One I get better at designing and flying planes, I might come back to this. Question: will modded craft be allowed (ex: B9, firespitter, Pwing, etc)?

3132: The Kerbals reattempt the earlier experiment, this time using more thermonuclear weapons. They also pile dirt, garbage, and rocks on top of them (several thousand tons), and again detonate the weapons in a volcano. The debris piled on top of the weapons, combined with the ash and gas kicked up by several erupting volcanoes, creates a greenhouse affect that will increase the temperature enough to melt 70% of the ice, and keep it that way until Kerbol spools up to previous levels of activity. Farms and cities begin to be rebuilt. Kerbals begin to leave their underground cities.

The obvious answer: KSP! If I become a teacher, I'd love to go to a school and ask them If I could teach an elective similar to this that uses KSP.

The First SLS Launch- To Man, Or Not To Man?
Wahgineer replied to NASAFanboy's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The first Saturn V launch was unmanned, for the purpose of safety. Since we'll now be dealing with a similarly sized, similarly powerful vehicle, which we haven't done for a little less than 50 years, it is best to send it up empty. Bedsides. I think saying that NASA is launching a 200+ foot tall rocket is going to attract quite a bit of attention. -
Personally, I think that Scimitars are the way to go. While LH2 does require a high volume and is volatile, it is very easy to produce and can be bought in bulk cheaply (correct me if I'm wrong). The whole complexity thing isn't a problem, either: we make jet engines that are just as if not slightly more complex than a Scimitar. And that's not counting rocket engines. Also, Scimitars have the advantage of being operational at any speed, where as scramjets are dead weight for a good part of the flight (takeoff, acceleration, deceleration, landing).

2495: despite the Ice age, the expeditions for the strange anomalies continue. A satellite picks up a source of radiation under a glacier. the team heads out to dig it up. They find a stainless-steel, four wheeled vehicle similar to an automobile, with strange modifications, including a small reactor on the back and large vents. The Vehicle, dubbed anomaly "#088" is brought to deep storage for later examination. 2500: A plan is hatched to stop the deep freeze. Fusion weapons are developed and lugged to an active geothermal hot spring, sitting at the top of a mountain. The 20 Gigaton payload is detonated, blasting a massive crater into the ground that stretches hundreds of miles across. The heat created by the blast combined with the potentially volatile volcano causes other volcanoes to erupt and heat up the planet. The ice begins receding as the temperature rises globally. It will take roughly 15 years for the ice to recede. Kerbals begin moving up out of the ground.

another article about using Thorium, this time in a car.
Wahgineer replied to automcdonough's topic in Science & Spaceflight
You're better of with a nuclear powered Delorean. -
2437: The BKD company states that "The BKDs were never meant for use in a vacuum environment. Also, the name BKD is slightly misleading: it refers to the smaller occurrence of another, much more severe physics anomaly. The BKDs are not sentient. They are machines, which has been known for quite some time." 2438: Research begins on a Kraken drive. Also, an advanced machine is found in the form of a blue telephone booth. The Kerbals attempt to start it up. The machine explodes, ruining the Labratory it was in. Expeditions begin that will work to find more anomalies.

@Piwa (Note: the following is a simplified version of the later half of the space race) U.S.: Hey, lets go to the moon! (starts Gemini to prepare for Apollo) U.S.S.R.; The Americans want to go to the moon! lets build a moon rocket to get their first! (builds N1, fails, destroys launch pad.) U.S.: (lands Apollo 11) we got to the moon first! U.S.S.R. : we wont go that easily (tests N1 four more times. result: failure) forget this piece of garbage! Once the Russians "took the bait", that is, started building their own moon rocket, the goal of the space race became the moon. You can't say that the U.S. set the goal after the race if both they and the Soviets worked toward the same goal during the race. The U.S. won by completing the ultimate goal of that race: the moon. The Soviets lost by not completing the goal and giving up. Saying that the Space Race was actually two separate races is just so that you can make it look like Russia won the Space race but lost the moon race. Since history considers it all as one race, the argument that the U.S. only won the moon race is a failed attempt at saving face.

It happened way before even I (I got the game at 0.18.4) had the game: in version 0.16. that update brought in EVAs and 2.5m parts. All that was in the game then was Kerbin, Minmus, and the Mun; manned ships, no docking, and no maneuver nodes. Actually, as of 0.21, the plane parts are the oldest original items in the game, so it's about time they were updated.

2432: The 2431 thing was just some rumor as to why the BKD hadn't appeared on the market yet. Production is in full swing, with everyone from the common office worker up to the richest businessmen able to afford a flying car. Once partially abandoned and decrypt buildings are restored to their former glory, as they once again welcome the very vehicles that spurred their construction. 2433: Kerbals begin researching temporal displacement.

The only Mk2/Mk3 parts that have been rescaled to fit the new parts are: The mk2 cockpit The mk3 cockpit (partial) the mk1-mk2 adapter Those parts are due for a rescale because, when they were introduced, the current part scaling was 1m, 2m, 3m, etc. Now, since the parts have increased to 1.25, 2.5, 3.75, etc, the airplane parts will increase in size, too.

As far as I know, the only Soyuz mod is made by Bobcat, who is Russian. Maybe the reason that the Soviets/Russians win the space race on the forums is because they're butt hurt over losing the real space race? I mean, the Saturn V was a slap in the face for the Soviets: it was bigger than their rocket, which challenged the whole 'Russia does everything bigger' thing, and it worked FLAWLESSLY, where as the N-1 blew up every time. Also, it is going to be reincarnated as the SLS, which is supposed to be bigger, faster, and stronger.

2430: For reasons unknown, the entire power grid of a large city is knocked out. The location of the disturbance is discovered, and so is its cause: a steam locomotive buried into a transformer. Some notice that the locomotive looks eerily similar to the one owned by Emmet Kerman. It is dismantled, and inside is found a baby kraken drive, modified so as not to emit harmful radiation, spin the vehicle wildly, or anything of that nature. The modifications are duplicated and added onto old BKD blueprints. The new BKD is rigorously tested, and is a resounding success. Production of flying cars resumes. A black box on the train shows that several lightning strikes, collisions, and overloads of the flux kapacitor caused the train to randomly time travel.

Engine rebalancing + vasmir?
Wahgineer replied to z26's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
The VASIMR is technically more powerful than any ion engine. Also, the reason the 48-7s seems to out perform other engines is because it was accidentally made OP (hence why I don't use them and why I disregard vessels that take advantage of their OP-ness.). And while I and others understand your dislike of near future tech, your kind of too late to stop it: the R.A.P.I.E.R. is based off of the SABRE: an in development, near future hybrid engine. -
2092: The trans dimensional hole closes for no apparent reason, pulling Emmet and his time machine back through. Emmet resumes his time traveling. 2092.01: The problem with the baby kraken drives is fixed, and flying cars resume their travels. Economies pick back up, since the banning of the baby kraken drive caused the new infrastructure based off of it to collapse.

What is a Kraken drive?
Wahgineer replied to NERVAfan's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Says the guy who helps with the work on Mechjeb. Since the game isn't multiplayer (yet), it isn't cheating. -
(Emmet wasn't killed. Since he took the secrets of time travel with him, he doesn't have to worry about anyone going after him. He lives a peaceful nomadic life among the space-time continuum) 2062: The baby kraken drive is discovered: it allows for the creation of vehicles that stay aloft via anti-gravity. Cars and airships using these engines go into mass production. It is hypothesized that Emmet Kerman's time train used a baby kraken drive to fly, meaning it must have arrived at some point in the future (or present, in this case).
-
Year 2056: Emmet returns: it turns out that he time traveled, but the temporal displacement of the car destroyed half the town (it wasn't made of stainless steel: it was made of plastic). This time, tough he returns with a flying, time traveling steam locomotive. He disappears, taking the secrets of time travel with him. Some historians later take note of the fact that the events surrounding Emmet kerman are very similar to the plot lines of a movie trilogy created by the pink skinned aliens. 2057: Kerbals begin taking a second look at the fan-rocket thing, thinking that there may be the possibility to develop a hybrid engine for launch vehicles.

What is a Kraken drive?
Wahgineer replied to NERVAfan's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Basically, parts like landing legs push up against plates. The plates get shoved back, but the connection is strong enough that the plates don't snap. The plates push on the legs, trying to go back to normal. The legs keep the plates back. As the parts continue in their shoving match, phantom forces are created that allow the ship to move without using fuel at all. If harnessed correctly, these ships can be used to launch massive payloads to any planet, or cross the solar system in a matter of minutes, all by harnessing the power of the physics bug known as the Kraken. [0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Wahgineer replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
You could also just use a rocket instead. The main reason that many parts packs focus on larger and larger parts are because our payloads are getting larger and larger. The interplanetary vessels of today dwarf the interplanetary vessels of 0.17; and because of this, launch vehicles are following suit. And besides, if you don't like the big shuttle, none of us are forcing you to use it.
