaster - ROFL briansun1 - CB XV-6V DaveofDefeat - ultra heavy colony class lander frizzank - super-heavy-lander Genius Evil - MENDELEV 3 GusTurbo - The Heavy Haze-Zero - Pilgrim Mk1 Hejnfelt - 7X lander I_Killed_Jeb - Aeneas II mcirish3 - Sagiitta V2 MiniMatt - Gonzalez Light Heavyweight mpink - Pinks Heavy Lander MK4 pedorsf - SHLNA Pulsar - Theseus HAU Rhomphaia - Heavy Multi-role Lander Sirine - UFO SirJodelstein - Great Heavy Lander Smoke - Large Planet Explorer Supernovy - Crew Transport Lander Teirusu - IPL One Xeldrak - CRUEL
  10. Hm, seems like quite a lot of people read Ender's Game - I should probably put it on my to read list. The next books I'll read (Because I allready bought them): Michael Chabon - The Yiddish Policemen's Union Arthur C. Clarke - The Fountains of Paradise Right now I can really recommend The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, American Gods, Rendezvous with Rama and The windup girl.
  11. Isn't it obvious? Give the keys to my trustworthy friend (after all, he's trustworthy), so that he can get the pregnant woman to the hospital. Then take the bus together with the girl of my dreams. -Pregnant Woman gets into the hospital fast -Friend won't be able to hit on the girl -I've got time with the girl alone.
  12. Well, we have a thread about music - why not about books aswell? Since I spent about two hours a day commuting in trains, I picked up the habit of reading. I wasn't a big reader for most of my youth. I got spoiled by books we had to read for school and needed quite some time to find joy in it again. And when I'm on holliday, I don't get any reading done - I need my trains. I tried reading before sleeping, in bed, but I just cant find a position that is comfortable and doesn't give me neck-pain within ten minutes. Usually I try to read classics - well, classics of diffrent genres. Big fan of SciFi from die sixties or seventies, but I tried to broaden my intake in the last year. So, to the best of my recollection, a list of what I've read in the last year (give or take) in order of reading: Christopher Hitchens - Hitch-22: A Memoir Christopher Hitchens - God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything (birthday present) Paolo Bacigalupi - The windup girl (read this one in german) Robert A. Heinlein - Starship Troopers Arthur C. Clarke - Rendezvous with Rama Robert A. Heinlein - The Moon is a Harsh Mistress Isaac Asimov - The Gods Themselves George R.R. Martin - A Game of Thrones George R.R. Martin - A Clash of Kings George R.R. Martin - A Storm of Swords George R.R. Martin - A Feast for Crows George R.R. Martin - A Dance with Dragons Franz Kafka - Das Urteil & In der Strafkolonie ("The Judgement" and "In the Penal Colony") John le Carré - The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (blew my mind) And right now I'm reading Neil Gaiman - American Gods. Which is extremely bizarre but awesome. If I can, I try reading it in the original language (usually English, exept for Kafka) - because I don't think any book ever improved by beeing translated. So, what about you guys? You read a lot? What books do you read? Favourite genre? Favourite books? Do you also need your trains to read? Also, I've become a great fan of goodreads.com - It's a nice way to organize your books, keep track of what you are reading and what else you could read. You can find me as Xeldrak - feel free to add me
  13. Cause I'm running an old version of HyperEdit Nowadays it seems to be Alt+h...
  14. I'm assuming that Ampster is assuming that everybody can download hyperedit. I don't see a problem with that since hyperedit doesn't change anything in the game. If you don't press F11, you wouldn't even know if it's installed.
  15. Actually, we allready have a lander for Mün-type of bodies - should be do the heavy lander, I would prefer a lander, that can land on Duna or Kerbin and get to Orbit again. Actally Duna is a very nice scenario, because you can land completely on retro rockets, completely on parachutes or any combination.
  16. Ah, nice to see, that there are still people doing this challenge Still, you should try: [*Imgur]wwTQj[/imgur] Without the *
  17. Yeah, the next one come around at the end of this week probably around Thursday or Friday. Stupid University....
  18. We have a winner! 1st place:Giggleplex777 - C-7B 2nd place:zekes - FRAK-1 3rd place:sploden - Ravenspear Mk1 improved 07 As soon as I'm at home you guys will get a nice collage
  19. Well, they share the title - just brobel and Mulbin shared the second place last time.
  20. @Sirine: Let me check my personal schedule. No. As I'm writing this we have ~2.75 hours left until we have a new winner!
  21. Seems like antbin got the idea behind the challenge In the meantime: You have ~10h left for your final vote!
  22. Well, I did come up with a fun and actually very flyable podrace - but I can't keep it under 70 meters
  23. I see - I just wasn't sure, cause according to KSP wiki toroidal tanks are "tiny" aka. 0.5 m diameter
  24. hm....what exectly is "probe- sized parts"? Do you mean 0.5 m diameter parts? Because in this case jet engines would not only be op, but also outruled Also, what about toroidal fuel tanks? Also, does supersonic upon reentry count aswell?
